My buddy Nick runs that company. BLPA DEX tournaments, yea?
I really want to do one of their international ones, someday.

Yeah he’s here, I met him last night at the bar. A few guys from my men’s league do 2-3 a year with BLPA. I’m pretty hungover for our games today but it’s been a blast. They are doing Czech Republic this year I think there are spots still. My buddy Nick runs that company. BLPA DEX tournaments, yea?

Tragic hockey story. A kid who came up thru the same youth program my kids play in died after an injury sustained in a high school hockey game this afternoon.
My teams best player is a Bills fan, and missed the Championship game for a Bills playoff game.Would you skip a beer league playoff game because you have tickets to an NHL game?
JFC!
OK, so I'm in central NY, roughly on a dividing line between Sabres and Rangers fans. On 3/11 the NYR play in Buffalo. Two of the best players on my team have tickets for this damn game which, of course, is the same time as the first round of our beer league playoffs.
It is going to bury us to lose them and, finally this year, we have wrapped up no worse than a tie for first place already, with 3 weeks left in the regular season. By a huge margin this is our strongest team, playing the best hockey we've played in the seven years I've been on the team, all to get screwed by an infatuation for Tage Thompson and Artemi Panarin!
But even going into the playoffs as the 1 seed, the 8 seed will be strong enough to give us trouble if these two players are out. Why couldn't it be the benders who got the tickets?
And in both cases it is, as I understand it, their families that doomed us: one guy got the tickets for Christmas, the other guy for his birthday.
wiffleballhero is not a happy boy.
TSC - are you in a house league or Hockey North America? Why?
I play down here in NoVa. Full time on a UC team, and sub on a B team. Age and injuries have really slowed me down the last 4ish years.
I recently started playing goalie, as well - cause why the hell now. I’m a not good LC goalie but decent in D league.
House. I play out of PWICE.TSC - are you in a house league or Hockey North America?
Hockey North America used to play in Reston, but that was many years ago. Now, just at Cabin John, Wheaton and Rockville. It is a pretty good organization with about 50 teams across 3 divisions (and several sub-divisions).House. I play out of PWICE.
I’ll get up to the St James or Reston occasionally though.
I liked HNA. It seemed decently run and they kept good stats! Looks like they are still around?Hockey North America used to play in Reston, but that was many years ago. They are still going strong. I played and officiated for many years - it all came to a grinding halt after breaking my leg 2x in 12 months.I liked HNA. It seemed decently run and they kept good stats! Looks like they are still around?
edit: Wow they have all the historical stuff up. Should show my kids this. Their dad used to tear up high C/low B!

Damn, 2x in 12 months? That's rough. My buddy broke his ankle in an HNA game, came back 8 months later and broke the other one :-(They are still going strong. I played and officiated for many years - it all came to a grinding halt after breaking my leg 2x in 12 months.
You are a good player!
chippy-and-way-too-rough-for-beerleague
The only knock on the league I have, I guess, is that the refs we get are often obviously focused on keeping the clock moving and so games are really chippy. Last year I also played as a regular sub in a USAHockey league in Ithaca with my brother and that league played running time and was far less violent.
In a twist I didn't see coming in this story, I got myself a one game suspension this week, applied in the first round of the playoffs.Would you skip a beer league playoff game
I assumed as much if you went Shins first.Tongue out for me. I also don't wear feet socks in my skates.
You must have a beautiful nose. But my wife said she would kill me if my nose got fucked up again.
I may have told this story here before, but a guy on a team I used to play for up in MA lost an eye playing beer league. The people I see play in less than a cage are nuts imo. I've seen some fantastic hockey players take stitches or lose teeth from completely incidental shit like a puck running up their stick. Never mind the random joes. I got to go to work in the morning, I dont to need to get a multiple thousand dollar medical bill and spend a night in the er getting stitched up due an errant stick.
Guy on my team lost half a tooth in a game. Total cost $4000. Teeth are ridiculously expensive. Well worth the investment in a cage. The people I see play in less than a cage are nuts imo. Lots of great quotes..."Bob Carolan, 82, a retired pulmonologist from Eugene, Ore., recalled an incident about 15 years ago in which he resuscitated a player on the ice who was having a heart attack. “The best play I ever made at Snoopy,” said Carolan, who ran into the same man at a tournament 10 years later. “He had an implantable defibrillator, but he was still playing.” "
"“We all have to get up at 5:30 to pee anyway, so we might as well play some hockey,” said Craig Kocian, 78, of Arvada, Colo., as they dressed for the game."
"After their early morning game, the Fading Stars came off the ice and stripped away their gear. Out came a case of Coors Light. It was 7:40 a.m. Noticing the beer company’s logo on the team’s sweaters, a visitor asked if it was a sponsor.
“The only sponsorship we’re looking for is Viagra,” said Murray Platt, 68, of Denver."
I'm not familiar with them, but most of my gear is customized and also on the higher end(Passau and Bauer). Obviously financial situation matters, but if all your other gear is up to snuff and you want to rock that aesthetic I'm all for going high end. For me my blocker and glove were my last upgrades, it was nice having a high end blocker, but I just couldn't quit my old ass glove. It depends on the level of play, but if you're happy with your glove now I wouldn't mess with a new oneAny goalies out there try the Kenesky custom gear? They have awesome retro and vintage gear & I’m looking to replace my Boddam waffle style blocker (and maybe eventually get a trapper & pads). Prices are in CAD too!

This is wild to me. My comp teams would be annoyed when we had to have 11 players on a team, because they'd all show up every game and be mad they had to rotate an extra through. Also, it's not like signing up is cheap, there is significant investment in equipment and money. Plus we're all nuts and usually want to play as much as possible. I almost never said no to a second(or third) game when one of the goalies from the game after me didn't show and I was asked to play.Looking for some advice.
My league has recently been having pretty signficant issues with teams not having enough skaters on game nights and having to forfeit.
We've won via forfeit 3 times in our last 8 games. Our summer season is 12 games total. Guys are paying $300~ each to play for the summer.
Right now if a team forfeits, they get a L for the game, but..that's it. The non forfeiting team can still have the ice time, but the refs and score keeper are cancelled.
I want to propose some kind of deterrent/punishment for teams who forfeit. The L doesn't matter because in our leauge...every team makes the playoffs.
I want to suggest something like - when a team forfeits, the forfeiting team Captain is suspended for the next game - or something like that to incentivize team Captains to actually do their job and make sure they have a roster with enough skaters that forfeiting is an actual emergency, not just an option. My team rarely has less than 10 skaters on any given game because I actively recruit reliable fulltime skaters, and subs who want the opoortunity to play.
Anyone dealt with some thing like this, have some suggestions I can bring up at the next Captains meeting?
Does your league have a "roster lock" or something like that? Mine does but relatively late in the season (to protect against ringers in the playoffs). As such, when the rosters are not locked, we usually just post on the league facebook page that we are looking for players to skate and rarely have forfeits this way. And same with your league, L's don't really matter....mainly this is to avoid the same scenario you mention (Pay big bucks and then not actually play).Looking for some advice.

Our league has to pay for the ice, so the team that cancels late (as in, we can't notify in time to not get charged for the ice, which is 48 hours), essentially covers the whole cost and the team that was cancelled upon gets a credit for next season, so it will reduce their league fees a bit.Looking for some advice.
