The Cannucks two best players are pussies. It is that simple. They have trouble with a tough clean game because you can scare away the twins. The rest of the team tries to stand up for them, but any team with talent to go at it with them knows better than to back down. Not saying the Bs are always clean, when you go after a team it crosssses a line.

I expect some other team will bully the Cannucks out of the playoffs before the finals this year.

All this talk about which team is better based on last year should be about goaltending, that was the difference.

It seems like Vigneault/Gillis have already gotten a bit of the Polian treatment - Lapierre isn't getting a misconduct for leaving the bench (even though Luccic was incorrectly tossed for exactly that on the exact same play) because, hey, the Canucks are the victims here. Add me to the group that would be happy to see their bus blow up.

I dunno. By definition, both teams spent the same amount of time 5 on 5. One team scored three goals, the other didn't score any. I've seen people on SoSH disregard data that didn't fit their own personal narrative; guess I can add this to the examples of that sort of "analysis"
Wow, did you even read anything I wrote or are you just purposefully being ignorant?

Weise - "That's not really the type of guy I want to fight I am a gaping vagina with marginal hockey skills."

And when an exhausted Weise found himself out on the ice again late in the frame, a willing Thornton dropped the gloves and Weise didn’t. We’ll let him explain.

“You know what? Me and [Adam] McQuaid were having words and I was under the impression that we might have went and I guess he [Thornton] thought I was challenging him,” recalled Weise. “But at the end of the day, that’s not really the type of guy I want to fight.”

The Horton fight took a lot out of Weise.

“You don’t realize when you’re in it,” he added. “You just keep going. I got in the box and we exchanged a couple of words and I realized how tired I was. And when I got out of there, I still couldn’t catch my breath and that’s why a couple of other guys were challenging me. It was like: ‘Let me catch my breath.’
So 8-10 minutes isn't enough time to catch one's breath? I buy it, but only if kenneycb's mother is saying it.

I also love that he says was willing to go with McQuaid but Thornton's not the type of guy he wants to go with. Fucking really?

And yeah, if the Nucks conditioning program left him so tired that he didn't catch his breath after 8-10 minutes then no wonder they were so gassed by the end of the playoffs last year.

So, he was too tired for Thornton, but wasn't for McQuaid and would've gone with him? Yeah that makes sense. McQuaid would've murdered him, first of all, and second, Weise is a giant, gaping, weepy vagina.

It's funny Weise would rather fight the biggest psycho on the B's instead of Thornton. I guess he didn't see McQuaid's crazy eyes. Probably because he's too much of a bender to ever get close to Thomas, thus requiring the McQuaid bearhug and stare of death.

McQuaid is easily ten times more frightening than Thornton. He starts smiling when someone tries to punch him in the face. It's unnerving.

Weise is dumb. If I were him, I'd rather fight Thornton than McQuaid. Thornton's a technical fighter. McQuaid loads up and throws haymaker after haymaker trying to break peoples faces. Quaider is the much nastier fighter.

Wiese is dumb in that sense, but it looks like his story holds water. The video shows he was jabbing with McQuaid, Thornton whacks him with the stick to basically say "if you're gonna go, it's gonna have to be with me" and then Weise moves like he's gonna drop with Thornton and thinks the better of it. I don't think either player was trying to trick the other, just a weird circumstance and Weise getting cold feet.

http://bigbadblog.weei.com/?p=33234
Bruins forward Brad Marchand, making his regular appearance on WEEI with Mut and Merloni, revealed Wednesday that Bruins forward Shawn Thornton knew that Vancouver forward Dale Weise was not trying to fight him in the first period of Saturday’s game.

Weise extended a challenge and appeared ready to drop his gloves prior to a face-off in the opening period, but when Thornton dropped his gloves at 14:58 of the period, Weise, who had fourth Nathan Horton earlier in the period, kept them on. Though at first glance it appeared Weise was using a cheap tactic to sucker Thornton into a penalty, Marchand said Wednesday that the challenge was indeed being extended to Adam McQuaid, and that Thornton jumped in to “surprise” Weise.

