Less than two weeks left, most jobs have been set and safe the whole spring, assuming they stay healthy of course. The fringe spots are part prediction and part what I hope for, heh.

C-Wells/Trevino
1B-Rizzo
2B-Torres
SS-Volpe
3B-LeMahieu
LF-Verdugo/Stanton
CF-Judge/Grisham
RF-Soto/Judge
DH-Stanton/Soto

That's 11 of the 13 spots, the platoon spots are listed against RHP first. Cabrera will also get a spot, he can play everywhere competently even if he can't hit, and the other should go to an infielder but as no one has really emerged for that spot in Yankee camp, I think it will be someone in another organization currently. For now I guess I'll give it to Greg Allen as a pinch-runner.

Cortes
Rodon
Stroman
Schmidt
Will Warren

Weaver
Gil
Burdi
Gonzalez
Ferguson
Hamilton
Loaisiga
Holmes

Warren, Burdi and Allen will need 40 man spots, but NY can easily make space, starting with Peraza to the 60 day. Rortvedt and Jahmai Jones are out of options if they don't make the team and will need to be dumped/moved. Cole may be ready before that (60 days from Opening Day) so they may not want to put him on the 60 day, that will give us an early clue of what NY is really expecting there.

Cashman said a few words today and from what I can tell on Twitter/X, Cashman said that Cole was a candidate to move to the 60-day IL if they need the spot.

After Warren's lousy outing just now (admittedly not helped by his defense), I'm sending him back to AAA to start the season, moving Gil up to the rotation, and putting another reliever in there, maybe Poteet or Dennis Santana.

I kind of like Gil in the high leverage Betances/Green/King role anyway
Yeah I didn't realize how low his professional innings have been:

Luis Gil, innings by year:

2015: 23.1
2016: 0
2017: 41.2
2018: 46
2019: 96
2020: 0
2021: 108.2
2022: 25.2
2023: 4

Yeah, questionable for Opening Day.

NY is very thin at SS/3B, basically it is Volpe, DJ, and Peraza, and the latter two are hurt now. Wonder if they will give Vivas a chance if DJ isn't ready in time? They still need a backup SS though, think we'll see at least one minor trade to bring in someone, if not two.

Boras mouthpiece Heyman reporting that the Yankees are in contact with Boras regarding Montgomery. In the unlikely event that happens, wonder if that means Warren is sent to AAA and Gil given the King role.

Yeah, I don't buy that, but at least with Montgomery it would just be money (including a 110 percent tax on his whole salary), no draft penalties.

Rumors that Gil has won the 5th SP spot, so that means another reliever makes the team. Beeter for length maybe? Warren would then start the season in AAA to stay stretched out.

OK, updating this, still some spots open (last reliever, last bench spot):

C-Wells/Trevino
1B-Rizzo
2B-Torres
SS-Volpe
3B-LeMahieu
LF-Verdugo/Stanton
CF-Judge/Grisham
RF-Soto/Judge
DH-Stanton/Soto

That's 11 guys, Cabrera (likely opening day 3B) is the 12th, and the 13th needs to be someone who can play SS/3B (Elvis Andrus?). If they put DJ on the 10 day IL to start the season to be safe, then they have more flexibility for someone like Jahmai Jones or even Oscar Gonzalez.

Cortes
Rodon
Stroman
Schmidt
Gil

Weaver
??? (Beeter?)
Burdi
Gonzalez
Ferguson
Hamilton
Loaisiga
Holmes

I still can't believe they got ANYTHING for Gallo. It'd be truly hilarious if Beeter ends up being good.

Not that there was ever much doubt, but Burdi makes the team also, and DJ will start the season on the IL.

NY sent a bunch more guys down and is actually down to 26 players currently, but those 26 include both Rortvedt as a 3rd catcher and Jones as a 2B/LF (both are out of options), and no one on the roster to back up either SS or 3B (with DJ and Peraza on the IL).

More moves coming before Thursday, I'm assuming.

“We got two more spots to fill,” Aaron Boone said Monday before the Yankees wrapped up their two-game series in Mexico City. “The final iteration isn’t done. We’ll see.”

The Yankees brought Jahmai Jones and Ben Rortvedt with them to Houston, but without the guarantee they would be on the Opening Day roster.

Boone said the Yankees are most comfortable with Jones at second base and left field and could play him at third base if they were in a pinch, but it did not sound optimal.

OK, still not sure NY is done with moves (Boone was noncommittal earlier today), but here's where we are:|

C-Wells/Trevino
1B-Rizzo
2B-Torres
SS-Volpe
3B-Berti/Cabrera
LF-Verdugo/Stanton
CF-Judge/Grisham
RF-Soto/Judge
DH-Stanton/Soto

That is 12 guys, Jahmai Jones is the 13th for now, and he has no options. They could just keep him until LeMahieu is ready to come back and try to sneak him through waivers then.

Cortes
Rodon
Stroman
Schmidt
Gil

Weaver
Beeter
Burdi
Gonzalez
Ferguson
Hamilton
Loaisiga
Holmes

IL:

Hitters: LeMahieu, Dominguez, Peraza

Pitchers: Cole, Effross, Kahnle, Trivino

They need to make a 40 man move for Burdi still, someone to the 60 day IL. McKinley Moore is a winter waiver pickup who did not pitch at all this spring but I think needs to go on the major league IL, so that seems like an easy candidate.

NY picks up Taylor Trammell and DFAs Kevin Smith. Trammell is out of options and superficially reminds me of Estevan Florial, born 2 months apart in 1997 (both are 26), both out of options without getting much of a chance in MLB, both were top-100 prospects when they were much younger but the bloom has come off the rose. I think this is yet another guy who NY is trying to claim, then DFA and hope no one else claims so they can build their AAA depth (Jeter Downs, Oscar Gonzalez, etc).

They should probably DFA Jahmai Jones also and promote Caleb Durbin, but maybe they don't want to clog that 40 man spot yet with LeMahieu probably back next week sometime.
