I'd laugh if the deal gets scuttled because the Padres don't like the medicals of one of the Yankees.
I think it would just get reworked then, it's going to happen as has been clear for weeks.I'd laugh if the deal gets scuttled because the Padres don't like the medicals of one of the Yankees.
Agreed. We never even heard of another team seriously involvedI think it would just get reworked then, it's going to happen as has been clear for weeks.
This was the reported ask from the Padres on Friday which everyone was kind of saying was way too big of an ask.Agreed. We never even heard of another team seriously involved
& then there were reports that the Blue Jays were "serious contenders" & desperate & maybe offering Tiedemann & Manoah or whatever, & then the Padres I guess dropped the 2 other mystery pitchers, Higgy was added, & they called it a day.According to league sources briefed on talks, San Diego was asking for pitcher Michael King, pitching prospect Drew Thorpe, and as many as four or five other prospects like Randy Vasquez and Jhony Brito. San Diego was also interested in salary relief not just for Soto but for center fielder Trent Grisham, sources say.
Well, the 7 names that were rumored in one of the packages was King AND Schmidt, Thorpe, Vazquez, Brito and two prospects for Soto and Grisham. This was the reported ask from the Padres on Friday which everyone was kind of saying was way too big of an ask.

But yeah, the Yankees were always by far the most logical fit, though & able to give the Padres like 18 years of pretty good pitcher control for 1 year of Soto without blowing up their entire structure in the process.
I think that was more in the initial "look at all these names stage" but even then it seemed to be more King OR Schmidt & Thorpe OR Hampton + pieces.Well, the 7 names that were rumored in one of the packages was King AND Schmidt, Thorpe, Vazquez, Brito and two prospects for Soto and Grisham.
Schmidt isn't in the final deal (as far as we know). And frankly, I am glad they are holding on to him. He really became a dependable arm and I am much more confident in him pitching more innings than King (though probably not AS good) and has two more years of control.
SD only wanted pitching.FWIW, Baseball Trade Values says Durran + Houck is a very close equivalent to King + Thorpe.
The Yankees are absolutely keeping him beyond this year unless his NY experience is so bad that he wants out. It’s amazing a guy this talented is on his third team already and likely will be on a fourth team a year from now unless the yankees pony up 400-500 million in the next 12+ months.
What’s amazing is the Padres miscalculated this badly on their own winning window and are selling off the guy that was supposed to put them over the top a year later. It’s amazing a guy this talented is on his third team already and likely will be on a fourth team a year from now unless the yankees pony up 400-500 million in the next 12+ months.
Yes, but it was owner driven so hard to really fault the management team. What’s amazing is the Padres miscalculated this badly on their own winning window and are selling off the guy that was supposed to put them over the top a year later.
That’s just atrocious management from them.
The Padres very clearly went all in trying to win a championship for their owner who was in failing health. They did not succeed, and the reset is kind of expected. What’s amazing is the Padres miscalculated this badly on their own winning window and are selling off the guy that was supposed to put them over the top a year later.

Yes. I guess I meant resource management more than general manager management.Yes, but it was owner driven so hard to really fault the management team.
I mean, it was owner-driven and he got to see them make a run to the 2022 NLCS, including knocking off the hated Dodgers in the NLDS, before he died, so I disagree. What’s amazing is the Padres miscalculated this badly on their own winning window and are selling off the guy that was supposed to put them over the top a year later.

Yup. It definitely sucks for them, especially the X contract. The Nats made out quite well in this, especially if James Wood hits his potential.Yes. I guess I meant resource management more than general manager management.
Yeah exactly. If the Yankees aren’t giving him that much money, who is? Guessing he’s extended before his Yankee debut:The Yankees are absolutely keeping him beyond this year unless his NY experience is so bad that he wants out.
The Mets.Yeah exactly. If the Yankees aren’t giving him that much money, who is? Guessing he’s extended before his Yankee debut:

Zero chance? The Yankees aren’t the biggest fish in the pond anymore.
Zero chance Boras doesn’t take him to free agency to generate a bidding war for Gen Z Ted Williams.
They gave up a huge package to get him. This is like .30 cents on the dollar compared to what they gave up IMO.How does the package the Padres paid for Soto compare with the one they’re rumored to be receiving for him from the Yankees?
It's the difference between 2 1/2 seasons and 1 season, plus he will be paid more in 2024 (around $33M) than 2022 ($17M) or 2023 ($23M), but the SD package was way way bigger. How does the package the Padres paid for Soto compare with the one they’re rumored to be receiving for him from the Yankees?
Right. If anything,, "2 1/2 seasons" undersells it. It's 3 postseasons vs 1.It's the difference between 2 1/2 seasons and 1 season, plus he will be paid more in 2024 (around $33M) than 2022 ($17M) or 2023 ($23M), but the SD package was way way bigger.

If they can wait a few more days and announce it on the 11th they can commemorate the six year anniversary of the last generational talent the Yankees acquired via trade, Giancarlo “Mike” Stanton. If this isn’t finalized until after midnight, tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of Judge re-signing in NY.
Sox fighting A-Bombs with spit balls.Who cares if they got Soto. We got Justin Slaten.

Slight addendum to that calculus. The Yankees turned all those pieces and around $45 something million in additional salary for 2024 (I'm not sure what King will get, the Yankees group is somewhere around $48M to $50M total). While the Yankees have a bigger budget than almost anyone, that's a giant chunk of change with only Grisham under control past this year, and the Yankees have sent out a bunch of potentially cost controlled guys in exchange. It's the difference between 2 1/2 seasons and 1 season, plus he will be paid more in 2024 (around $33M) than 2022 ($17M) or 2023 ($23M), but the SD package was way way bigger.

Very helpful, thank you. It's the difference between 2 1/2 seasons and 1 season, plus he will be paid more in 2024 (around $33M) than 2022 ($17M) or 2023 ($23M), but the SD package was way way bigger.

I didn't read that yet, but zero chance. Once the deal is actually finalized, I will run through where NY stands.Jon abbey, Crow and other yankee followers: do you think there is a realistic chance of the Yankees cutting Stanton?
That is what Ben Clemons argues for in his Fangraphs write-up of the deal. I was wondering how much that possibility is being discussed in the NYY media/fan sphere.
All fair, but this lack of control is actually a perfect fit for NY, let me explain.Slight addendum to that calculus. Thanks j.a. With four years remaining, that’s what I figured…I didn't read that yet, but zero chance. Once the deal is actually finalized, I will run through where NY stands.
Any idea what the "issues" are? This tweet makes it sound like less of a sure thing than has been reported the last few hours. I'm sure it will get done but, as a Sox fan, I can still hold out hope!
Nope, and it's never done until it's done, especially with Preller involved.Any idea what the "issues" are? This tweet makes it sound like less of a sure thing than has been reported the last few hours. I'm sure it will get done but, as a Sox fan, I can still hold out hope!
They expected more and believe the padres didn't need to trade Soto.Anyone hearing anything about the Padres' fan perspective on the deal? My Twitter, and here, is very Yankees focused.
Unrealistic and way more unrealistic, respectively. They expected more and believe the padres didn't need to trade Soto.
