Zappe was only a surprise because of the lack of other options on the roster, he's not good at all and doesn't have the physical tools to ever be even a top tier backup.
A lot of it, I believe, was regression. His arm angle got funky and he stopped being able to make legitimate throws. He might come back but doubt it will be more than as a practice squad guy. They sat Mac at one point last year for the guy they just cut. Crazy. So they briefly were more confident in Zappe last year, and now they’re so down on him after a poor camp they’d rather just have one QB?
He’s a totally fine backup and even though he’s tiny his arm isn’t that bad. Backup QBs are so expensive that even an average backup on a rookie deal is a good use of a pickThen he was a terrible 4th round draft pick.
Not really, they got a couple games out of him and a chance they'll bring him back after waivers. A year of backup QB play on the ultra-cheap for a 4th isn't terrible value. It's a late 4th, the expected value on it is exceptionally low, getting even 1 season of value out of a pick like that is just fine. Then he was a terrible 4th round draft pick.

Nonsense. They released him because he was absolutely atrocious this summer and hasn't improved in the slightest. If so, Montgomery is a huge surprise IMO. I thought he was gone.
I wonder if they don’t bring Zappe back and part of releasing him is giving Mac headspace?
He just got released, so they only got 1 year out of him. And they must not have been happy with it if they released him. He’s a totally fine backup and even though he’s tiny his arm isn’t that bad. Backup QBs are so expensive that even an average backup on a rookie deal is a good use of a pick
Absolutely. Still has good upside at a position of need. They’ll get the backup QB settled in pretty short order(and could very well still be Zappe). Is Thornton really more valuable than Zappe?
You still need a QB2 that knows the offense. Brian Hoyer was trash too and he’ll live comfortably for the rest of his life in large part because of checks from Robert Kraft, despite being worthless on the field. He knew the offense though, so they kept him.Nonsense. They released him because he was absolutely atrocious this summer and hasn't improved in the slightest.
He might make it back to the practice squad, but this isn't any sort of surprise.
I suspect he got released because no one is gogoing to pick up such a physically limited qb so the pats can just use his spot to get people on short term IR, maybe mess around with waivers, and then ass him backHe just got released, so they only got 1 year out of him. And they must not have been happy with it if they released him.
I was thinking about Arizona too as soon as I heard he’d be released.I feel like someone will pick Zappe up. Arizona is starting Clayton Tune or Josh Dobbs. Zappe at least looked competent in real live NFL games. I'd be happy to be wrong and I am not anywhere near a Zappe truther, just feels like a really risky cut.
On the other hand, no matter how we may feel about it, at least none of us are the ones who spent $8,000 on a Bailey Zappe football card two weeks ago
Unless it's one of you in which case...why? I need to know.
Cuz they're tanking.I feel like someone will pick Zappe up. Arizona is starting Clayton Tune or Josh Dobbs.
I'm absolutely positive that there will be a backup QB on the roster by the time Game 1 rolls around. You still need a QB2 that knows the offense. Question from the ignorant. Seeing as how he was released, can he just say 'no' to any team that wants him, and wait for the Patriots to complete the wink-and-nod agreement they had to sign him back once they got the IR squared away? Or can he just get selected by another team and its tough shit for him?I suspect he got released because no one is gogoing to pick up such a physically limited qb so the pats can just use his spot to get people on short term IR, maybe mess around with waivers, and then ass him back
Sure, and they have less than two weeks to learn the offense. You saw the offensive line this preseason.I'm absolutely positive that there will be a backup QB on the roster by the time Game 1 rolls around.
Subject to waivers.Question from the ignorant. Or Zappe/Cunningham are back in a few days after the IR moves are made and it's like nothing ever happened.Sure, and they have less than two weeks to learn the offense. You saw the offensive line this preseason.
Is it really smart to gamble on a #2 that won’t know the offense when your o-line is currently trash?
I'm not going to get worked up over Baily Zappe, who is objectively a terrible QB with no accuracy and no physical skills.Sure, and they have less than two weeks to learn the offense. You saw the offensive line this preseason.

