The statement noted the defenceman from Colonsay, Sask. was awake, but unable to speak.
“However, each day, he gets a little stronger and we are getting signs from him about what he is thinking,” the family wrote.
Matechuk was transferred to Saskatoon City Hospital this week to continue his recovery process.
The family added it seemed Matechuk didn’t remember the crash.
“He doesn’t appear to know what has happened.”
In the statement, the family said they’ve been “overwhelmed” by support from friends and strangers.
But they noted they don’t have an easy path ahead.
“We wish we could tell you it’s getting easier. The reality is – it’s not. At this point, we are not sure when Layne will get to leave hospital. But, what we can tell you is that we believe he gets a little closer every day.”

Gobeil still can't walk or talk, but the family says it remains "hopeful that those will be the kind of milestones we will someday be able to celebrate.
Zamboni appears to have cut the ice too low. Pulling up an in ice advertisement. They finally fixed it. We scored with 2:41 left to tie it. Waiting on O/T to start. What the hell is wrong that requires a 30 minute repair right after the Zamboni? I had to switch rinks one time after the second period of a game because the Zam cut the ice too low and basically led to exposed concrete behind the nets (and a skate sharpening that was turned useless) but that seemed to be gross incompetence.
I watched it. It was the best and worst thing I've ever watched at the same time. The E:60 on the one year anniversary is very well done, but just emotionally gutting.
