Yeah we are all wishing the Sox just traded everyone at the last 2 deadlines to truly restock for 2024 and beyond. Instead they played wishy washy and had a mediocre record.

If going 3-14 and getting a top 3 pick means a quicker path back to the playoffs, I'm all for it.

My current worst nightmare is beating the Jets and having it cost us the #1 pick.
I'm really hoping Aaron Rodgers comes back in time for that game.

But honestly, couldn't you see the Jets holding the Pats completely scoreless in that game, while mustering a field goal or a TD (maybe a defensive one)? I can. Easily.

I totally get what you're saying but this is what a lot of critics have been saying is the WORST thing for the team long term. Yeah, have a mediocre season, hoping to MAYBE get into the playoffs before getting whipped by an actual good team.

Like, that's worlds better than 2-9 like we're experiencing, but that's the limbo that everyone is saying this team needed to avoid in order to truly rebuild.
That ship has also sailed for 2023. I'd rather have the Broncos and Steelers season right now, too, but once you're 2-8, you're smoking some serious hopium if you think it's somehow better to win game 11 than lose it.

Not saying I wouldn't take 7-4 and in a playoff position but the Steelers feel like a house of cards. -23 point differential, pythag is closer to 5-6, get outgained every week, 7-1 in one possession games. They are closer to being a bottom 10 team in the league than a top 10 team in my opinion.

For their fans the entertainment of a competitive, playoff season is great but they also seem like a team that could bottom out in a hurry.

I'd love to be having the Broncos' or the Steelers' season right now. Call it mediocrity, or whatever, but it's basically what we are aspiring to right now. One good draft is not going to change that -- even if we end up 2-15 and get the second pick, and get a franchise type player we're not suddenly going to become the Chiefs or the 2000-20 Patriots. The Steelers' and the Broncos' 2023 season is pretty much what we can aspire to in 2024 in the best case scenario. Winning record after Thanksgiving, some thrilling wins, and a chance to make noise in the playoffs. That's what we're aspiring to, and so, yeah, I'd rather have it right now instead of some fools' gold hope that losing is actually going to suddenly revive the glory days.
It took the Texans one draft to change the trajectory of their franchise.

If you get "the guy" you're going to be in a great spot. But that is rare. The Jets thought they got the guy in Zach. Carolina with Young.

But you need the Burrow or Stroud, not the Mac or Lance.

The problem is that if you're losing and losing and losing, it means the young players you'd like to be growing and developing suck. Cole Strange was our first round pick a year ago; he stinks right now. Marte Mapu can't get on the field on defense. Tyquan Thornton barely plays and stinks. Keion White is doing nothing. Vederian Lowe got benched. Boutte is buried. Mac is obviously complete garbage right now. If we're going to go 2-15, that means we get nothing out of these guys, and that's the worst case scenario. If some of these guys start playing well, we oughta win a couple games.

EDIT: I'd rather be 6-11 with the 10th pick and 12 holes to fill than 3-14 with the 3rd pick and 20 holes to fill.

Yeah, this is what I was saying in the BB thread about whether we should fire BB midseason -- he gets until the end of the year, because we weren't really sure if the last couple drafts were solid and there should be plenty of time in meaningless games for the guys from the last two drafts to get playing time. If those guys don't show anything, that means that the last 5 drafts have been mostly bad -- a full rookie contract cycle after the Brady era -- and we need to get someone else in charge of the next one.

Sometimes even bad teams have good young players. The 1992 team, despite going 2-14, had Ben Coates, Vincent Brown, Marv Cook, Kevin Turner among their younger players.

You know way more about football than I do, but I think it comes down to how you see the Pats filling the QB spot, the ultimate hole. I think everyone is in agreement that the next great Patriots QB is not on the current roster. How do we get him? When I look at the guys I wish were on the Pats, they all seem to have been drafted very highly:

- Trevor Lawrence, 1
- Josh Allen, 7
- Joe Burrow, 1
- Tua, 5
- Herbert, 6
- CJ Stroud, 2

The outliers are Lamar, Mahomes at 10 (I guess), and Jalen Hurts, and probably Russ and Dak.

Obviously, there are the Goffs and Kylers of the world, too. A high pick is no guarantee. But it kind of seems like you need to get a shot at picking the best QB available. Is that going to happen at #10? Maybe it will.

Of course, watch the Pats draft someone 1-3 and then have that player sit out for the year, continue to play in college, and collect NIL money instead :)

There are so many highly picked QBs who suck but you picked two guys who do not.