Dobbs has experience in the system though. Big difference this time of year when you are looking for a fill-in. Though I agree there is some risk. Patriots obviously see the risk to be worthwhile compared to other players. As others have said McSorley is still a possibility. FWIWI feel like someone will pick Zappe up. In one game. Zappe never got a stert over a healthy Mac.They sat Mac at one point last year for the guy they just cut. Crazy. So they briefly were more confident in Zappe last year, and now they’re so down on him after a poor camp they’d rather just have one QB?
Any team can take him and he has to go there. His agent could theoretically say team my guy has a job in NE so please don’t take zappe off of waivers, and maybe thst would dissuade some from drafting himQuestion from the ignorant. I mean... I think a mobile QB would be more valuable behind a bad offensive line (though that's overblown given how little the likely week 1 starters have played) than the guy with little mobility a subpar arm and a what... 2 month headstart on the offense (less if a guy played in a similar offense already).Sure, and they have less than two weeks to learn the offense. You saw the offensive line this preseason.

The Pats do this kind of shell game on cutdown day every year (I suspect other teams do, too, but I don't follow their transactions as closely). I'd bet the house that both Zappe and Cunningham are back after the dust settles. At a minimum, one of them will be.Likely not. But it’s a bit of an unnecessary gamble, no? I think you gotta keep one.
This is the excuse they used before which led to Brian Hoyer sticking around.Sure, and they have less than two weeks to learn the offense. You saw the offensive line this preseason.

Fair enough, if he’s the backup for multiple seasons it’s a perfect use of a 4th round pick.I suspect he got released because no one is gogoing to pick up such a physically limited qb so the pats can just use his spot to get people on short term IR, maybe mess around with waivers, and then ass him back
Could be, but I kind of doubt it. I suspect one or both of the backups goes to the practice squad and they are activated for games.Colt McCoy is coming next?
Look atthat excelllent throw! Why can't we get players like that?
Was the terrible OL play not a factor, though?Zappe put enough crappy play on film in the preseason to dissuade teams from picking him up. He looked very bad.
The chances that both QB's get claimed via waivers are too remote to worry about. All teams are playing similar roster games, and the claiming team has to immediately find room on their own 53-man roster for the claimed player (and they cannot use IR prior to Thursday unless they want to lose that IR player for the season).Likely not. But it’s a bit of an unnecessary gamble, no? I think you gotta keep one.
What really hurts is when you see who went right after Thornton and Zappe, Pickens/Pierce/Sky Moore all drafted immediately after Tyquan, all will have much better seasons and Howell was drafted about 10 spots after Zappe. Don't think anyone will be surprised if he has a better year than Mac. They really need to overhaul the scouting dept around the skill positions, outside of hitting on Rham in the 4th rd the track record sucks the last several years.Well, hasn't been the best summer for the Pats 2022 draft picks:
Strange and Thornton both hurt. Jack Jones facing gun charges. Strong traded. Harris, Zappe, Hines, and Stueber cut. To be fair, the cuts are all 4th, 6th, and 7th rounders.
Howell has had all of one NFL start in which he was asked to do very little. I don't get too broken up if a 4th round pick doesn't pan out. The ceiling for most 4th rounders is special teams contributor and reserve player. What really hurts is when you see who went right after Thornton and Zappe, Pickens/Pierce/Sky Moore all drafted immediately after Tyquan, all will have much better seasons and Howell was drafted about 10 spots after Zappe. Sure but he did look really bad and not as good as he looked last year. Weird arm angles worse accuracy indecisivenessWas the terrible OL play not a factor, though?
Yeah I should've been clearer in that it's that less about "Arizona will pick him up" than indicating other teams QB situations, especially beyond their starter, are kinda bad. With that said, you're right that Dobbs knows the system but Dobbs also wasn't exactly good at any point either, and you look at other second and third stringers being rostered and those teams are screwed if their starting QB gets hurt.Dobbs has experience in the system though. Big difference this time of year when you are looking for a fill-in. Though I agree there is some risk. Patriots obviously see the risk to be worthwhile compared to other players. Teams can elevate up to 2 practice squad players each week. And players can be elevated up to 3 times each before they must get signed to the regular roster.Does anyone recall the rules for elevating guys from the PS? I think the Pats plan here looks to be: keep the players they think are the best, and where that leaves the roster thin, elevate guys from the PS.
