All this Penrod attention needs to stop! He isn't a major league caliber pitcher and any team that takes him in the Rule 5 draft will immediately regret it! Other teams should just forget about him, he's not going to be worth a roster spot. People are saying that any GM/PBO that drafts him will look like a fool. Not worth it. Don't do it.
Imagine if other franchises actually read this forum looking for information on Red Sox prospects lol

In all seriousness, not sure how great of a Rule 5 pick he'd be for another team. He needs to harness his control/command still & jumping from A+ to MLB while trying to do that would be pretty challenging & his upside isn't so high that it would necessarily be worth the roster spot, but I would still be disappointed if it happened.

He averaged 5.3 bb/9 in the Pioneer League, 4.8 bb/9 at Greenville, & 5.1 bb/9 in the AFL. That's not really the profile of a guy you want coming in from your pen to get MLB hitters out right now.

Exactly! Any team that drafts him is stupid, pass it on.

In the very likely event he never makes it in the majors, I will have these posts that prove how I totally predicted it!
And if he does make it, then I was obviously just joking.

I'll have to use the "I was just fooling opposing franchises" line the 1st time my #255 prospect makes it to MLB.

Side note: I think the stats about most AFL people making it to MLB in a couple years seems patently false. But I think it might definitely apply to the AFL Fall Star Game which Penrod partook in.

2 years ago the Red Sox had the following guys who have made it playing in the AFL:

Casas, Winckowski, Wong, Hamilton, Downs, Seabold

& the following guys who haven't:

Cottam, Cellucci, Koss, Politi

Of the people last year Abreu & Ward have made it, Kavadas, Perry, Scott, Webb, Yorke & Zeferjahn haven't.

The 2019 crop was Jarren Duran & Tanner Houck who made it, & then some other people I'm too lazy to check if they made it...

Yoan Aybar, Marcus Wilson, CJ Chatham, Jhonathan Diaz & Brett Netzer.

...& Bryan Mata was there back then, too.

Diaz has 35.1 IP over the past 3 years for the Angels.

Wilson had 6 PAs with the Mariners in '22.

The rest haven't.

Content-wise:

1) Parker doesn't seem to realize that Henrique has officially changed the pronunciation of this last name.

2) I was concerned we were going to go through the whole podcast without any content on what PENROD is planning on doing this off season in terms of improvement...& then we got the goals question & we got an answer of health, MLB & championships... which was mildly concerning instead of saying specific things he was looking to improve, but he probably just understood the question differently than I did.

3) Parker has a bit over 2 months to get Zaxby's to sponsor a Ft. Myers run. I envision a party bus, free food (it's the least Zaxby's can do), about 20 players, & a lot of good interviews & content.

If you don’t think that I won’t be shooting a video with Alex Binelas at the Zaxby’s down the road from JetBlue during Spring Training…. You better be ready for it lol

Found a weird article on Chan-Sol Lee.

1st of all, the bolded is blatantly untrue:

Lee stands at 6-foot-1 and has a 95-mile-per-hour fastball, according to FanNation. He reportedly joined the Red Sox with a $300,000 signing bonus, the second-largest the Boston club has ever given to a foreign free agent.
At first I thought this next stat was for the entire season, but apparently it's just a national tournament. Still not great, though.

Lee pitched 20 innings for Seoul High School, where he is currently a senior, during this year’s national high school baseball tournament, recording a 6.30 ERA with a WHIP of 1.75.
So he wants to pitch like Darvish & be like Ohtani. I guess we'll have to bring in Ohtani to mentor him.

Speaking on the sidelines of that tournament in May, Lee told reporters that his role models are major league pitchers Yu Darvish and Shohei Ohtani, Darvish for his pitching prowess and Ohtani for his personality both on and off the field.
This article feels AI generated.

Might have to do a live show when i’m down there for Spring Training at this point…

Also, very happy I asked him how to pronounce his name prior to the episode.

It’s pronounced REEM-ER and said almost everyone gets its wrong by saying RYE-MURR
I'm telling you, the party bus is the way to go.

3) Parker has a bit over 2 months to get Zaxby's to sponsor a Ft. Myers run. I envision a party bus, free food (it's the least Zaxby's can do), about 20 players, & a lot of good interviews & content.
J-Reems seems like a slightly less PG nickname than J-Rhymes, though.

