Hembree probably isn't available tomorrow anyway. Can he be optioned and then just recalled after Owens pitches?

If ERod doesn't get put on the DL, it seems the only feasible options are Taz to DL or Abad DFA. Unless they are going to try to go with 9 non-catcher position players and send Marrero down. September 1 is almost here.

Edit: Actually, they need Marrero's spot for Young.

Wright won't be coming off the DL for Tuesday's start, as previously thought. If EdRod is okay, he can just pitch then

edit: doesn't sound like it

Seems like thinly veiled criticism of ERod from Farrell.
I think that's a stretch. Probably a stretch by PeteAbe if he is implying something unsaid. I think it's far more likely that we should read JF's words on face value.

My guess is that Marrero goes to Pawtucket, Owens takes that spot for Sunday then goes back down to open the spot for Young on Monday. It only short-hands the bench for Sunday.

If ERod isn't ready to pitch on Tuesday, they should consider the 15-day retroactive to when he last pitched, as he probably wouldn't have another chance to start until then anyway.

This makes sense. I would also like to see them DL Tazawa and promote Kelly for Sunday's game. Kelly has been excellent in August in AAA working from the bullpen. I would give him another chance.

Also if I might add to what's posted here, it's not as if the Sox are in dire straights if Rodriquez doesn't pitch on Tues. Buchholz is already in that slot, has been pitching better of late and they're playing Tampa. Why move him and screw with his routine just when he seems to be making progress. Owens is pitching today, why not slot Rodriguez back in when his regular turn comes around again if he's ready to go? .

I don't follow the Pawsox closely. Is this decision driven by 40-man roster considerations, etc., or do we really have no one who's a better bet than Owens to deliver five innings of passable pitching today?

I've always been more bullish than most on Owens, and I still am, but I can't say I'm optimistic about his performance today, and getting shelled in The Show today won't help his long-term development. I wish we had a credible minor league veteran who could take the ball today instead.

This seems the prudent thing to do, especially if EdRo is a guy who needs to feel absolutely "normal" to pitch without changing his delivery. Give him as much time as you can so that he feels right and can go out and do his thing. I think what Farrell said was basically, they can't have him pitch if he is worried about re-injuring himself. That's the "frame of mind" thing. I think it was a reference to EdRo needing to get his head right about the hamstring, as opposed to getting the actual hamstring right. And I'll say it: the guy seems a little squirrelly when it comes to injury.

It's a spot start and he's going right back to Pawtucket after the game. No reason to add a new guy to the 40-man just for that, though I don't know that there is a candidate in Pawtucket or Portland who's better anyway. I'd guess that it's Owens simply because it's his turn in the rotation (well, last night was but they scratched him). Elias pitched Thursday so he'd be on short rest. Johnson pitched Wednesday so he's rested but it seems they're avoiding him as he works back from the anxiety problems.

I hope Owens takes encouragement from the big ballpark in Detroit and has the confidence not to nibble today.

Well, he didn't just nibble and walk a bunch of guys, they also pounded him into sawdust when he did get the ball over the plate.

Owens is uniformly terrible, and probably shouldn't be considered part of the future at this point. I'd be happy not seeing him in a Boston uniform again. He was walking almost 6 per 9 in AAA this year, and he's walking 9 1/2 per 9 in his brief Boston stint as well. Until he gets a handle on that he's got no chance of helping this organization. His stuff isn't good enough to overcome his lack of control.

I disagree. His "stuff" is excellent, his control is terrible, and has almost zero command within the strike zone. I believe it's a big part of the reason that he had success in the minors so readily as players' tend not to have the plate discipline they do in the majors. He's also only just turned 24 and 6'6. Tall lefties are notorious for taking extra time to put it together. You don't give up on a guy with his kind of stuff.

He shouldn't be in the 25 man roster, but he's definitely not uniformly terrible.

His control has been terrible all year after seeming to improve in 2014 and 2015 3.6 bb/9 vs 4.4 at lower levels before that. This year he's been worse than ever with 5.5 bb/9. His performance today was exactly what you'd predict from his season thus far. It really didn't make sense to bring him back to the big leagues. I'm much higher than most on him, he's got stuff that makes batters miss but it's just not the year for him. If he keeps walking this many batters it never will be. I'm also not convinced it's better hitters, his control is much worse in AAA too.

his lanky body + left handedness lets him have some success in AAA, but he's had no MLB success. Looking like a AAAA filler player at this point that we should have sold high on.

Andrew Miller says hi.
Are you nuts? Andrew Miller throws high 90s. Owens can't
break 90 and stay in the zone.

He needs to develop pristine command of his fastball to have any chance. That will only happen is he throws 200 inning a year for the next 2 years---in Pawtucket.

The Miller comp might have some validity if they move Owens to the pen and tell him to throw as hard as he can. Miller didn't throw high 90s as a starter IIRC; Owens has always topped out around 91.

Attempting to improve command at the same time as throw as hard as possible doesn't sound like a recipe for success to me.
No amount of willpower is going to turn Owens into Miller just because of body type and handedness.

You can't have excellent stuff with an average at best fastball and an inconsistent curve. His only plus pitch is his changeup, and he doesn't throw it for strikes.

I gave up on the game after Detroit scored 5 to watch a tape of the Pats-Bears games, but up until then, Owens fastball was much better than average despite the so-so velocity. Hitters were clearly having trouble picking it up ALA Koji. And despite the 3 run dinger that inning, his change is usually outstanding. So his future really lies in his ability to improve his 3rd pitch (curve) and control. I wouldn't give up on him yet.

I hope the Sox Brass seriously consider shifting him to a bullpen role. At this point he seems like he simply won't be able to make it as a starter.
Who knows? For one inning he could add 3-5 extra mph onto his fastball and harness some control for short stints.
Starting in '17 I'd push him that direction with a bit of a career ultimatum

I disagree. He has 2 option years remaining. Have him throw 200 innings as a starter for those 2 years at Pawrucket and see where you are. Transitioning the bullpen can happen at any time. And for next year they can easily sign a middle reliever who is a better bet than Owens.

I would imagine he'll get some relief opportunities in September. It will be interesting to see what he does with them. Soxprospects.com says he has three options left. I'm not sure how that's possible, but he only needs one to stick around all next year.

Yep. No rush, he's not exactly banging the door down and as Ras mentions, he can get a few relief opportunities in September if warranted.

Jamie Moyer was tall?
Wow.

6', lanky--I mean, you got the point of my post, right? It wasn't dependent on a Universal Truth of Tallness. Patterns develop in people's heads, 6' doesn't exactly buck the trend, Moyer feels like he fits the trend, goes in the "pattern" bin, pattern survives. I even called it a "stretch," which you could argue this is baked into. This is some like, black belt level pedantry.

In all sincerity--was there any chance you got any value out of the time spent writing the question?
