Nemec has pulled a couple of Girouds. Has there been a corner all game? And where is David luis?

Edit: Villa not Luiz. I need a break.

Mediocre players in leagues like the 2.Bundesliga will also be mediocre players in MLS, for the most part.

This game got interesting all of a sudden.  Nice curler by Mix, and then Orlando is denied a PK shout.  Higuita becomes the third OCSC player to receive a yellow for diving.  Lol.

Orlando deserves a goal at this point, and would have one if Carlos Rivas were not eternally offside.  Rochez coming on, who scored a boatload of goals in Honduras as a teenager.  Interesting to finally see him.

Well, it didn't take long for Collin to get his first red card of the year.  Brutal challenge.

Can anyone give me a quick primer on the Revs, is there anyone that I should really focus on.

The Revs are missing their two best players, Jermaine Jones and Lee Nguyen.

To keep an eye on, I would say look to how well the centerbacks, Farrell and Goncalves, play together. Farrell was the right back last year and I think a lot of the Revs' success this year will hinge on how well he transitions to centerback.

Juan Agudelo is also making his first start back in MLS since his failed stint in Europe, so I'm looking forward to seeing him again at striker.

Watching my first Revs game. Have really wanted to get into soccer since the World Cup but I started with Europe and the time difference drives me mad. Hoping MLS is a little easier to get invested in.

Osvaldo Alonso's absence for Seattle makes me feel a bit better about our chances here.  Alonso/Pineda vs. Caldwell/Dorman would have been bad news.

California. Duh.
I've got to say, it's really impressive seeing the Sounders support up close. Did plenty of pre-gaming today, and it seemed like everyone in town was wearing the colors. We did the march to the stadium along with a few thousand others, and 10 minutes in, the crowd noise hasn't let up.

Note to Revs - please mark Chad Marshall on free kicks.  Thanks.

Dempsey draws a fairly soft, but legit PK, takes it, and converts.

Revs not quite dangerous enough, but are seeing a lot of the ball.  Martins is really scary on the counter.

Seattle makes the mistake of giving Rowe space near the top of the box, but his blast is tipped wide by Frei, great save.

A few minutes later, Sounders get the Revs on the break, Martins header off of a Mears cross.  Damn.  Revs are playing better than a team losing 2-0.

Looks like Bunbury separated his shoulder

Still no injury update on Bunbury that I can find.  All of a sudden we have Jones, Nguyen, Bunbury injured with Davies less than 100% (calf tightness).  Hopefully the team rebounds against NYCFC this weekend.  Road games against expansion teams are points that shouldn't be dropped.

--

The TV numbers from the weekend are rolling in and they're looking good.  The ORL/NYC game on ESPN2 got >500k, which is epic for any MLS game that's not the All-Star game or MLS Cup.  Both FS1 games (KC/NYRB, NE/SEA) came in >250k.  When stacked up to NBCSN's 38 games last year, they'd rank #4 and #2 respectively.  UniMás got around 350k for the Friday season opener.  VAN/TOR was the highest rated game in Canada ever on TSN.  Philly's game broke their local TV ratings record (too bad it was brutal).

Early days, but this is promising stuff.  If the league can make a significant step forward in ratings over the course of the current contracts, MLS will be (relatively speaking) awash in TV money next time around, and that's when possibilities really open up.

Can someone tell me why I shouldn't hate watching Kelyn Rowe? He seems like such a baby on the pitch, and I don't know what it is but there's something about him that just rubs me the wrong way. Am I way off-base in feeling like he does a lot of ball-watching when not directly involved in play? I want to be wrong, because I know he's young and comes from a good pedigree and has remarkable stretches of brilliant touches and passes. Am I just over-focusing on the negatives and not appreciating the positives?

Minnesota expansion news

Sources say that MLS has provided written support for United’s efforts in building a stadium in downtown Minneapolis, while the team has moved aggressively in recent weeks to make that vision a reality. Northern Pitch has also confirmed that team owner Dr. Bill McGuire recently secured an option to purchase a property on Royalston Avenue, adjacent to the Minneapolis Farmers Market and near Target Field, which has long been speculated to be the future stadium site. Multiple sources suggest an announcement of an agreement to bring United into MLS could come within the next month. A representative from Minnesota United declined to comment on this report.

