Much like the blue and gold dress debate.

Exasperated Coach or Exasperated Video Room Guy?
Exasperated SB Nation Commenter, more like it.

I enjoy the videos because sometimes it's amusing to laugh at his over-the-top fury, and sometimes he makes a good point that is illuminating. I would never judge our team by his breakdowns, but I can also take the basic idea and get something out of it, and decide for myself if what he's picking on is likely to be tactical choices, player physical error, or player mental error. Either way, watch a breakdown by him of our opponents getting roasted by the Celtics, and tell me it isn't enjoyable.

I haven't enjoyed any of his videos. I find it irritating when people speak like an authority about things they clearly don't know about. which I'm guilty of all the time but, whatever - hypocrisy.

What, you don't like him losing his mind every time a 7 footer gives up a contested step back 3 from Tatum?

I have to be in the right mood to enjoy him and he clearly knows some things, but he also doesn't believe in the idea that "good offense beats good defense" because every single time the offense scores, he think it's the fault of the defense. It's all entertainment anyway, but if he were serious he'd cut the timing of his videos in half and only focus on the plays where the defense actually fucks up.

He definitely has a POV, maybe throw it on mute.

Watching 7-8 minutes of film, after watching a game, doesn't hurt if you want to see what the Celtics are doing well or poorly

His takes might make more sense if this was game 7 of the NBA Finals. Guys can't exert maximum effort on every defensive play over 82 games. Not taking into account players that are bad on defense and general laziness. But, some of the lazy play is just conserving of energy.

Chris Bosch was on The Distraction Podcast a year or two ago and mentioned not being able to walk after playoff games because the games were so hard on his body. You're not putting yourself through that in game 15 of the regular season.

Anyone that has ever played basketball understands that you can't go 100% out on defense on every single play, it's always extremely noticeable at pretty much any skill level in crunch time when the defensive effort hits a maximum level.

Especially the high usage stars. Finding opportunities to hide and take a play off not only benefits the player but the team as well. Larry Bird was one of the best I've seen at this...LeBron is real good at it too.

Great offense will always beat great defense - sometimes great players can just make shots. All else equal, I want our guys playing better defense. Lower the percentages, tilt the probabilities in our favor, frustrate the opponent's intent by knowing tendencies and anticipating moves; induce errors.

To the extent that the guy fails to understand what our defensive intent and points of emphasis are, or what the alternatives were, he's wrong about stuff. But sometimes he's spotting something valid, like a player standing around doing nothing, or a failure to box out. Lack of that sort of thing was a hallmark of (classical) Belichick teams.

Get him a membership. He would fit in well with the doomsday they don't have what it takes posts when the Celtics fail to win every game in wire to wire blow out fashion.

Despite the exasperated persona, this guy makes really good points about positioning, which has little to do with whether someone is trying to conserve energy or not. The biggest takeaways I get from his videos is the blatant mistakes in positioning, picking up men in transition, pick/roll defensive technique, and the other errors in the fundamentals of defense.

I don’t expect every regular season defensive possession to have the same level of focus and the same energy level as the last defensive possession up one point, but I do expect sustained effort and consistent fundamentals.

Yeah maybe not (with regard to bolded)

I mean look at the first play that he breaks down in the ATL video. First he asks, "What is ATL doing here? If Murray is supposed to be switching, he should switch."

Well, according to this CsBlog article (posted by Ben Hogan in another thread), ATL isn't switching PnRs, it's playing show - which means that both the ball handler's man and the screener's man are supposed to show against the ballhandler for a few steps and then they scramble back to their man. But it seems pretty clear that ATL is not switching screens, in which case E.G.s analysis breaks down anyways.

And when he says, "Trae Young is right there in help", well the next time Trae Young plays effective help defense may be his first time during his NBA career.

