Worth noting that I think they value Duggar's understanding of the team culture, particularly as they transition from Bill to Mayo. So when we talk about what we might be paying him and how that matches up with his on-field production, we should also probably factor that in as well.

He also had the green dot last year and called out the plays, coverages, etc. taking over from McCourty. That role likely means something to them.

Thinking about this some more, perhaps the team offers a 4 year deal at, say, $9M per year and guarantee $24-27M. Spread some value through the bonus system so that he is cuttable after year 2 or 3 with smaller cap hits. Duggar really doesn't have a ton of leverage here with the market the way it is now. This could be both good for the team and Duggar.

Agreed. Pretty sure Mayo isn’t just letting Wolfe tag him without a good reason. In this off season if I have 100 worries or questions about what the Patriots are doing or going to do, Dugger getting tagged probably isn’t I that list of 100.

I think some people on the board just have a very different view of Dugger than the general consensus, maybe because he had to play somewhat out of position last year. ESPN/PFF/CBS/FOX etc all rank him as our top FA, and all but FOX (28th) had him as a top 25 player in this FA class.

Edit- I think Dugger is the best of the hybrid/box safeties available, most of the guys getting cut are more over the top safeties. I think the flood is good for NE though... 1, it helps bring Dugger's cost on a long term deal down (or they just get him for the 1 year, also fine) but also 2.... it might bring the cost down where adding someone like McKinney or Curl to play the high safety role.

As I mentioned, I definitely think this is good for NE. When tagged, Duggar had leverage as one of the few better S to hit the market. Now that the market has changed very quickly, I think negotiating a long term deal is in the best interest of both the team and player.

It could be that another team values him similar to NE in that he is a top hybrid S but the teams that released those similar players (Seattle, Buffalo) are also facing some harder financial/cap considerations and probably need to be very creative in roster changes if they want Duggar. I just don't see a team weakening another position and spending more than $10M per on him, especially with holes in their roster.
