That's probably enough for them given the recent Leeds trends, but if something weird happens, but if a few things go weird in the next few weeks a limp point against an already relegated Watford could look haunting in hindsight.
Agreed, but OTOH I was listening to a post-match reacton pod last night. One of the hosts, who is generally harsh on the club for not taking its chances, said that this was a classic banana-skin game, that you see clubs slip up all the time in situations like this, you never know how already-relegated sides are going to play in DGAF mode, if someone had offered you 4 points from 6 in away games in the space of 3 days from a side which has not had a point away since December you would have grabbed it with both hands, that the 1 point is huge and the difference between 1 and 0 is more important than that between 1 and 3 right now, etc.
I'm inclined to agree - even though it was not a good look. Everton looked terrified to lose at times. They had the better of the game and had some clever bits that almost came off but the quality was not there. Their faults were exposed - against a truly awful side, they lack the creativity to boss the game. But Lampard was too conservative. They've had success with a 3 CB setup, and Mykolenko and Iwobi as wingbacks. But Iwobi has been our best player under Lampard (read that again, you're not hallucinating) and he's thrived centrally. His decision making is still not great and his touch deserts him, but his work rate is off the charts and he is a nightmare to play against with his strength and pace. Centrally he has been able to drive the team forward. Not as effective on the flank. There's no need to go five at the back against Watford. They could have used the extra body up front. Richarlison as the sole forward against Watford's galoot CBs is a waste. He's not going to win aerial battles against them but without any spark from midfield there was a lot of hoofball. DCL is still seemingly not match fit- he came on late but didn't do much - they really should have put Rondon up front as a holdup man and let Richarlison run at goal.
But they didn't lose, and the point is massive.
Everton: vs Brentford, vs Palace, @ Arsenal
Burnley: @ Spurs, @ Villa, vs Newcastle
Leeds: vs Brighton, @ Brentford
Leeds has one fewer game left, they lose any GD tiebreaker, their form is terrible, and they are depleted. All Everton need to do is get 2/9 points and Leeds need to win both. If Everton get only 1 point in the next three then Leeds need at least 4/6. If Everton get 4/9 or more Leeds are dead even if they win both.
Burnley are banged up defensively and they have the toughest run-in but they've been in better form before this week and we only need to finish ahead of one of them. Burnley also have the GD tiebreaker against Everton but with only two goal difference that reasonably could change.
Everton will likely not get anything away to Arsenal but they're very tough to beat at Goodison. A win against Brentford comes very close to eliminating Leeds even if Leeds win.
Having said that Watford-Everton was a dreadful game to watch.
