Jeff Passan‏Verified account @JeffPassan

Teams that have shown interest in Josh Donaldson, per sources: Yankees, Astros, Indians, Braves and Phillies. Others could jump in. About 4 1/2 hours until the deadline. Blue Jays would eat significant amount of the $4 million-plus Donaldson is owed.

In the 5th in Washington. Gio remains in the Nats dugout in a Nats uni wearing a sad, reflective expression.

Strange... Francona just said earlier this week they wouldn't give Yandy Diaz regular playing time at 3B, because Jose Ramirez hasn't taken any practice at 2B this year, and Jason Kipnis supposedly made a mechanical adjustment last weekend and has had a hot bat since. I'm not sure Kipnis in the outfield with Brantley and the Melk Man is playable... one of the pitchers might murder someone. It's worth figuring out though as long as they gave up nothing significant.

I'm guessing Shapiro and Atkins' familiarity with Cleveland's system paid off... and I'll take Antonetti and Chernoff's expertise over those two every single time.

Indians acquire Donaldson, per Passan.
Apparently the Red Sox and MFYs are annoyed about how this deal went down:

The issue, according to the report, is the unclear health status of Donaldson, who has not played in the majors since May 28 because of a calf injury. The former American League MVP began a minor league rehab assignment on Aug. 29 and was placed on revocable trade waivers by the Blue Jays that same day. He was traded to Cleveland just before the Aug. 31 deadline, meaning he is eligible to play for the Indians in the postseason.

By rule, a player must be certified as healthy in able to be placed on trade waivers. The Athletic reported that following a dispute with the Blue Jays over his health, Donaldson agreed he was healthy after the MLB Players Association got involved in the process, allowing Toronto to place him on waivers.

Donaldson still has not appeared in a game for the Indians and was placed back on the 10-day disabled list on Sept. 3, starting another minor league rehab assignment.

This unusual sequence, according to The Athletic, irritated multiple other teams, specifically those that may have to contend with Donaldson playing for the Indians in the AL playoffs.

"I guess he got reinjured on the plane," an unnamed executive told The Athletic.

Apparently, the Jays were able to take advantage of a rainout to squeak Donaldson through. He was going to sit out a game because, according to what Donaldson told reporters that day, he was too hurt to play. That game was rained out and he played the next night. If the game had gone on as scheduled and he missed it due to injury, the Jays would have had to pull him off waivers. That's according to Tomase and Bradford.

The same virtuous Yankees who were attempting to acquire Donaldson themselves? I'm sure they must have removed themselves from trade discussions when they realized there could possibly be some moral ambiguity involved.

This is a pointless exercise in paperwork since Donaldson wanted to be traded, the Jays wanted to trade him, and Cleveland would have accommodated whatever process needed to be completed. If necessary, Donaldson could have simply been activated prior to the trade (or made a token appearance in a rehab game), and the Indians would have rehabbed him on the Cleveland roster… their whole September is just a process of getting/keeping players healthy anyway. If they cared about winning games right now, they wouldn't have been using Dan Otero and Jon Edwards as their primary setup men the past few games.
