Go f*ck yourself
No? I'm a Packers fan and he really sucked for the Pack. If he shows up in the Patriots defense and performs I'm really going to be convinced Mike McCarthy and Capers need to go.
If he shows up in the Patriots defense, I'm going to be convinced it's time for Bill and Matt to go.

The cradle of the game.
He'll need to pick up some of the nuances of this year's offense, but he'll know generally what is going on, plus he'll be familiar with most of the people he's playing with.
He will saunter his widebody downfield 6 yards, turn around, catch the football, fall forward and move the sticks. He will do this over and over. A modern-day Chief for our Cuckoo’s Nest.

Did you see him bust out of Green Bay?

Injury maybe a contributing factor to his catch rate dropping from 75% to 63% this year, and his Yards / Target also significantly dropping. If your shoulder hurts, how hard is it to get your hands up for quick throws?

How was Marty used in GB this year? I.e, what kinds of routes?

Would putting him IR at this point in the season render him ineligible for the playoffs? Is there some feasible way to see if he can spend the rest of the regular season trying to recover, rehab, and be in better shape for the playoffs, without causing roster management issues?

Well, he's ON the roster. So absent other injuries they think they can carry him.

Cannot put on IR now and get him back for postseason.

Does anyone know when the team is flying to Denver? And also is Marty with the team yet?
Practice is in about an hour. We'll see who's there.

I imagine they're flying out later today or tomorrow morning.

Thanks. Not as versed on the new IR rules. Several weeks on the inactive list, with eye towards playoff readiness seems to be a realistic course of action if these reports about his shoulder are fully accurate. Unless rest and recovery don't really apply to those injuries. And it's simply a pain management/tolerance issue until he gets them surgically corrected.

So, if the Packers file a grievance to recoup $4.2MM in signing bonus dollars, they receive the cash, but the Patriots receive the cap credit? Did I read that correctly on Twitter last night or am I dreaming happy thoughts?

I’m pretty sure if Green Bay gets the money back, there is no cap hit at all for that amount. It’s as if the transaction never occurred.

So, the whole "failure to disclose" thing in Green Bay....are people saying he had this when he showed up? That it happened this season and he never said anything until just a few days ago?

From Miguel on Twitter :

Bennett is due $13M in 2018 and in 2019 but none of it is guaranteed. As @TexansCap pointed out yesterday if the Packers file a grievance and win the Pats will get the credit on the cap. Grandmaster chess move by Pats.

Is he referring to the recouped signing bonus?

Some good insight from Green Bay on everything that led up to this:

The circumstances under which Bennett parts ways with the Packers are fishy.

Is it a coincidence that the 30-year-old Bennett’s injury was reported to the team three days after he said this on Instagram: "After conversations with my family I'm pretty sure these next 8 games will be the conclusion of my NFL career. To everyone who has poured themselves and time into my life and career. These next games are for you. Thank you."

Three days later, after the players had returned from their bye week, Bennett declined to elaborate on his decision with reporters in the locker room.

On that same day, Bennett reported to the Packers that he had a shoulder injury. On Nov. 2, he was added to the injury report and did not practice the rest of the week.

Is it a coincidence that the shoulder injury popped up two weeks after he saw his chances for a second straight Super Bowl vanish with the crack of Rodgers’ right collarbone on the U.S. Bank Stadium turf in Minnesota?

The Packers listed him as doubtful on the injury report Saturday and coach Mike McCarthy said Bennett was “still taking a visit or two,” intimating that the tight end was seeking a second opinion, which the team must pay for under terms of the CBA.

Bennett was not seen on the sidelines Monday night against the Detroit Lions.

Early Wednesday afternoon, McCarthy said in his news conference that Bennett had met with the doctors Tuesday and “there’s a number of opinions that he’s working through.” Later in the day, he was cut.

The only thing that could have caused the Packers to do that was if Bennett decided he wanted to have season-ending surgery. Given he had not been on the injury report all season, the Packers probably saw it as a ploy to either get cut so he could play for a contender or collect pay while on injured reserve.
On the "undisclosed injury" aspect of this:

On the other hand, how did the Packers not know about this shoulder condition? Sources said Bennett has had trouble with his shoulder for several seasons, including last year with the New England Patriots.

Did they just miss the diagnosis? Maybe it wasn’t bothering Bennett when he reported for offseason workouts and he didn’t think it was necessary to report it since he had missed only five games over the past five seasons, all due to a rib injury.

But it’s surprising the Packers didn’t know anything about it given all the medical reports that are shared around the NFL.
It goes on to talk a bit about the contributions he did make to the team:

Bennett contributed heavily to the statement the Packers players’ released asking fans to link arms in the stadium. The players have linked arms on the sideline every game since Week 4.

The only place where Bennett really had an impact with the Packers was with his blocking. He is one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL and had a considerable impact on the success rookie running back Aaron Jones had in the first half of the season.

Martellus Bennett, who arrived in NE with a torn rotator cuff, passed his physical and was at practice. He didn’t practice for 2 weeks in GB

Easier to play through pain if you are doing it for a chance to win a Super Bowl?
Brady let him sleep in his compression pj's last night.

There are degrees of damage for a rotator cuff, right? This could be a minor tear that is uncomfortable to play with. Once Rodgers went down in GB it wasn't worth playing with. Now on the Pats he can play through it. You have to assume the Pats talked with Bennett's agent when he hit waivers to get the full scoop.

If I’m reading this correctly, he may have the winning SB catch while the Pack win their grievance with him and we get a $4m cap credit in the process?
Those reactions would be fun.

