Drew Pomeranz to the DL with left biceps tendinitis. Brandon Workman to take his spot on the roster. Starter for Thursday unclear.
Abraham said on twitter that it won't be Sale, that info came directly from Cora.I assume Sale will just start without the extra rest.
Edit: Nvm, he'll still be on extra rest.
I think they want an innings guy in case Wright can't go deep tonight/struggles in the weather and they want to save Velazquez.Workman? Jeez, can't we do a little better than that? I know he's been better lately, but still....
sorry.I think they want an innings guy in case Wright can't go deep tonight/struggles in the weather and they want to save Velazquez.
If they go with Beeks instead then Workman would pretty much go right back down anyhow.
He is on the 40 man.Beeks isn't on the 40-man. A move will need to happen.
Yeah, I was just coming back to edit that. My bad, Jalen. He is on the 40 man.

Amazingly that's correct. Amazing that the Sox are in that position not that you're right ERR.I am surprised it wasn't a position player. They are committed to keeping Lin in AAA I guess but what about...
...wait is Lin the only positional player on the 40 who is not either on the active roster or on the DL? That sure does limit flexibility.
Agreed. I guess this solves the What To Do With Drew thread.Let's get Pomeranz healthy, and then he can either rejoin the rotation or take the David Price role from last postseason as a half-stretched-out Millerian relief ace as appropriate.
There is no way he won't be back in the rotation in a contract year.Let's get Pomeranz healthy, and then he can either rejoin the rotation or take the David Price role from last postseason as a half-stretched-out Millerian relief ace as appropriate.
He doesn't get to make that decision and the way he's pitched, he doesn't have anyone else to blame. He'll get a shot in the rotation, I'm sure, but they're not bumping someone who is pitching well just so Pomeranz looks good as a free agent. There is no way he won't be back in the rotation in a contract year.
Having said that, I love giving Beeks a start this week.
Seems like TJ is inevitable. Here is an update on Pomeranz, but not a particularly happy one. From Soxprospects:
Syracuse Chiefs (WAS) 6, Pawtucket Red Sox 3
Drew Pomeranz struggled through 3 2/3 innings in his third rehab start with the PawSox as they were doubled up by the Chiefs. Pomeranz allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three. He has now allowed nine runs over 9 1/3 innings since coming back on July 2.
His velocity has been way down and his control erratic. Possible it’s just mechanics but he has the telltale signs of a serious injury. Why?
What a sad Pawsox lineup. Here is an update on Pomeranz, but not a particularly happy one. From Soxprospects:

Isn't it comparable to the first half of last season? His velocity has been way down and his control erratic. Possible it’s just mechanics but he has the telltale signs of a serious injury.
Seems like a wildly speculative conclusion to say that TJ surgery is ‘inevitable’ especially when his injury has been reported to be to his biceps. His velocity has been way down and his control erratic. Possible it’s just mechanics but he has the telltale signs of a serious injury.
They're having him pitch Wednesday in AAA.What the hell are the Sox going to do with him? He can't get pushed into the rotation if he's pitching like this.... and really shouldn't even be called up. Does he actually have options remaining?
Which should allow him to slide back into the rotation (in Edro's spot) for one of the games against the Orioles, depending on how they setup the rotation coming out of the break. (I expect Sale to get a few days rest).......Sure would like for DP to be pitching better in AAA, but assuming a lengthy Edro abscence, the Sox need him to step up and they are going to have to give him a chance before the trade deadline. They're having him pitch Wednesday in AAA.
Or he might suck and need more AAA time.Which should allow him to slide back into the rotation (in Edro's spot) for one of the games against the Orioles, depending on how they setup the rotation coming out of the break. Not like me to be overconfident, but the Red Sox eat NL teams alive. MFY, that’s another story. If he needs another week so be it. The timing of this injury crisis is pretty fortuitous IMHO. 4 days off for the ASB, followed by series against the Tigers and O’s.
After that a 4-game home set against the Twins doesn’t scare me despite dropping the series in Minneapolis. Then one tough week (2H vs Phi and 4H vs NY with at least a day off before and after the NY series) and then another easy week @Tor and @Bal.
Or to put it another way, the next 40 games (which takes us to 9/2) comes against teams with an average record of 7 games under .500 with plenty of days off to boot.
Full article this is from for those interested:Pomeranz sharp tonight:
Allotted 90 pitches to work with Wednesday, Pomeranz needed just 69 pitches to get through his six sharp frames. When the bottom of the seventh inning began, Pomeranz went to the left-field bullpen and threw more pitches under the watchful eye of former Red Sox closer Keith Foulke. The 29-year old Pomeranz threw 45 of his 69 pitches for strikes — a 65% strike rate that exceeds his 2018 MLB strike rate (60%) and last year’s rate (62%), as well. The 2016 National League All-Star spun knuckle-curveballs on nearly half of his pitches, generating all five of his strikeouts (and seven of his nine swinging strikes) on his hook. Pomeranz mixed in roughly a half-dozen cutters and a couple changeups, as well.
No mention of velocity has me a bit less optimistic than I would otherwise be, but we sure need him with EdRo down for a month+Pomeranz sharp tonight:

Someone on SoxProspects said 90. Had pinpoint control. Definitely a slippery slope at 90. His curve buys him a bit of slack. No mention of velocity has me a bit less optimistic than I would otherwise be, but we sure need him with EdRo down for a month+
90's better than 89, I guess, but not super-encouraging. Thanks for the data point.Someone on SoxProspects said 90. Had pinpoint control. Definitely a slippery slope at 90. His curve buys him a bit of slack.
Pomeranz with pinpoint control? That sounds really great, but has never happened at any time in his career. He's been pretty steadily around a 3.5 BB/9 from his first year in Oakland.Someone on SoxProspects said 90. Had pinpoint control. Definitely a slippery slope at 90. His curve buys him a bit of slack.
Yeah, this surprised the hell out of me, in a good way.Not much news but very good news for sure. I did NOT expect to see mention of Keith Foulke; i had no idea he was kicking around the system.
Two weeks in a boot plus rehab. That sounds like a month plus.Yeah, this surprised the hell out of me, in a good way.
Is Edro really out for a month+?
Hopefully Pom can fill in sooner rather than later.
We've heard the dreaded "optimistic he will pitch again this season," line so I think we are easily looking at least 6 weeks.Yeah, this surprised the hell out of me, in a good way.