Goff is actually a decent starting QB. He isn't a top 5 guy but if you give him protection he can execute well. Goff's reputation is bullshit. He has met and exceeded all the Lions coaching staff challenges. He has this reputation as being a joystick//headset from his McVay days but he is a lot more than that.

Kyler has been a decent QB too! I'd be happy having either one of those guys. Kyler has some studying//off-field drama but what he has done on the field is a positive.

Edit: Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance are the top recent guys to fail.
Edit 2: I should emphasize I would take their production numbers. I don't want Kyler Murray for off-field reasons.

Great.

Not only do they suck, they have next to no young talent on the roster.

They are going to need a multi year complete rebuild.

I don't want Belichick anywhere near something like that, just clean house top to bottom and start over.

Now I'm really depressed.

I just meant that Goff and Kyler are high picks that are pretty good, but not in the tier of the dudes I listed. You can debate whether they can win a super bowl for you. My next sentence meant to sum up the Treys and Wilsons of the world.

What the hell happened to Mapu? There was a ton of hype after the pick saying this kid makes a living tackling everything. Kid hits the bench hard I guess. Could have been a good story this year.

The consensus right now is that this is a two QB draft. Right now we're picking third. If we can get into the Williams / Maye sweepstakes (if we like those guys), you're right, that changes the math.

Or, as your post implies, the landscape at the top of the draft changes. A Richardson-like rise by Jayden Daniels wouldn’t be shocking.

I genuinely don’t know what to make of Maye, Williams, or Daniels at this point - the lead-up to the draft will be fascinating.

And, beyond sorting the gold from the dross among the current elites, QBs irrationally rising after bowl/showcase bowls, combines, etc. is like the swallows returning to Capistrano. Every guy we think might be had by trading back into the first or grabbing early in the second will be mocked at #12 by President's Day.

I think we're only picking third right now because the Cardinals have played one more game and so have a worse winning percentage, but if we had the same record I think we jump them on SOS. It's hard to know what SOS will be at the end of the year, but I think if we stay at 2 wins, we have a good chance at getting the 2 spot. Tankathon, which looks at all 17 opponents has our SOS .536 and Arizona at .558. Again, I think that includes all the teams on the schedule, not just the ones played. If that's wrong, we really need AZ to win another game, because we have a tough schedule remaining.

The 25 year-old guy who played six years at a low tier ncaa college, and was lightly ranked?

Here’s the first post in his draft thread.
Apr 28, 2023With Josh Downs and others on the board, BB strikes again with another maddening mid-round pick.

Let's talk about it, I gues
Ps. Josh Downs has 48 catches for the Colts

At the time of that pick, Daniel Jeremiah and @SeoulSoxFan differed in the wisdom of that pick. Guess which one you quoted?

He might or might not work out, but the idea that he was a foregone bust is ahistorical.

Daniels is a year and a half older than Richardson, and I don't mean "a year and a half older than Richardson was at the same point in the draft cycle." He's kind of a known quantity coming into this year; I'd be surprised if he has that kind of rise (and most of the QB class aside from Williams / Maye is like this).

At this point, even if they're getting nothing from these players, they honestly should be playing them anyway. The rest of this year is really a tryout of sorts for the years to come. Boutte should be playing a lot, as should Thornton. Let them learn on the job. What's the worst that happens? They lose. So what? Losing at this point is preferable anyway. Mapu should play anyway.

It's disappointing Mapu has not at least gotten some of the Mack Wilson Sr snaps. That guy seems to bring very little to the table. Both Thornton and Boutte got more reps Sunday. I'd expect that to continue.

No free agent is going to come sign here, it will take a good deal more money wise to make anyone put ink to paper here, the state sucks, the weather sucks, the politicians suck, the taxes suck it is just an overall miserable place to be in the winter months. Then you add in the fact let's face it, imo this is the most disorganized team in the league this season and it's overall outlook moving forward is not all that bright right now. I also don't think it will be all that easy either to find a guy wanting to take over for Belichick, i mean that potential high draft pick is about the only positive this team has going for it right now.

Other then that the term dumpster fire comes to mind when looking towards the future here. I would think the highly sought after Coaching potentials will want to avoid this job....

Unfortunately, I could also see Tim Boyle tossing a game-turning pick six just as we're rubbing our hands together at the thought of drafting either Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.

I'd join your hope that Rodgers is back in time for that game, but it would be criminal to risk him getting injured again behind their tissue paper o-line if the Jets have no chance of making the playoffs.
But on the other hand, given our hopes rest in part on Rodgers' massive ego, there might still be a chance.

There will be ample coaching and GM candidates ready to jump at the job. And there are always free agents to be had.
