The Rich Hill story is very interesting. Under any normal, sane circumstance, you'd never ever pull him. But if Roberts believed (rightly or wrongly) that Hill might be headed towards another blister, that could keep him out weeks maybe, then he had an obligation to pull him. I have no idea if Hill's finger showed "heat".
One thing about Hill. The guy went from kind of a journeyman to this indomitable force. In his three starts for the Dodgers, he's gone:
6.0 ip, 5 h, 0 r, 0 er, 0 bb, 3 k
6.0 ip, 1 h, 0 r, 0 er, 2 bb, 8 k
7.0 ip, 0 h, 0 r, 0 er, 0 bb, 9 k
21.0 ip, 6 h, 0 r, 0 er, 2 bb, 20 k
Ridiculous.
And it's really too bad for his injury issues. Because once he started pitching for the Red Sox in 2010, he's put up this line:
199.2 ip, 2.57 era, 2.59 fip, 160 era+, 1.15 whip, 10.9 k/9
Contrast that with his career line up to that point:
395.1 ip, 4.87 era, 4.66 fip, 95 era+, 1.36 whip, 8.1 k/9
So he went from not much to being this incredible pitcher. Would love to have seen him get the perfecto.