Great news if true.  I'm glad the Minnesota United group appears to beating out the Vikings.  (1) MNU has an existing fanbase that is doing well (averaged 8k in 2014), and changing things up would only serve to alienate their core. (2) If the Vikings won, we'd have another NFL-stadium-on-turf situation - something MLS could do without.

Minneapolis has the market size, the corporate presence, and the ownership money (two separate group worth!).  They just need a stadium, and it's a no-brainer.

Rowe is a weird combination of smooth/technical, yet still is somehow alarmingly sloppy.  I think that's what pisses people off about him - it feels like he should be more productive than he actually is.  I'm hoping that a Fagundez will return to form and force Rowe to tighten up his game to stay in the XI, but Nguyen's injury and now Bunbury's injury will take the pressure off for now.

I think with moderate improvements in speed of thought and overall focus, Rowe could be tremendous in this league.  But that's sort of like saying a pitcher would be so much better if he shaved 1.0 BB/9.  Seems surmountable, but doesn't happen as often as you'd think.

It's the hipster bun. :D

For what its worth, I thought Rowe played better than Fagundez on Sunday. I too wish he were more consistent, but every so often he'll do something like this and remind everyone how much talent he really has.

Okoli to the starting 11?

I'd say him or Neumann are the logical picks. I don't know to what extent they see Okoli as a winger, but he seems the more like-for-like replacement for Bunbury.

So, the Sounders' experiment putting Brad Evans at center back is off to a swimming start. Got burned three times last night, including once when San Jose only had 10 men on the field and the Sounders were pushing for the equalizer.

To make matters worse, new defender Tyrone Mears has a slight tear in his hamstring. And the Earthquakes won their first match since last August. Good times.

Revs line-up for NYCFC: Shuttleworth; Alston, Farrell, Goncalves, Tierney; Dorman, Kobayashi; Fagundez, Nguyen, Rowe; Agudelo

Nguyen is a huge boost coming in for the injured Bunbury, glad to have him back.

NYCFC: Saunders; Brovsky, Williams, Wingert, Hernandez; Jacobson, Diskerud, Grabavoy, Velasquez; Villa, Nemec

Old friend Patrick Mullins is on the bench for New York. Let's get NYCFC off to a terrible start at the Toilet.

Not sure if its the camera angle or the field itself, but the field looks very narrow to me too. Its made for a very fast paced game so far.

A smaller field will also lead to more physical play, which isn't the Revs' strength without Jones.

Seems to be going just as well as Andrew Farrell at center back

Revs are missing Bunbury a bit- they need someone besides Agudelo to get on the end of these crosses. Wouldn't be surprised to see Okoli at some point if they can't break through.

It was shamefully easy for NYC to get in behind the Revs defense.  The Farrell at CB experiment is not off to a good start - his instincts just aren't right and he's not very good in the air.  He is thinking the game way, way too slow right now.  The Revs FO left the team with basically no alternative, so pray that this works out.  Otherwise we're going to be seeing a lot of Darrius Barnes or, possibly, London Woodberry.

Goncalves needs to be a hero this season, but I'm skeptical that he'll recapture his 2013 form.  For example, a slightly slow reaction to Khiry Shelton's run is what put him in position to make the DOGSO foul in the first place.

The Revs could have easily scored three, but NYCFC could have easily scored four.

Jermaine Jones will cover a lot of sins, but our non-JJ defensive core options (CBs, Caldwell, Kobayashi, Dorman) are very ordinary.  Good MLS teams have more depth now and there isn't an excuse for not signing a solid CB to give the team a third reasonable option in the foreseeable event that Farrell-at-CB doesn't work out.  (I am in favor of the experiment and think it should be given more time, but it's entirely possible that it will fail.)  It is frustrating to see the Revs build another good core but neglect to make the moves necessary to push the team over the top.

Expansion news:

“We are in advanced discussions with Bill McGuire and his partners in Minnesota to bring a Major League Soccer expansion club to the Twin Cities and are particularly excited about their plans for a new soccer-specific stadium that will serve as the club’s home,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement released by the club. “We remain on track to announce the next MLS expansion market in the next 30-45 days, though no specific date for an announcement has been set.”

MLS confirms that Minnesota United is winning and the Minnesota Vikings are losing.

However, on Monday, Garber stated that the league will evaluate its expansion plans.

“Over the course of 2015, we plan to evaluate potential expansion beyond 24 clubs,” he said.

No surprise there.
