Pete Abraham @PeteAbe ·Maybe the swelling hasn't gone down enough?
Since neither farrell nor abraham are doctors, what else could it be other than wishful?Pete Abraham @PeteAbe ·
Benintendi does not have much swelling. Farrell said they're hoping his season is not over. But that seems more wishful than anything

The whole "too swollen for an MRI" thing is basically bullshit. You're never actually too swollen for an MRI. I don't really know what to make of the "MRI is inconclusive" thing. Maybe they want the team docs to examine him to correlate the images with his physical exam.Maybe the swelling hasn't gone down enough?

Rewatched the Benintendi injury - his knee bends out, which would injure the LCL, not MCL. Such an awkward injury, though, could be ACL too
Do we know he had an MRI today? I know reports are that an MRI would be needed, but all I've seen today is that "tests" were inconclusive. No specifics on what those tests were or if they even included an MRI.The whole "too swollen for an MRI" thing is basically bullshit. You're never actually too swollen for an MRI. He had an MRI, yes. I think the "additional tests" are the physical exam that the team docs will be giving him.Do we know he had an MRI today? Maybe the "more tests tomorrow" include the MRI, at home, with the team's medical staff rather than whomever would be doing the evaluation in St Pete.
I saw reports that he had an MRI. And DRS is right, the "too swollen" thing is nonsense. If anything, sometimes its harder to interpret a month or two after the swelling has gone down and some of the lower grade injuries have scarred and the bone contusions are resolving or have resolved.Do we know he had an MRI today? They could probably diagnose that for you too. You might even get a discount since they're only orthopedists. You doctor types are making my head hurt. I feel sad.

This guy is definitely one of the top two.I saw reports that he had an MRI. And DRS is right, the "too swollen" thing is nonsense. If anything, sometimes its harder to interpret a month or two after the swelling has gone down and some of the lower grade injuries have scarred and the bone contusions are resolving or have resolved.
I'll stick with the partial ACL tear idea as my guess. More often than not ACL tears are complete or near complete and there isn't much ambiguity. But sometimes they can be tricky to interpret and somewhat subjective (hence maybe the inconclusive result). It was a bit of a funky injury mechanism and Benintendi had that ankle roll to go along with it, so I wouldn't be surprised if his ACL is injured but not definitely completely torn. In these cases, the radiology impression may be something along the lines of "moderate grade partial ACL tear", which basically is punting back to ortho. If the clinical exam is stable, it might heal with some rest and they might re-image in a couple months to see how it looks. If the clinical exam feels unstable, they will probably reconstruct.
I suppose he could also have a posterolateral corner injury that is typically much worse than a simple LCL injury but can be hard to interpret and somewhat subjective as well.
More than the number who have injured their shoulder I'm guessing. How many major leaguers in history have torn an ACL running the bases? Has to be a tiny number right?
No offense, but what the hell does that have to do with him now having an injury?Michelle Berthiaume @MonitorMichelle 1h1 hour ago
Via a little research, Andrew Benintendi last missed consecutive games as a pro in July 2015 w/ Lowell, 7 days after he turned pro #RedSox

Alejandro Machado came in as the pinch-runner and got credit for the run. The home run was hit by Tony Graffanino, who I barely remember being a member of the Red SoxI remember that play. It was in Toronto. Gabe could not run the bases and had to be replaced by a pinch runner. Quick question did Gabe actually get credit for scoring or was it the pinch runner?
I'll never forget Tony G botching a double play ball vs Pale Hose in the 05 ALDS that could've stopped the bleeding in game 2 to split at US Cellular Guaranteed Drop Rate FieldAlejandro Machado came in as the pinch-runner and got credit for the run. No structural damage for Benintendi.

Farrell said optimistic he'll be back this season.
Isn't it a minor miracle that he didn't have a full tear of any ligament?Awesome news.
I'd probably consider a sprain "structural damage", but that's just semantics mostly. Sounds like nothing high grade or surgical so whatever looked funny about the MRI probably was very minor and/or didn't match with any clinical instability.
Minor miracle augmented by relative youth and low mileage even compared to other players in MLBIsn't it a minor miracle that he didn't have a full tear of any ligament?
Interesting. I'm suddenly realizing I have no idea what a sprain actually is. Internet definitions make it sound like a word that can encompass a pretty broad range of injuries.Awesome news.

Rehab? He'll just sit on the couch and watch cartoons and eat Cap'n Crunch for a week and be ready to go.Does that give Sons of James Andrews the ability to prognosticate a rehab schedule?
Great news! Ahh, to be young again.Guerin Austin @guerinaustin 2m2 minutes ago
