I don't know if that's the right number, but it really is amazing how one bad pitch is so momentous. Imagine if this had happened to Ellsbury as a pending FA in his last weeks with the Sox?

Why wouldn't teams and player want to wear better safety equipment? With the amount of money players make - teams should want to do everything possible to protect their investment. The same is true for players. That ball may have cost Stanton 200 million dollars or more. An improved helmet for batters along with facial protection for hitters seem like no brainers. Cost - benefit and all that.
It's not new technology...look at Terry Steinbach for instance:

Or look at hand/wrist injuries...Jeff Bagwell wore innovative gloves to prevent the injuries that cost him a lot of playing time from HBP...yet you don't see those in common use.

Cano got 240 million. Hard to see Stanton doing worse than that.  But if this injury ends his career or changes him as a player - a small fortune was squandered because teams don't wear more protective helmets at an additional cost of probably $50.

OK, I was thinking he would continue to play after this, but teams wouldn't open the coffers to the same extent.

MLB suspends P Anthony DeSclafini suspended 3 games for hitting a batter Thursday. Don't get it.

That's the Marlins pitcher who hit Gomez later in the game and was ejected

Not sure what Olney doesn't 'get' - the Marlins were emotionally amped up from the manager on down and clearly intended to hit someone on the Brewers.  Not a good situation - Redmond should be suspended as well, as should Fiers for gesturing to the Marlins dugout after hitting Johnson (I don't think that he hit either batter intentionally but his gestures escalated the tensions).

When I watched the replay of the Johnson pitch - it looked (and sounded) to me like McGehee was yelling at the ump about the swing call on the pitch, and Fiers thought McGehee was yelling at him and reacted to that - leading to the escalation.

Sounds as if Stanton is going to be just fine and there is even talk about him returning before the end of this season. All the talk about him losing $200 million, or so, was a little bit premature.

His hit has fired up a bunch of discussions on player safety..read these two this morning: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2196860-it-is-major-league-baseballs-turn-to-finally-address-player-safety and http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/buster-olney/post?id=8058&ex_cid=InsiderTwitter_OlneyStanton I definitely agree the mlb has to do a bit more with player safety...the equipment is there and available for players but they don't do a think to push it. Just sucks when you see a great player go out with something like this...Stanton stated he wants to return right away but it seems his injury will definitely keep him out the rest of the season.

I don't think there's been much question whether he's going to be fine physically. The question is how he handles getting back into the batter's box mentally. From what we've seen in columns, he wants to get back out there ASAP, which is encouraging, but I would like to see how he handles things once back first. I think he'll be ok, but you never know when it comes to the human brain.