“I’m going to clear it up for everyone who’s listening,” Marchand said. “It was actually a really sneaky play by Thorty. Weise was trying to fight McQuaid, who was standing behind Thornton on the point. McQuaid was going to fight him. So, Weise was yelling and saying, ‘Yeah, let’s go, let’s go.’

“Thorty just figured that at that point he’d drop his gloves and surprise Weise. And the ref just kind of heard Weise yelling ‘Let’s go’ and thought he was talking to Thorty and conning him into a penalty. Thorty kind of surprised him when Thorty dropped his gloves. Weise had no idea Thorty was going to do that.”

Added Marchand: “Him and Quaider know each other a bit from the minors and I think junior as well. They might have went at [it] there.”

Marchand’s words corroborate Weise’s story, as he told reporters prior to Monday’s game that he was trying to fight McQuaid.

Thornton expressed confusion by the play following the game, though he did suggest that Weise could have possibly been looking to fight McQuaid. Both players were given unsportsmanlike conduct minors for the ordeal.

“Oh, he said ‘let’s go’,” Thornton said after the game. “I don’t know if he was talking to me or someone else but [referee Dan O'Rourke] heard him and [referee Don] VanMassenhoven heard him and that’s why he went with me I’m assuming. I mean, you’ll have to ask him. But Donny said, “wait until the puck drops” and I said “of course”. I heard him say ‘we’ll go’, maybe he was talking to McQuaid or I have no idea. But, I thought it was, obviously thought it was go time.”

Eh, both guys deserve some blame here. Thornton surprising someone seems way out of character for him, but he was pretty steamed after the 6 on 1. Plus he was jawing with Weise while they were in the penalty box after the initial scrum. So I don't think Weise could be taken too much by surprise there.

Yeah, I read it. Did you try looking for more data, or is opinion + snark sufficient?

Let's try expanding the sample by looking at last year's Finals. Over the seven games, the Bs scored 14 goals even strength, the Canucks scored 6. Add the game last Saturday to the list - "last 8 games between the two teams," which may be a small sample, but is what we have to compare the current squads head-to-head - and we get 17 for the Bs, 6 for the Canucks.

Vancouver is clearly one of the better teams in the league, but your statement that 5 on 5, they "match up very well with what the Bruins are trying to do," followed by "It really didn't surprise me that they lost this game, it was a 50/50 toss up going into it" doesn't square with what's happened between them and the Bs

For all I know you guys are missing each others' points intentionally; if so forgive me for stepping between a spirited pissing contest. But I think FLAW's point is, that if in the process of outscoring another team 5-on-5 you take twice as many penalties as they do, and give up a bunch of chances/goals while killing penalties, it's sort of pointless to crow about being the better club 5-on-5. At least that's how I was reading him, anyway. Now if you outscore them even strength, and the penalties are pretty even, but your PP sucks and theirs is lethal, then you can point out how you're better 5-on-5 and say you got beat on special teams.

McQuaid is a psychopath, but Thornton is scarier. McQuaid has balance issues because of his height and a weaker fighter could at least go for the pull down wrestling match to end things. Thornton is a fucking professional with almost no weaknesses and a lesser fighter would get hit hard and often by him.

You make a good argument for the 5/5 point, but you cannot dismiss the assertion that it was a 50/50 toss up going into it when over the past 8 games that you cite as your sample, the two teams have gone 4-4 versus one another.

You cannot say the B's are the far superior team and use their 5 on 5 domination and depth as evidence and ignore that Vancouver must be making up ground in special teams and other areas. Clearly to me the two teams are evenly matched, with a slight edge to Boston imo.

It's not about Vancouver scoring 5-on-5, it's about Vancouver being able to keep the game competetive while 5-on-5 to give their special teams an opportunity. The Bruins will beat any team 5-on-5 at this point, that's ther M.O., but teams that are able to counter with a good 5-on-5 gameplan and a strong special teams will give the Bruins some trouble.
I really don't know what else to say - either you're purposfully missing my point or your reading comprehension sucks, I"m not sure which at this point.

This is where you started though.

