Statement from Boston Bruins Medical Director Dr. Peter Asnis:

“Matthew Poitras underwent a successful right shoulder open stabilization (Latarjet) procedure today, February 7. The surgery was performed by Dr. Thomas Holovacs at Massachusetts General Brigham Hospital. The expected recovery time is approximately five months.”

Statement from Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney:

“Matt has been an important part of our team’s success thus far, and he will be missed. Our medical staff made the recommendation for Matt to proceed with the surgery rather than continue playing with an unstable shoulder and risking further damage. Everyone involved supported the decision as to do what was best for him at this time. Matt is just starting his Bruins career and is a key part of our future.”

That puts him right around the end of June, so hopefully he spends the summer after that in town working out at Warrior and he’s bigger and stronger heading into training camp.

That’s a tough break for the rookie. Still probably better he spent the part of the season in Boston than in the OHL. Hopefully he can rebound strong for next season, and that it’s not one of those lingering injuries that can derail young careers.

Poitras took a couple of nasty hits from behind into the boards at the World Juniors in his last game against Germany.
I wonder if those hits had anything to do with this injury.

In the most recent Behind the B, from before the WJC, he was in agony on the bench from a hit that may have started it all.

I seem to recall a particular hard hit of this nature in a pre-break B's game. I don't recall which game, but it was bottom left of camera angle.

Edit: This would seem to align with @joe dokes post above mine.

Believe it was in Arizona. He came back for a few games then missed the Flyers game before the break. Practiced coming out of the break but missed the morning skate on Tuesday for an appointment.

My guess is he could play through it but would need the surgery at some point (like Grzelyck and McAvoy) but they just decided it was before for everyone to get it done now so he can have the full summer to rehab and train and be ready for next season. He was going to lose ice time down the stretch anyway and the team saves a year of control.
