Along with fellow Caribbean outfielder Keury De La Cruz, Henry Ramos has given me another name to follow in the GCL. Drafted in the 5th round, Ramos is tall with a BIG frame. This kid looks like he can develop into a serious power hitter over time if he builds a good pro approach at the plate. Compared to photos I've seen of KDLC, his counterpart, I've got to say Ramos probably has 20-25 pounds on him, though he is 3 inches taller.
So far this year, Ramos has hit .303/.353/.454 with 3 HRs and a 9/25 BB/K in 128 PAs. Obviously needs to work on his plate discipline, as he is K'ing in almost 20% of his plate appearances to just a 7% walk rate, but that's not uncommon in the GCL. He's also 12/17 on steals, though I'd imagine as he fills in that 6-2 frame he'll likely stop being a base stealing threat. Despite being a switch hitter and a natural righty, he's crushed right-handed pitching and struggled badly vs. lefties (.226 average, 12 Ks in 56 PAs).
It's been a while since the Sox have had a pair of 18 year olds producing like KDLC and Ramos in the GCL. Given his approach at the plate still seems to need work, I'd imagine Ramos will play 2011 in Lowell, though perhaps Greenville isn't out of the question if the Sox really want to get aggressive. Didn't work out so hot for Almanzar though so they'll probably play it safe.
