You're right. I made an inference that I shouldn't have because the Steelers headsets being off didn't mean Pats were off simultaneously.gammoseditor said:How does it contradict what BB said? I don't think Bill made any comments about the Steelers headsets. He spoke to his own issues. I don't see why we should assume they would be identical.

Dude steps out of bounds wide open in the endzone, Haley calls a WR pass after they were moving the ball at will, the 3rd and goal draw after the false start. I mean, Pittsburgh couldn't get out of their own way when it came to scoring opportunities, but somehow we have to listen to these petty insinuations a week after the game? That's what the NFL gets for fostering a crybaby culture where everything can be construed as cheating.

And that headset issues only happened when they had ball. Which contradicts what BB said.
I've never really sat and thought about the meaning of "mouth-breather," a word that has vaguely troubled me over the years for lack of comprehension. I'm kind of on the fence on this one. It's especially difficult without hearing the tone of the conversation. I mean, he's on a radio show answering questions. Is he supposed to say "no comment"? Until Belichick's "look ahead" philosophy, this is how all NFL players and coaches behaved. Hell, even Brady answers questions about the past game during his radio appearances, to a degree. As it relates to last Thursdays game, Roethlisberger said the headset issue only occurred when the Steelers had the ball.
In a lot of games, the offensive coordinator to quarterback headset, therell be whether its one play, its static, something itll go out, Roethlisberger said. It doesnt matter if its at home, on the road, it just never fails. Theres almost always some kind of communication [problem]. But its real brief. It never lasts very long. I think the difference this time and this is, like I said, there was no communication issues really between Coach [Todd] Haley and myself but what I was told and what Bruce [Gradkowski] told me when he listened is that when we had the ball on offense, our coach-to-coach communication, so the guys up in the box to the guys on the sideline, were not only hearing themselves but they were hearing the radio broadcast of the game. And from what I was told from Coach Haley it was only when we had the ball. When the Patriots had the ball there was no radio broadcast.
Love this post and it's insane that the more seasoned sportswriters can't understand this. I made the same type of response (that rodderick had posted) to my brother in law Steeler fan. His response? "Well, yeah, you guys don't make mistakes because you cheat. It's not that hard to play well when you know all the plays and get to play with unfair equipment." When I told him to listen to his boy Cowher and what he said pre game on Sunday, he just said that Cowher is just trying to play nice on TV and stay within the fraternity of coaches. He said Bettis and Ward and far more likely to tell the truth. I may need to have a serious conversation with my sister.ifmanis5 said:Love this post and it's insane that the more seasoned sportswriters can't understand this. So many of the Pats signature wins came down to the opponent making dumb mistakes, while the Pats players, who are better coached and better prepared, executed better and played smarter when it matters the most. Why is that not the story? I think we know why and that's why this whole #DFG episode actually bothers me. It should be mandatory to watch the Do Your Job show and then you'll see what's up.
They do. Hating on the NEP is like The Force- it's the only thing different fanbases have in common and it binds their galaxies together.CantKeepmedown said:I made the same type of response (that rodderick had posted) to my brother in law Steeler fan. There is seriously no arguing with these idiots. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the rest of the NFL fan bases feel the same way.

Jets, Steelers, Colts, Ravens fans/players/families/coaches/management/owners are elite level sore losers. Do people in Seattle think the Patriots cheated in the Super Bowl? I mean, if there was ever a big play where the defense looked like they knew it was coming it was The Interception.CantKeepmedown said:I made the same type of response (that rodderick had posted) to my brother in law Steeler fan. Which is why I love the fact that it immediately came out that the defense read the play based on studying and Butler had been burned by it even in practice (complete with the video of the practice to back it up). It became a story on just how prepared and well coached the players are.
Related to that (I wasn't sure where to put this) but Rosevelt Colvin's interview on T&R is a must listen. He details how much went in to being prepared for their opponents and all of it being completely legal. There's tons of great nuggets but my favorite is that he used to tape the TV showing Peyton Manning's games so he could pick up on his calls and use them next time they played. Something so simple but effective.

