The man who hates baseball is in camp!

That shows he is at least interested in playing baseball this year. But how many games will it be?

Yeah, if you can guess some of the injuries that is bonus points.

I think he is going to get appendicitis that will knock him out for a month.

He plays the first 11 games, gets a day off before flying East, then plays the series opener at Fenway before getting lost on the MBTA on his way to the Saturday afternoon game.

I took a gander at Rendon's game logs as an Angel on BRef. His first season was 2020, the COVID year, each team played only 60 regular season games. He played 52, ostensibly a "full" season, and his OPS+ was 150, on par with his previous three seasons with the Nationals. And then each season since had followed the same pattern: Start the season healthy and on the injured list by July 5th.

2021: 58 games, last game on July 4th, OPS+ 94
2022: 47 games, last game (excluding two meningless games in October) on June 14, OPS+ 100
2023: 43 games, last game on July 4th, OPS+ 88

So anyone picking more than 60 games is putting a lot of faith in Anthony Rendon playing through Independence Day unscathed. I'm not one of them. 53 games before he breaks his ankle trying not to dive for a grounder to his left on Independence Day.

Put me down for 110 games.

He’s going to have to earn playing time (especially after his ill-considered remarks), and at his age some kind of nagging thing popping up seems more likely than not, but his spate of injuries the past few years looks like a string of bad luck — first a hip injury, then a wrist injury, and most recently a broken leg bone that wasn’t immediately diagnosed as such.

Indeed: he was actually a joy to watch back then.

I'll go with 19 games, since 2019 was the Nats Championship season and the last time he really mattered to the game.

So using scientific logic and reasoning, I'll split the difference and go with 97 games.

He was actually really good during the COVID year. Perfect setup for a guy who doesn’t want to play.

The injury is a hamstring that always leaves him two weeks out from coming back, letting the few Angel fans I know out here cling to the hope that he'll come back and help the team.

I'll say 87 because that was the number in the Donner Party (who, like Rendon, migrated from the east to California) and Rendon is an anagram for Donner. (Or should I take 48 because that's the number of people in the Donner Party who survived?)

His brother Keith loved to play baseball, he just didn't like watching it on TV.

Rendon made a big mistake telling the truth publicly like that. I'm sure many other players feel the same way but don't say it out loud.
I will guess 118 games played for him this year.

Yeah, I'm surprised to learn about all of this. He seemed like a standard-issue "baseball dude" to me. I wonder how many other players out there secretly (or not so secretly) view baseball this way?

Having established an impeccable cover as an oft-injured player who doesn't care for the game, Anthony Rendon will spend the first 1/3 of the season doing the two things he loves--playing baseball and spending time with his family. Every day he'll come to the ballpark and revel in the joys of team camaraderie, the sun shining as he effortlessly uses his peak athleticism to excel in the sport, chatting with the fans he adores. Every evening, he'll cook--chocolate chip pancakes a favorite of his young daughter.

But then he'll get the call. He's needed again. This time, Kyrgyzstan. A border dispute with Tajikistan over water rights has Putin meddling and only one man can protect this fledgling democracy and the free press they've fought so hard to establish. Only one man can fight from the shadows against former KGB assassination plots, rousing a small village to fight an invading wave of Wagner Group mercenaries led by zombie Prigozhin, re-animated with the aid of Putin's dark sorcerer. Rendon must use his exceptional hand-eye coordination not to entertain, but to kill.

To Angels fans, it'll appear like another injury, a broken rib from sneezing after rolling over a water glass in a hotel room. Rendon's family knows better, but they're sworn to secrecy, to sacrifice, to a man that sends hidden messages in large Kyrgyz hats.

He'll return in September, shatter his big toe with a foul ball, and sit in his darkened den watching the Angels make their first playoffs in a decade.