MLB did an intriguing potential Rule 5 guy for each team & mentioned Bastardo for us:

Red Sox: Angel Bastardo, RHP (No. 16)
Bastardo doesn't have overwhelming stuff but misses a lot of bats with a 93-95 mph fastball that touches 97 with run and sink and a mid-80s changeup with similar life. Signed for $35,000 out of Venezuela in 2018, he posted a 4.68 ERA, .221 opponent average and 149 strikeouts in 119 1/3 innings between High-A and Double-A.
https://www.mlb.com/news/one-intriguing-rule-5-draft-prospect-for-each-team

I don't really see it based on his 3 starts at AA...16 IP, 5.06 ERA, 5.6 k/9, 5.1 bb/9. It's obviously a tiny sample size, but dropping from a 31.8% strikeout rate in Greenville to 14.5% in Portland would give me a boatload of hesitation before trying to shoehorn him onto my Major League roster.

I'm trying to decide if Jaret Godman (#197) is overrated, underrated, or properly rated.

Godman was a 19th round draft pick in '22. He got worse all 4 years at Oklahoma, which is pretty yikes...

'19 - 3.56 ERA, 1.23 WHIP
'20 - 5.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP
'21 - 6.49 ERA, 1.62 WHIP
'22 - 6.98 ERA, 1.91 WHIP

Godman started '22 as the closer for Oklahoma before losing the job.

He pitched 2 good FCL innings in '22, & started off the season in '23 closing games for Greenville, picking up saves in his 2nd & 4th outings.

In the 1st 4 games...

4 IP
1 run
2 hits
3 walks
6 strikeouts

2.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 6.8 bb/9, 13.5 k/9

In the next 3 games...

3.2 IP
6 runs
13 hits
1 walk
1 strikeout

14.73 ERA, 3.82 WHIP, 2.5 bb/9, 2.5 k.9

& then he went on the injured list for the remainder of the season.

So what does all this say about the 6'2 RHP from Vegas? The fact that Iggy Suarez entrusted him to close games early in the season has to be a good sign. & in the tiny sample sizes he was pitching well until he wasn't, which could be attributable to injury. Because of the closer thing, I probably have him ranked a bit low if he's healthy to start next year.

Speaking of TJ, here's the Taylor Broadway pod. & proof of life for Hand, which is necessary as his wife has clearly cut him off from SOSH.

View: https://twitter.com/ByAndrewParker/status/1730217446420668495
I think Parker misremembers the Zeferjahn interview. Pretty sure Zef was not excited about the fried chicken question but it was some other player who snitched on his love for CFA.

Broadway seems like a good dude, too. Very introspective about potential mental hurdles ahead of him.

Also, I think the TJ velo bump is a bit of a myth.

“The surgery may help you throw better than you did with a damaged UCL, but it isn’t a performance enhancement,” he says. “Tommy John surgery is not an elective surgery for ball players trying to improve their ability. It should be performed only when necessary.”
https://health.clevelandclinic.org/tommy-john-surgery-gaining-popularity

The people who do throw harder than ever after TJ is usually because they didn't put in the work to strengthen their arm prior to rehabbing the way they did while rehabbing.

“Pitchers should get Tommy John surgery as soon as possible, as they will be better and throw harder after the surgery.”
Even though a surprising 25% to 50% of amateur players, parents, and coaches believe this,13 it is not true. Indeed, MLB pitchers often show some improvement in performance upon return from Tommy John surgery.14 However such improvements for a professional or amateur pitcher are due to the surgeon fixing the problem followed by the pitcher working intensely with the physical therapist, athletic trainer, strength coach, and pitching coach. The time without pitching after surgery also helps the athlete’s body. Performance eventually decreases over time for MLB pitchers after Tommy John surgery (similar to the typical decrease over time for healthy MLB pitchers).14–16 It is also important to realize that 10% to 20% of pitchers never make it back to their previous level after Tommy John surgery.17,18

Maybe he's the target audience for Taylor Broadway's upcoming Fortnite stream.

My sons are 10 & 8, and play Fortnite but they've never gotten into watching streamers which is probably good. The YouTube videos are bad enough.

There's a thread on the main board about the sale of Worcester, but I figured I'd throw this in here since Diamond Baseball Holdings almost has the monopoly on Red Sox affiliates now, with the exception of Greenville.

The Worcester Red Sox are the 27th team under Diamond Baseball Holdings ownership, joining Triple-A’s Albuquerque Isotopes, Iowa Cubs, Fresno Grizzlies, Gwinnett Stripers, Memphis Redbirds, Norfolk Tides, Oklahoma City Dodgers, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and St. Paul Saints; Double-A’s Altoona Curve, Birmingham Barons, Midland RockHounds, Mississippi Braves, Portland Sea Dogs, Springfield Cardinals, Tulsa Drillers and Wichita Wind Surge; High-A’s Hickory Crawdads, Hudson Valley Renegades, Lansing Lugnuts, Rome Emperors, Salem Red Sox and Vancouver Canadians; and Single-A’s Augusta GreenJackets, Down East Wood Ducks and San Jose Giants in being operated by DBH. We could see a total of 50 licensed MiLB teams from DBH in the future; we also expect news of another acquisition in the very near future.

a rock and a hard place
I don't want to take the time to do it more scientifically, because I don't know an easier way to look at/tabulate the data than to go into the game on Baseball Savant, but for fun, let's take the 1st game of the season & the last game of the season...

