Happy for him, just wish it was on different terms. At least his name is on the Cup, and he’ll go down as one of the greatest role models in sports as well.

Marchand should be the choice for the C but given his, er antics I suspect they'll give it to McAvoy.
He's worn an A for several years and has done a good job of keeping his, ahem, nose out of trouble for like 5 years now (save 1 bogus suspension). He's cut the shit out, I don't recall anything remotely close to objectionable this year.

I think it'll be him unless they want a younger guy who projects to have more longevity like McAvoy.

Yeah, it'll be Mac. Marchand is also long in the tooth himself. Mac is likely the next guy who plays his whole career here and has shown some leadership skills as well.

I'm so sad

My favorite player ever. His skill set changed everything about how I look at the game of hockey and how I value players. It has helped me appreciate players like McAvoy so much more. He will be sorely missed. This sucks.

I'll never forget him playing the '13 SCF with a punctured lung. A PUNCTURED LUNG!!!!!! If that doesn't tell you all you need to know about the toughness and dedication to his teammates, I don't know what else you need to know about him.

While I totally get it and I am happy for Bergeron and his family, this is really sad as a fan. He’s easily my favorite Bruin and I will really miss watching him play.

As sad as it is, this is the right choice for him and his family. I wish him nothing but the best. I will be telling stories to my kids and grandkids about how he played the game "the right way" until I die.

He is an example of not only being a great hockey player, but a great person. I will miss him playing in the black and gold terribly, but this is the right choice and I appreciate all the joy he gave me.

I need to go for a walk and stare at the sky for a bit and ponder my existence.

Can anyone recall another elite player as universally respected as Bergeron? In any sport? I mean has anyone, anywhere, ever said a bad word about him?

Hank Aaron came close after he retired, but unfortunately he got so much hate mail for breaking the HR record that he doesn't fall into this category.

I grew up in an era with Pedro, Ortiz, Pierce, and Brady but Bergeron was always easily my favorite athlete of all time. Incredible player and by all accounts a better human.

I was lucky enough to sit in the third row at a game 10 or so years ago. I focused on him every time he was on the ice and I feel like I went to hockey school. His anticipation and knack for being in the right place was unbelievable.

I might end up paying an irresponsible amount of money to attend the game when they retire his number. Fuck this is a sad day.

Thank you Bergy for everything. The only Bruin that everyone who hates the Bruins & Boston Sports says they like & respect.

Well there's several great gentleman of the game like Federer, Gehrig or Christie Mathewson and then there are the true saints like Arthur Ashe and Jackie Robinson.

Now, for sure, but the stink from that incident remains all over the front office. And Patrice seems like enough of a mensch that this could make a difference.
Most of the players probably only care if they have to play with him. If not, they probably don't think about it. Not sure why you keep trying to suggest this is a thing.

California. Duh.
Knew it was probably coming, but still bummed.

Everything you want from your superstar and captain. A guy that made you proud he was representing you. Enjoy your retirement, Patrice. You have earned it.

It’s not only the sport with the most injury variance, it’s the only sport where they change the rules going into the playoffs to allow more contact, thereby creating more injuries. And that’s even before considering goaltending luck, officiating, and puck bounces. So many lucky breaks have to go a teams way to win a cup.

Pedro for me as well but yeah that's about it.

Sad but happy day. Thankful for the privilege of being able to watch my favorite athlete of all time play for 20 years. The journey matters more than the destination.
Not to muddy the thread, but no Bobby Orr? I'm sorry but Orr belongs on Mt. Rushmore before Bergy does No Russell either?

It's easy to overlook, but he announced this through the Bruins website. He didn't use any of the social media sites or the Player's Tribune to draw any more attention to himself than was necessary. Team first until the end.
