MLB season opener on March 19 is completely ridiculous. We haven’t even had the first “real” game of March Madness yet.
What's the solution?MLB season opener on March 19 is completely ridiculous. We haven’t even had the first “real” game of March Madness yet.
I was going to say "Why should MLB give a rat's ass about college basketball?" but your answer was betterWhat's the solution?
Reduce the playoffs? Not going to happen.
Reduce the regular season? Not going to happen.
Stop trying to promote the game outside of North America? Not going to happen.
The only downside to starting the season in mid-March and having the season run into November is increased chances of playing in bad weather. Otherwise, as a fan, the more days with baseball the better. The worst part of the year is the time between the end of the World Series and the start of spring training because there's no baseball to watch.
A 3am first pitch in LA/SD probably won't lead to great ratings but the novelty alone garners it more attention, I imagine. It was special enough for me to watch and the chances of me watching a Dodgers-Padres game live in any other circumstance are pretty small. I'm awake 6am-9am eastern far more often than I'm awake at 10pm-1am.I wonder if this game and tomorrow’s will get better ratings and more discussion than they would have on some random day in April. Or May. Or June. Etc.
I can’t speak for the rest of the country, but this was all over the LA morning news shows today. And not just “the Dodgers are hosting the Padres tonight, so expect traffic near the stadium” like the usual coverage extends to.
Opposite for me but that doesn’t matter. They can still promote the game in Asia without having the games there in mid-MarchI'm awake 6am-9am eastern far more often than I'm awake at 10pm-1am.
Tv ratings here will most likely be terrible, the people who care about these teams the most were sound asleep.I wonder if this game and tomorrow’s will get better ratings and more discussion than they would have on some random day in April. Or May. Or June. Etc.

Who cares? You almost certainly wouldn't watch these games if they were on the same day as every other Opening Day and you almost certainly won't watch these teams play in their first week back in the US, there's not exactly a limited supply of regular season MLB games. Actually, doing the math, there are 2430 regular season games, I doubt almost anyone not being paid to do so watches much more than maybe 300 of those. They can still promote the game in Asia without having the games there in mid-March
Maybe Scott Boras set the ticket prices. From the inning or two i caught before going to work i seen many open seats which was surprising, i would think a 2 game set in Korea with the best team in the league would draw a sell-out but it sure as hell didn't look like it to me.
If I was in SoCal, I would care very much.Who cares? You feeling any better about missing out on him?Yamamoto down 2-0 9 pitches into his MLB career:
Bogaerts 1B
Tatis Jr. HBP
Cronenworth 2B
That would be embarrassing. He is up to 31 pitches now, a long AB here could knock him out.
It's a bit early.$300 million down the drain.
I had a terrible thought: You think he saw this coming, and that is why he got married? To have his wife now place his bets/take the blame? (a.k.a. the Peyton move.)I hope Shohei bet the over today
Plot twist. His wife is his bookie.I had a terrible thought: You think he saw this coming, and that is why he got married? To have his wife now place his bets/take the blame? (a.k.a. the Peyton.)
That's awesome!Plot twist. His wife is his bookie.
The golden boy with a huge betting scandal and now Yamamoto getting destroyed in his first start. Not how the Dodgers drew it up.There's maybe a 5 percent chance that will be the worst statistical start of Yamamoto's entire MLB career.
It never is. Spending a lot of money guarantees nothing. The Padres can attest to that as well. The golden boy with a huge betting scandal and now Yamamoto getting destroyed in his first start. Not how the Dodgers drew it up.