1st game
73 pitches
39 sinkers (53.4%)
16 changeups (21.9%)
9 sweepers (12.7%)
9 4-seam fastballs (12.7%)
0 cutters (0%)

Last game
67 pitches
22 sweepers (32.8%)
18 sinkers (26.9%)
16 changeups (23.9%)
9 cutters (13.4%)
2 4-seam fastballs (3%)

So yeah...he seems to have added the cutter during the season & gone away from sinkers & 4-seamers in exchange for more sweepers & the cutter. Cool stuff.
many thanks, JM3

Chad Jennings has been dead to me since RHickeyGate, exacerbated by not knowing Bonaci played in AA (& was on the Reserve List by the time of the article).

Rafaela’s versatility opens possibilities at shortstop and second base, Mayer’s tremendous upside means Trevor Story could move back to second base as he ages, and in the meantime, the Red Sox have Valdez and David Hamilton (and perhaps soon, Nick Yorke, Chase Meidroth, and Brainer Bonaci) as mix-and-match possibilities at second. There are also less certain, bat-first options Blaze Jordan and Nathan Hickey to consider at first base and behind the plate, and even if those two are little more than right-handed bench options, they might fit well with Devers, Casas and Teel. The pieces fit, at least theoretically.

And every name mentioned above, except Bonaci, played at least in Double A this season. Even Bonaci needs Rule 5 protection and could be added to the 40-man this winter. These possibilities are not far away.

I started listening to this &...well, he hasn't changed my mind, yet. But the pod is still young.

Ronald Rosario, sometimes known as Rosey by his teammates, & a RoRo All-Star, spent most of the season catching for Greenville this season.

View: https://twitter.com/tpriddy/status/1704516963131695290

Rosey does not turn 21 until New Year's Day. No player younger than Rosario had more high-A PAs than Rosario's 247.

RoRo signed at 16 y/o out of Palo Negro, Venezuela for a bargain $50k on the 1st day of the 2019 signing period, July 2nd. Some people say the only reason Eddie Romero did not get the Red Sox GM job is that he would break the league after being 1 of 2 signing scouts (along with Alex Requena). RONALD was in Greenville's top 10 in the following categories:

Hits
Runs
Doubles
Triples
Swag
RBI
Awesomeness
Walks
Total bases
Catching stuff
HBP
Intentional walks (17% of his team's total)

In the past 90 days, The Rose Garden has a 1.117 OPS. & if there is one thing Ronnie hits better than righties, it's lefties.

Rosario threw out 30 guys trying to steal, while getting caught stealing 0 times himself... in fact Rosario has NEVER been caught stealing in his vaunted MiLB career.

After sharpening his already impressive skills during the COVID year, Ron straight dominated DSL competition in '21 to the tune of a .500/.600/.750 slash line for a whopping 1.350 OPS (260 wRC+). The Ro-minator sported a 4 to 1 walk to strikeout ratio. Based on information & belief he only didn't play even more due to "hurting other team's feelings" & "making opponents want to retire en masse".

After tearing up the DSL, it was only natural he would proceed on to the FCL for his age 19 season in '22. He took it easy, but still put up a well above average wRC+. Rosey led the FCL Sox in OPS by guys between 50 & 80 PAs, the most important demographic.

The Red Sox decided to move Ronald along slowly... taking the conservative route & having him start this past season in A-Ball. It did not take them long to realize that the 20 y/o Rosario had outgrown regular A-Ball & that he was ready for the highest of A-Ball. RO-RO had a 133 wRC+ in 72 PAs at the time of the promotion. Rosarito widened his demographic reach even further, leading the 26 to 155 PA range in OPS.

The Red Sox new CBO, Craig Breslowsario, made the difficult choice to leave Rosario off the 40-man for now, but wisely added him to the list to protect him from the MiLB Rule 5. SoxProspects was so enamored by this choice that he was the 1st, & maybe only, guy they mentioned as being added to the list.

Periodic SOSH contributor & pina colada connoisseur Ed Hand did his part in trying to avoid losing Rosario to the R5 draft this off season "ranking" Ronny 7th among the orgs catchers. Good looking out.

