How to Add a Starting Pitcher

How should the Sox add a SP?

  • Sign Snell, give up the draft pick, a buckle in (for both the contract $ and performance)

  • Sign Montgomery, he's more stable, and can eat innings for a few years at least

  • Trade for potential #2 or better SP, giving up at least one of the top 3 prospects

  • Trade for a back of the rotation starter, without giving up Mayer, Teel, or Anthony

  • Add nothing, let B&B work with the 6 they have.

I thought one of the choices should have been "Continue to dumpster dive on short term deals in the FA market". Because that is what I'm guessing they're going to do. Breslow should just identify which of Paxton, Clevinger, Ryu, Lorenzen he and Bailey think they can squeeze the most out of. I'm not saying this is what they should do, but probably similar to what they will.
I agree. I think they got got surprised that the market went crazy for Yamamoto when they thought they had an inside track, and I don't have any interest in Snell or Montgomery at big years and dollars. I would be okay with a "dumpster dive" based on their (hopefully) elite knowledge of pitcher analytics, and they sign one of your list for 1 or 2 years that ends up surprising us with his performance.

I think this team can give us some fun baseball to watch and maybe even make some noise this postseason with one more solid starting pitcher and a right-handed bat with power.

If I were in Breslow’s shoes, I’m signing Jordan Montgomery because he’s a good bet to solidify the rotation for the next three seasons. For an innings eater, he’s pitched relatively few innings for his age and his TJ surgery was recent enough that he’s unlikely to blow out his elbow again anytime soon. Sure, they’ll probably be paying half his salary to pitch for someone else on the backend, but they should be able to swing that with all the young hitters moving up through the system.

Next, I’d trade Kenley and Duran for the best upper minors starting pitching prospect(s) I can get. If Verdugo can get a guy like Fitts and an interesting reliever then I’d think that package should be able to fetch something similar. Then, I take Kenley’s money and use it to sign Soler or Rhys Hoskins to bat in between Devers and Casas. Whichever of the two who requires the lesser commitment should be fine. Either Soler splits time with Yoshida between LF and DH or Hoskins becomes the primary DH and backs up 1B.

I think these moves make the team competitive and potentially even dangerous while still remaining under the CBT tax this season. I’m not against going over, but maybe there’s an argument for waiting until more of the young players in the system are producing in Boston.

I think what we will get is something like Clevenger. The trade market seems too expensive for Boston. They probably think Snell/Montgomery aren't worth it.

I'll be really surprised if it's Clevinger, for the obvious PR reasons.

I voted Montgomery, but it seems unlikely to happen, and actually seems likely I'll be happy they didn't give him whatever he gets.

In the likely event there is not an actual top of the rotation starter to be had, whatever happened to the Yariel Rodriguez chatter? Does anyone actually think he can be a starter? Reported to have nasty stuff, will be 27 but with lost/weird development time in his defection from Cuba and exit from Japan. Fangraphs predicts he gets 3/$30M, MLBTR predicts 4/$32M. At that price (maybe with bonuses for IP), he could be an interesting gamble.
I admit that I had completely forgotten about YR; I had pencilled him in alongside Imanaga as an interesting arm, although without a track record to work from.

He wants to start per reports, but has been out of NPB, so way be hard to align with the innings build up to start this year. Maybe they build him up, piggybacking him with someone like Whitlock… the gap between innings and expectations might give them a chance to get creative with the contract.