Will let DRS chime in but yes there are degrees to rotator cuff injuries and a lot of times its rest and rehab. Glad to hear he is practicing.

What are the odds of him hurting his shoulder even more and having this be a lingering issue the rest of his life? Just let the man get surgery and retire and move on to the relative safety of the broadcast booth (or anything not football-related).

Meh, no one is forcing him to play. If he wants to get surgery now, he will.

So is your view on concussions "meh", too, since no one is forcing them to play? Sometimes it's best to take the choice out of the hands of someone with a overactive competitive drive. I just don't see how any of the upside in this transaction would be on Bennett's side.

There are various levels of having a torn rotator cuff. I had one for a decade. In fact, and DRS can correct me if I'm wrong, but torn rotator cuff isn't really a specific diagnosis, as the rotator cuff refers to a bunch of things in the shoulder. Like I had a tear in my supraspinitis.

Not that either are good as you age, but there's a large difference between a torn rotator cuff and concussions.. Rotator cuff injuries aren't going to lead to memory loss and brain damage.

Good point. Not sure if @profootballdoc is popular amongst you all, I see that you have your SOS version of him here, but he has a pretty good write up on it. Doesn't get too technical, but there are definitely varying degrees of a "torn" rotator cuff. Basically, his thought is that it comes down to Marty's pain tolerance more than functionality.

This article makes things even weirder: https://sports.yahoo.com/martellus-bennett-wanted-shoulder-surgery-203304936.html

In a series of posts to Instagram Live, Bennett took issue with the Packers’ claim and with the care he received from team doctor Patrick McKenzie.

Bennett wrote that the team examined his shoulder when he signed and cleared it and that things got worse as the season went along. He said he circled his shoulder “pretty much” every week when given a body evaluation sheet by the team and that the pain got worse when he stopped taking anti-inflammatories during the bye in Week Eight. Upon returning to the team, he asked for an evaluation “and that’s when we found out it was really f–ed up.”

“Dr. McKenzie didn’t make [me] feel safe and was pushing to play which I thought was weird,” Bennett wrote. “Not that he was trying to get me to play thru it but the way he was saying things. I didn’t trust him. So I got three other opinions from doctors who all said I need to get it fixed. So I decided to do that. And they decided to waive me with some bulls–t excuse.”

Bennett reportedly has a torn rotator cuff, but was at Patriots practice and there’s no sign that he failed a physical with the team or is set to have surgery. He did not discuss that apparent change of heart, which may be as simple as deciding to play through an injury on an offense with Tom Brady rather than one with Brett Hundley.
So, according to him, he wanted surgery and the Packers made him play through it, but then waived him because he was refusing to play without first having surgery, and now that he's on the Patriots he suddenly doesn't want surgery anymore?

Bennett signed with Green Bay the Super Bowl Contender in order to catch passes thrown by the only QB whose name can be uttered in the same sentence as Tom Brady.

One Rodgers went down, the Packers turned into one of the worst team in the league. Bennett appears to have had no interest in playing hurt so the Pack can go 7-9 instead of 6-10.

"[Packers Team Doctor] Dr. McKenzie didn't make [me] feel safe and was pushing to play, which I thought was weird. Not that he was trying to get me to play thru it but the way he was saying things. I didn't trust him. So I got 3 other opinions from doctors who all said I need to get it fixed. So I decided to do that. And they decided to waive me the some bull---- excuse. Failure [to] disclose.
Good for him. The NFL will always screw a player to save a dime. Good for us, if he decided to manage the injury and help the Pats down the stretch.

Trying to wrap my head around this with no sleep and here’s what I’ve got:

1) our black unicorn is one unique creature - he’s a bit unpredictable and definitely marches to the beat of his own drum.
2) he is clearly upset about how the Packers handled the situation
3) last year he mentioned that he wanted to make some money on this contract

So you have a moody guy who is having a difficult year production and health wise. He mentions frustration and retirement. He’s cut and now thinks about money and he also has a new stimulus - his anger over the situation. And he could easily go somewhere else with it.
There are degrees of seriously considering something. You can toy around with an idea a lot but know deep down it’s not the right option. I’m no armchair psychologist but the point is here the information is so imperfect that until we have the 2017 Patriots SB special and watch that speculation over it is amusing but not that useful. Nothing wrong with amusing. As long as we know it is just speculation.

It would be nice to have another receiving option this weekend and going forward with the WR depth at 3 + Gronk.

The timeline lines up closely to the Rodgers injury. He says he had it examined after the Cowboys game, then spent “a fewdays contemplating” surgery or playing through it.

The Rodgers injury happened the week after the Cowboys game. Bennett vs. Green Bay reached a boiling point right around the time Rodgers went down.

The fact that so many seemed convinced that the Pats are somehow "cheating" again make this already joyful signing 10x better.
Remember when the Pats got Blount to walk off the field in Pittsburgh? And Pittsburgh cut him and he signed with New England? And then he gained more yards in 5 games with the Pats than he did in 11 with the Steelers? And then he gained 148 yards in the AFCCG and the Steelers were at home because their leading rusher in their playoff game was Ben Roethlisberger with 16 yards? And then the Patriots won the Super Bowl?

I mean, it's a classic move.

Edit: Pedro said he had a torn rotator cuff in September 2001 and did OK the next couple of years.

If he can manage the pain and still be functional on the field, he’s not going to do any irreparable damage to his shoulder that couldn’t be fixed by off-season surgery