SoxProspects describes Rosario as follows:

Summation: Potential solid [redacted] player.
It goes without saying they mean this is his floor.

https://www.soxprospects.com/players/rosario-ronald.htm

Finally, RONALD ROSARIO is a CHAMPION, catching all 4 games in the playoffs for Greenville as they swept the way through, while calling immaculate game after immaculate game.

Rosario was 4-13 with a homer, a double, 3 walks & 4 RBI (1 in each game). He slashed .308/.438/.615 for a 1.053 OPS.

Here's the homer:

https://www.mlbdraftleague.com/video/ronald-rosario-s-solo-home-run?t=t428-default-vtp

Rosario caught all 36 innings, with his pitchers only allowing 8 runs, which is a 2.00 ERA.

It's only a matter of time until we see PLAYOFF ROSARIO continue to tear his way through the system.

Apologize in advance for all errors & ommissions of other awesome accomplishments. Did that on my phone at my son's football game during breaks.

It should say no Red Sox player who was younger had more High-A PAs. Obviously other org guys probably do.

Other than suggesting that Stephen Scott could play corner infield & formerly working for the Yankees, Jennings avoided angering me too much.

I think Chad Jennings is a very underrated beat writer. It was interesting to hear that the Athletic thought Rule 5 protection wasn’t that important though lol

I think he's a good interview & has pretty good connections, but his knowledge seems fairly surface level when it comes to the system.

I mostly prefer McCaffrey's stuff, & the "Nathan Hickey is a good right-handed bat" thing still kills me. & makes it pretty clear to me that the Athletic doesn't care about much of anything since they never corrected any of that stuff. So no surprise they don't think their target audience GAF about a long-form piece on the Rule 5 draft.

The good thing for me is that I don't have an editor so no one cares if I write long posts about things no one cares about lol

Re Chad- I like the guy but I do agree he seems to be more of a reporter than an analysis guy. I appreciate what he does for the Athletic but he's not someone that I'll talk to and be like "wow, he knows A LOT about this". Of people I've gotten to talk to since I started doing the podcasting, I've had that reaction with three people- Cundall, Hatfield, and Speier. That's it.

On a totally different note, I love that write up on Rosario. I feel like he's snuck under the radar a bit but there isn't really anyone else infringing on his playing time and last year he was able to put up decent numbers at High-A: - .261/.344/.377, 12 doubles, 3 homers, 33 RBI, 74 K/27 BB, 247 PA. For a catcher, that'll do fine. Still just 20. Will have to watch if he's still able to draw walks once the pitching gets a little more advanced. Lira, Brannon, and Johanfran are more exciting but they're decisively a full level behind him right now.

Fun fact- I'm currently in an APBA league that JJ Cooper of Baseball America was a founding member of. His college roommate is the commissioner and someone I've known since I was 9. Really good guy. Hope to get JJ to come on some day.

Yeah, that's a good list. I find myself audibly expressing my displeasure with the SP guys when they mess something up on the pod, but I think that's only because I hold them to such a high standard because of all the great work they put out.

Yeah, the random # generator did pretty well for me. Would be tough to do a decent hype piece on a good chunk of people due to lack of information & data.

I think if Brannon stayed healthy he is probably the A+ starter by now, even though he doesn't turn 20 until May & has very little proof of concept. But Rosario having an exactly average (100 wRC+) hitting season for Greenville at 20 in his 1st real season of professional baseball is impressive (he only had 71 PAs total in his 1st 2 years in the system, which I conveniently left out cuz HYPE).

I have big concerns about Enderso Lira both offensively & defensively, and I'm not really sure I understand the hype.

In '22 in FCL he was only 18, but a 25 wRC+ in 71 PAs is crazy. He followed that up with a not quite as bad, but still concerningly bad 59 wRC+ in 238 PAs. As I mentioned yesterday, he had the 2nd worst walk rate in the system this year. He slashed an anemic .238/.269/.287 (.556 OPS).

Defensively, he wasn't much better:

(#78) Enderso Lira (A): 495.2 innings, 117 steals, 43 caught stealing (27%), 16 errors, 11 PB (18 IPEP)

The IPEP was as bad as anyone in the system who caught at least like 150 innings. It's a made up stat... but it illustrates that he is certainly not excelling back there, yet.

He does seem to have a fairly strong arm to throw out 27% while throwing the ball all over the place. & he got the 2nd largest bonus in the 2021 IFA class at $850k, behind only Bleis.

I love JOHANFRAN, but agree that he certainly needs to start next year in Salem.
