I loved Jaylen precisely because of what he did and does for his community. It's clear he's really smart and cares deeply about the problems affecting his community.
I don't know about anyone else, but when I see a guy like that rise to prominence, there's the hope that he's one of those who just 'gets it.' In general. So then when he implies support for people who are actively promoting racism against other communities, it's sad.
Like, I get it. The Black community has its own set of memes and inherited beliefs, like any other. Like any other community, some are toxic. It's human enough to buy into them. I'm not at the stage of condemning him for it, though I wouldn't blame Jewish folks who would. It feels a lot like JK Rowling early on when I was very much like "Eh, she's a 70s feminist, those guys did good work but had worrying blind spots about trans issues and she associated with a lot of people who fit that mold, but she's never said anything outright bigoted herself."
Maybe he goes down the dark path, maybe he ends up being one of those activist types who has the odd troubling view, but still ends up majority positive for what he does with the issues he's on the right side of. But it's still a little disappointing.
