Oh Christ. This really is going to become a thing, isn't it?

I really though the NFL would release a brief statement today saying that Yes, a ball was under inflated - but that was a common occurrence and no foul was committed.

But no, they're going to drag this out and make THIS a prominent storyline over the next two weeks.

The NFL could fuck up a wet dream.

The sad thing is that they're not really fucking it up from a ratings and dollars perspective.  All the networks and media outlets love this shit and the American public is all too happy to lap it up.

Now the question is whether ESPN sends out "investigative journalist" Mike Fish to interview people bitter ex-employees and extend this, or if it just turns into something like the Lester glove goo.

Not trolling and not funny.  Is the NFL just supposed to look the other way when the Patriots continue to bend and, in some cases, blatantly disregard rules?

Thanks to Wilbon. At least we don't have to read any more posts from non-Patriots fans about how we're the only ones who care about this and are just imagining that folks are out to get the Patriots.

I mean, even if the Patriots intentionally did this, isn't it basically like putting pine tar on a baseball? A fine, a 2 pitching game ban, no calls to kick out all the Yankees enshrined in Cooperstown, etc.

Something to consider. Mike Adams intercepted two of the 11 Brady gave up so far in 2015, and allegedly claims both were under-inflated. And supposedly the Colts brought that to the attention of the refs in the playoff game, as an issue to be looked for. And supposedly one or more were tossed from the game accordingly.

Here's where it gets interesting. The immediate implication is the Pats have been doing this at least since Week 11, possibly earlier. So either they only did it with the Colts, or they used the same trick in some or all of the other eight games, and perhaps as many as 17. Because if it's an effective technique, why restrict it's use only to a single team? And in all those other games, how many times do you think referees - whose job it is to know when a ball is inflated properly or not - handled Patriots-supplied balls? Even in the most limited scenario, it has to be multiples of 100's, correct? And to all appearances, they didn't notice anything until they were told specifically to look for it.

Does Mike Adams have some sort of preternatural inflation assessment capabilities? Why is he the only guy who could spot this?

Just turn on the TV. The Around the Horn people railed them, Woody Paige said the Pats should lose at least 3 draft picks.

It really is wonderful that the media somewhere over the past few months decided to willfully ignore the Ravens involvement in covering up and rationalizing a horrific case of domestic abuse, but now tars-and-feathers an organization in successive weeks for running a legal series of plays, and for and as-of-yet confirmed case of ball under-inflation.

Priorities.

And of course it's the millionth example of how the sports media is lazy. Take an existing narrative, add a salacious new element, stir, and voila! Let the righteous indignation begin.

One thing I'm getting from talking to team people is that it will be almost impossible to prove the Pats intentionally deflated footballs.

Freeman again.  So this is all pointless.

PS -- Wilbon has become a complete hack.  His opinion is below meaningless.

If the NFL comes down on the pats people will call them "cheaters" if the NFL says nothing happened people will say that the NFL is corrupt/hiding evidence so they can help the pats and that the pats are still cheaters

Option #2 sounds great. If you care what people say that's your own damn problem.

It has been 14 hours since the initial tweet about this.  Amazing how fast the media lapped this up and jumped to the Patriots win should be invalidated, and yet, nobody has produced a lick of evidence for the whole thing.

I mean, how mad are you if are Bob Kraft.  You supported the current leadership though the depths of complete bafoonery and now the league can't squash the rabid dogs from attacking.

Pointless, perhaps, on a factual level. But that's not what this is about. It's another chance for the national media to stand on their soap box and rail against a coach that treats them with disdain.

Whether they did this or not, whether they do things that stride the fence of legitimacy, doesn't really matter anymore. This is about perception feeding the beast. Everything else is too difficult to think about

This is turning into Spygate now. Wilbon says put the Colts in the Superbowl.
So the lighter balls helped Blount steamroll the Colts? I'm confused. Could have sworn Brady only threw for like 200 yards and Blount ran for 148 and 3 touchdowns. Must have been the wrong game.

Banner year for the NFL. First fucking up the Ray Rice thing to the point that it's obvious no one in the league cares about domestic violence and now the Super Bowl coverage is going to be a total freak show. This league is really too stupid to survive for long.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
It's so ridiculous at this point, I'm surprised no one has posted out-of-focus screen caps of Pats players or coaches with unexplained tape on their fingertips, and in that tape is something that might or might not be reflecting light which may or may not be a thumbtack or other sharp implement.

Buchholz and the Bullfrog sunscreen, anyone.......?

EDIT:  just thinking out loud here and building on the Bill Nye post:  if instead of filling the balls with air of ambient temperature, what if you filled the balls with very hot air right before weigh in, which once allowed to cool, would deflate the ball naturally.  What's the diff in weight between the ambient air and the heated air?

Yeah, this league probably deserves a terrible organization full of horrible people like the Ravens representing them.  Ravens are great in game as long as you aren't a female fan, then you might get raped by the head of security.  Too bad Joe Flacco is a playoff choke artist so the league wont get the hero they deserve.

Nah, this year the Seahawks served their "sentence" and had fewer practices.  Last year though...who knows how many extra full contact practices they held.  Bet they did it during Super Bowl week even.

For a bunch of reasons, it is less fun than it used to be.
In fairness, we are not being singled out. The Browns are being investigated as detailed in another thread.
Bright side -- every us v them narrative is helpful. Channeled anger

So much of the sports media has turned into little more than yellow journalism.  These guys use the ephemeral nature of Twitter to avoid having to fact-check anything and ESPN knows that they can drive the narrative to suit their needs.

What makes anyone think any of this is bad for the league? What makes anyone think they want to squash it? I keep hearing about all these things that are going to take the league down. How many games did you not watch because Ray Rice punched his fiance on video? How many of you stopped buying Pepsi?

Ref controversies, blown call, what is a catch -- the whole thing. Except for concussions and game fixing, I am now firmly of the belief that deep in the bowels, the league cultivates it all, or at a minimum doesn't mind it a bit.

I'm becoming convinced this is great for the league. All of it. People love this shit. They eat it up and click and click and click.

It's clear from the number of comments that many of us can't pull our eyes away from this story.  I think the NFL is not so concerned about whether this messes with the storylines.  Rather, it's a new storyline.  They want it to be controversial.  People who would have been bored by the usual fare the week before the week before the SB are paying attention - did the Patriots CHEAT? AGAIN? What will happen to them?

Yes I remember reading all the stories about the Browns using cell phones on the front page of ESPN and hearing about it on PTI and calls for the team to lose multiple draft picks and lots of "sources say" comments from elsewhere in the league.  Good comparison.
