Black Hawk legend Stan Mikita died today after suffering dementia for several years. I will always remember him as a Team Canada hero during the 72 Summit Series vs Russia.
I’ve always thought of Patrice Bergeron as another Stan Mikita- skill, heart, brains, demeanor on the ice, quiet, humble, kind off it. A true legend of the game. RIP.
What a great player he was. 4 scoring titles, 2 MVPs, and 2 Lady Byngs to top it off! The Lady Byngs illustrated a complete change in profile. His first (in 66/67) came just two years after garnering 154 PIM.
My first NHL hockey game as a kid was in Detroit with the Red Wings versus the Black Hawks. Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Frank Mahovlich, Garry Unger, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Keith Magnuson, Tony Esposito.
Class act. Did a lot for the hearing impaired and for special needs. Deserved to go out better (cancer and dementia suck).
22 years for one team, more games played for one single team than any other non-Red Wing.

I am old enough many of the dads, and all the grandpas accused him of ruining the game with the curved stick. There were also those who sais we were undeserving by buying curved sticks since Stan curved his own. My oldman had me boil an old Victoriaville and curve it then stick it in the snow, just to know what it was like.
