I love this thing, but the battery life is pretty terrible if it's not plugged in.

I was downloading a couple things from Steam and I think I got 2 1/2 hours of battery before it died. Besides the obvious, hey maybe don't download shit without it being plugged in, should I be doing other things to increase the battery life? I'll be using mostly away from the charger, so this is pretty important to me.

Also, any general tips would be great. I saw the old thread, but it didn't really have much in the way of advice.

No tips on the battery life front for you.

I know I've been having issues with my Surface Pro 2 when trying to quote posts and such here, but for what I use it for (on the road to keep up with the world), it functions as it should.
I haven't played any hardcore games on mine either. Mostly OOTP 14 (not recently) and Democracy 3, but haven't noticed any glaring issues with the battery life.

Did you grab a Type Cover as well?

Battery life shouldn't be negatively impacted by downloading and installing things. I generally get 8+ hours on mine with web/mail/document/simple game usage, but it gets killed if I try to play a desktop game. Were you actually launching those Steam games? Because that can drop you down to zero in a couple of hours.

The trick for quoting posts here is to add the site to the compatibility mode list. Go to the Desktop IE, click the gear, and choose Compatibility Mode. Add sonsofsamhorn.net to the list. After that, both the modern IE and desktop IE will allow you to quote posts properly. You'll just have slightly screwed up drop-down menus for font and text size.

I played like 2 matches of Hearthstone, and launched one of the two games to see if it worked. Other than that, I was browsing the web and watching a couple videos.