Vancouver is one of the elite 5-on-5 teams in the league

I get your point but I actually think you are just wrong to even talk about last Saturday's game in that kind of context. Vancouver did one thing right 5 on 5. They drew penalties. You may be right in the aggregate but Saturday's game had zip zero nada zilch to offer any evidence of them being an elite 5 on 5 team.

Just to make the point, there was only 32 minutes of even ice time in that game. The Bruins outscored them 3-0. Their special teams played really well, like really well. The Bruins were 0-7 in 12 minutes of power play time. Vancouver was 3-10 in 12 minutes of 5-4 and of course 1-1 in their 1:47 of 5 on 3. The problem with this game was not that the Canucks skated well with the Bruins 5v5 (or 4v4). The problem was that there was only 32 minutes of that time.

Fair enough re: Saturday's game. I was trying to put in into the context of the overall matchup and wasn't pinpointing any one game in particular. I said I wasn't surprised that they lost Saturday because Vancouver matched up well against the Bruins and made the additional point that they are one of the better 5-on-5 teams in the league, I wasn't trying to use Saturday's game as the barometer.

Was probably my mistake, but either way I think the over emphasis on Saturday's game was missing my point completely because after that post I didn't mention Saturday's game once, other people did.

When even the Canadiens disagree with your opinions about the Bruins, you know you must be off base.

Canadiens defenseman and vocal leader Josh Gorges looked shocked when asked if he considered the Bruins a dirty team.

“I don’t think [the Bruins] are a team where you saw coming in 'I’ve got to have my head up here because they’re going to do something dirty,' " said Gorges. “It’s a physical team. They play hard. They hit. Do they cross a line? I don’t know. I think they play physical. Hockey is a physical game. Do they get suspensions? Of course they have, but you could say the same thing about 29 other teams in the league.”

Take Marchand's “speed bag" incident from last year’s Finals, when he repeatedly punched Vancouver's Daniel Sedin. Marchand was given penalties for the string of undefended punches to the Canucks superstar, but that isn’t something Gorges finds “dirty” in his book of hockey.

“If you get a punch in the face after a whistle I don’t think that’s being dirty. That’s part of hockey. He’s going to get a penalty and maybe you throw one back and get a penalty too. I don’t think that’s dirty hockey. I think it’s part of the aggression of playing hockey and that’s what makes our sport great -- the physicality part of it. I love that part of the game.”
Surely Bruins Public Enemy No. 1 P.K. Subban would be licking at his chops to throw both Marchand and the rest of the Bruins under the bus after the run-ins they’ve had over the last two years.

Right . . . right?

...

“[The Bruins] are in your face. You know what I mean? They’ve had a lot of success over the years. They’re Stanley Cup champions. They’re playing some good hockey this year. Whatever they’re doing, they’re doing something right. Whenever you play them you know they’ll get in your face, they’ll finish their checks and they’re gonna work hard. For our team coming into this building it’s going to be the work ethic that’s going to let us have success here, and nothing else.”

Remember these quotes?

Salo was so angry at the hit, which was assessed a major clipping penalty and game misconduct, that with his good arm he heaved his stick into the air before skating off.
Canuck general manager Mike Gillis was almost too angry to speak.
“You talk about unacceptable plays in hockey,” Gillis fumed. “That's clearly one. I'm not going to comment any further.”

...

“It's very, very cheap,” Canuck defenceman Kevin Bieksa said. “I can't think of a cheaper hit you can do on the ice. That and a slew-foot kind of go hand in hand. Twenty seconds before that, [Marchand] and Sami have a pretty good collision in the exact same spot. Sami probably gets the better of him. Then second time, Marchand comes back and loses his will and goes down low. A cheap shot from him, and I hope he gets a phone call from the league.”
They're much more amusing after watching this.

Kesler won't get a call from Shanny. He'll use Marchand/Emelin as his basis. Of course, I doubt Shanny hops on twitter to tell everyone how "we don't like it" just like he did after the Marchand one.

Chiarelli should fire off an email to Gillis this morning with the video. No words, just the subject line "Totally unacceptable?"

One amusing thing about the Canucks is they recently stopped celebrating goals because they're waiting to celebrate the big one at the end of the year. The 5 guys on the ice celebrate, but they scrapped the high five line through the bench that every other team does. It's cute.
