Credit to Anfield HQ - they got an interview with Teixeira in Miami. Something tells me Shakhtar won't be thrilled he gave the interview. Essentially, he wants very much to go to Liverpool, and the initial bid rejected by Shakhtar was €32m, not £32m (closer to £24.3m).

Such a shameful interview. The player needs to know his place! How dare he agitate for a move! Players can't be tapped up like this it isn't good for the game!

(am i doing this right?)

Ehh, I'd argue there's a difference between a 20 year old turning down over £100k per week in his domestic league to force a move, and a 26 year old who was convinced last year to stay one more season, wants to leave the a league in a war-torn nation, and whose club sold Willian, Douglas Costa, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the past 2 years.

Your greater point that football contracts are essentially meaningless and players of a certain skill level are essentially omnipotent in determining their destination is well-taken.

If that was your point ;)

Edit: I will say the interview probably backfired in that Shakhtar know Liverpool fans have a greater expectation that Teixeira will be signed and thus have more pressure on them to pony up the £38m.

My gut says it gets done for ~£34m

Small quibble .. I believe the price being demanded by Shaktar is 38m Euros and not sterling.

Honestly, I don't like it any more when Liverpool do it than when it's done to them. Between the tabloid media and agents, there's leaks regardless of whether a club is officially reaching out or not. I wish they would just completely ban contact between a player under contract and another club until he is given permission by his club to negotiate personal terms.

Nothing tops Sir Rednose tapping up Hargreaves for 3 years to get him away from Bayern. Of course he then spent the next 3 seasons in the trainer's room.

Ah may be the case - I saw £38m from James Pearce at the Echo:

But for all the ongoing speculation, little progress has been made and Liverpool have yet to officially increase their bid.

The reason why is that Shakhtar remain adamant that Teixeira is going nowhere unless their asking price of 50million Euros (£38million) is met in full.

With Liverpool unwilling to pay that kind of money for an uncapped 26-year-old, the deal has reached an impasse.

It would now take a serious change of heart from either side for the deadlock to be broken.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "Unbelievable game. We should always think it is possible, although it was not easy today. We had a lot of problems at the start. There was a bit of searching for confidence but then we played a bit of football and saw what is possible.

"Set plays, set plays, set plays, and the game changed, the opponent got a bit more confident. When I saw five minutes of overtime I couldn't understand why.

"I think we were the deserved winner in a spectacular game. I think it is a new record but we have to solve our problems because this will not always be possible.

"Of course we were lucky, but we were not too lucky when they equalised in overtime. It is very emotional. We are in the middle of the chaos and react, sometimes we know what we are doing, sometimes we don't. The game is enough of a story."
Fletch, I'm posting here because I'm seeking your insight, and I thought I'd have the best chance of catching your attention in the Liverpool thread.

There is a song from 2015 that I've really enjoyed. It's called "St. Anthony: An Ode to Anthony H Wilson" by Mike Garry and Joe Duddell. Here's the tune:

Can you give any insight into Tony Williams? I want to like the guy, mostly because I like the song. To me, the song seems like a wonderful tribute and greatly captures a time and place. Part of me wants to believe Tony's some storied figure, a man of his time, a voice of his generation, or perhaps just a dynamic character in an era searching for an identity. The truth, though, may reflect he's just another blowhard or over-hyped. Anyways, at worst, the song mentions Roy Keane, but sadly does not mention that remarkable beard. Can't get it all right, I suppose.

Risky business to be demanding the £53m release clause for an uncapped 26 year old... I didn't want to believe it but it looks more and more like Konoplyanka v 2.0

Not expecting anything significant today. Škrtel, Coutinho, Origi, and Sturridge (lol) are back in training.

I grew up watching Tony Wilson present the regional north-west news though it wasn't until I was older that I realised he had another job - that of being a music mogul and record label owner with Factory Records, responsible for Joy Division, Happy Mondays and New Order.

He loved his music but wasn't the greatest businessman in the world so finances were always an issue - he also owned the Hacienda club in Manchester which is where the Madchester music scene really took off in the 80's.

Check out the movie '24 Hour Party People' which has Steve Coogan playing a character loosely based on Wilson.

A really nice bloke by all accounts - a professional 'Northerner' in the sense that he felt the north of England was continually getting shafted by central government in London (and he was right), Man Utd fan (so he did have his down side) but adored his music. Check out any writing regarding Factory Records and Anthony H Wilson (the name he used in the business rather than Tony on TV) looms large.

Having digested that...

Sakho was a disaster yesterday. He shared fault for the first with Lovren, though Vardy's strike couldn't have been expected. Allowing the ball to bounce in the build up for the second was Sunday League. Fittingly, This Is Anfield rated him a 6/10. Normally he's an 8 and man of the match.

There are no creative ideas right now, nor is there any clinical finishing to make something happen from nothing. Leicester City have been fairly leaky (though improved of late). It's difficult to be too angry at a loss to the league leaders but they should at least be able to net one.

To your point about the finishing: Is it really hard to find value in the January window now? They've brought in Sturridge (before his body completely betrayed him) and Suarez in past January windows? Has the market changed drastically?

Chelsea were basically begging someone to make an offer for Loic Remy, who might be off the Liverpool radar due to his rapeyness in his past (I don't think he really failed their physical--I think Henry pulled the plug), but he's an example of how there are guys out there. Another example is Charlie Austin, who's a proven EPL scorer who QPR finally unloaded for 4M in this window after wanting 10M-15M earlier.

Well done for taking that on mate, i never noticed, not been on SOSH much last wee while. Tony Wilson also famously said, If there was a holy grail Mark E Smith would be the only one allowed to touch it.

And Barney of New Order famously said of Tony "You're a cunt, you ruined my career"

And Tony Wilson famously said "Musicians are assholes" - Control and Joy Division are also fine films.

Many thanks for this information -- great stuff and helpful in understanding the context of the song. I'll be sure to check out these films. I appreciate the recommendations. Cheers.

35 straight minutes of passing it around outside the Sunderland area, with 10 Saints players guarding the goal, with a bunch of cross attempts to short guys that get cleared. This is not the most entertaining game I've ever seen.

If they're letting Southampton play on the same pitch, no wonder Liverpool can't break through.

It's a few minutes until a scheduled walkout to protest ticket prices. I'll be interested to see how many people leave.

The second goal definitely would make it easier for people, if they maintain this lead.