amarshal2 said:If there's one thing I think it's right to be critical of BB for it's that I think his hyper-logical approach to the media and all types of questions he and the team get -- while well reasoned and occasionally noble (always takes high road) -- has some seriously major flaws in practice.
Ultimately, BB has allowed all of his accomplishments and his teams' accomplishments to be questioned by the masses. Further -- and ironically -- he's helped create a bigger distraction than all the ones he was aiming to avoid all along.
There's two things that BB does not do when it comes to the media.
1) He does not play the game
2) He does not put forward a relate-able personality
The second one is actually the bigger problem. Rather than BB defining who he is, he has allowed the media to define him. To a large extent BB is a blank slate. People want to know who you are and what makes you tick. People love sincerity. They don't believe you when you say that every team you play, even the terrible ones, are great and a tough challenge -- even if you believe it yourself. Further, he's done nothing to get the media to do him favors. He treats them like a nuisance --which they are -- but letting it be known is a problem. This is a 10 second soundbite world yet just looking at or listening to a clip of BB during a press conference is never helpful. To the extent that he's putting forward any personality at all, he comes across to many on the outside as abrupt, arrogant, or unfriendly.
Belichick has created a world where others can project what they believe onto him and the Patriots (he also severely limits the personality his teams can put forward in the media). When the only thing you show them is abrupt press conferences, seemingly insincere tropes, and a real cheating scandal (however overblown) they're not going to project a pretty picture onto you.
This isn't intended to be a critique about the things BB does wrong. I love that they take the high road and I totally get why he doesn't want to give away things for the competition. This is a critique of is what he has NOT done. It's a critique of his unwillingness to play the game. It's his inability or unwillingness to paint a picture of who he and his team are that takes charge of his own narrative.
Still not convinced? Not everyone great is hated. Many a mediocre coach is beloved for his personality.
-Peyton Manning is largely revered. He's taken control of his narrative and projected an image that people can relate to.
-Doc Rivers isn't 1/10th the coach that BB is but he was largely supported by the local and national media. He played the game. I can't remember where I read it but there's some off the record quote about a member of the Boston media saying that he didn't think Rivers was great but would never go after Rivers because he liked the guy so much and didn't want to have to deal with a less media friendly replacement.
-Even Rex Ryan's approach to the media is 1,000x better than Belichick's. I can't stand the guy but at least half the country feels like they know who he is, thinks he's sincere, and believes they can relate to him.
tl;dr:
BB would probably say that none of this media shit matters to him. I get that -- he has no interesting in playing the game. But by allowing the media to paint the narrative of who he is he has created a world where all of his accomplishments and his teams' accomplishments are questioned and, ironically, he's helped create a bigger distraction than all the ones he was aiming to avoid all along.
He's done a great job keeping the team focused no doubt. But to the extent that his persona magnified deglategate I'm not sure it's credible to argue it was entirely inconsequential. That's why BB worries about distractions to begin with.ElcaballitoMVP said:
Do you really think he's created a distraction for anyone on the Patriots? Just a few days ago we had a story about Lawyer Milloy complaining about his hotel room before the Super Bowl and Bill gave him his own room to make him happy. There are stories that say no matter what distractions are going on in the media or around the team, when you walk in the door it is all about football. Deflategate was running wild before the Super Bowl and the players only had to worry about going to work. Hell, Bill tells the players what the media is going to ask them about and what their answers should be. He gives no bulletin board material for opponents to run with.
Could he play nice with the media to get more pro-Patriots stories out there? Sure. But as you said, none of that shit matters to him. He only cares about winning footballs games and that's just fine by me. I don't see the big distraction that he's causing.

This is not me saying there's a better overall coach out there. There isn't. But his media strategy has backfired.