I didn't make it very far through the video but I presume the other elephant in the room for ATL that isn't mentioned is that ATL is basically playing 4 on 5 on defense, which very well could affect how people are positioned. I mean look at the video in the CsBlog article under #10 ("Atlanta's defense is bad"). Trae Young enters the paint and sits there for about 5 seconds not really doing anything. ATL looks to be playing show coverage against the DHO and I presume Murray is supposed to be helping but none of it matters because Trae Young offers no resistance to the 2 Celtics who end up stationed under the basket with no ATL defender in sight (and also White was going to cut to the basket for a wide open layup as well until Banton and Kornet beat him to the spot).

FWIW I mute him and watch what the Celtic's offense is doing well.

The selfie video with hands waving fits in with his persona.

BUT I did enjoy his facial expression when his wife yelled at him to "take out the garbage when you're done down there"

Are we sure this isn't some kind of Plinkett Reviews-type performance art?
As long as he's going to bust out lines like "This one bugs me to Middle-Earth!", to me it hardly matters whether it's intentional or unintentional comedy.

Shouted himself hoarse by the end of the video. If that's performance art, it is some hardcore method acting, that's for sure.

The Bulls looked completely defeated from the tip.

33-year-old Vucevic looks especially toasty, good thing the Bulls spent this summer extending him for 3 more years at $60MM. Guess that is the going rate for "talent" in the NBA, but more like throwing good money after bad...

Franz Wagner + Wendell Carter Jr + #11 in last year's draft

This Bulls team is about the worst do of an “all in” roster I can remember….they are awful, have virtually zero upside, and every day they aren’t tearing it down is just risk.

Most of us noted when they made the Vucevic deal this wasn’t a good enough team to try that with, and the Ball injury was a big loss. But is an UGLY team and situation

The Vucevic trade is rarely mentioned as a heist in the Gobert mold, but it's sneaky up there. The Magic got Wendell Carter Jr., the pick that became Franz, and the #11 pick this past draft. Totally turned the Magic around, for a guy whose upside everyone knew was very very limited.

At least Gobert had DPOY upside (and we see Minny successfully utilizing that now). Immediately conveying the #8 pick (Franz) is just so, so bad. That #8 might end up being worth more than all the draft capital the Wolves send Utah combined, when you factor in the price of trading up.

At the time of the Vucevic blunder, Chicago basically had the pick of these 4/5s on their roster:
Wendell Carter Jr
Lauri Markkanen
Daniel Gafford
Patrick Williams
Daniel Theis
Thaddeus Young
Luke Kornet

A 31-41 team packaging WCJ + multiple Firsts for a 30-year-old, expensive, defensively challenged BIG was one way to go. That deal was Orlando's Nets/Billy King moment

Vucevic now gives me Kanter defensive vibes and probably has Billy saying nightly: "Can't play Kanter Vucevic".

Handing Nikola $60MM/3yrs this summer was interesting. They will have to scrape that deal off the bottom of their shoes in a year or two by attaching more assets.

But don't worry! They have the LaVine deal, and it's even worse!

That review of the Bulls defense was brutal. Billy D might not see the new year as Bulls coach. His players have bought out.

What happened to Ayo? He looked very useful at both ends against the Celtics last season.

There's something oddly fascinating about this guy's screech. I listen to a minute or so of his videos and the content is trash (Vucevik should definitely be in the face of opposing centers 30 feet from the cup) and yet it's a combination of incredibly irritating and compelling -- sort of Howard Beal(e) in Network's "I'm Mad As Hell and I Can't Take It Anymore" but on an endless loop. I'd hope it's a Plinkett style performance art thing, but sadly I suspect it's just a pathetic Long Islander (is that what that accent is? Queens? I dunno...) who, when he isn't screaming at basketball players, is probably a Q enthusiast. And yet...I click play even if just for a few seconds.

I can imagine, just speculating here, that the lockerroom in Chicago is both checked-out and a bit toxic. They are going nowhere, they know it, and guys are going to get traded. That's tough for role players (who need some structure to perform well) and younger players. I can easily imagine practices are halfassed, Donovan is thinking about next college gig, etc.

Laker Nation keeps talking about bringing Caruso back, but they don't have the assets (unless Reaves is offered).

Wouldn't be shocked if LaVine or DeRozan ended up with the Lakers after Bron's recent comments

Agree with most here, it sure does look like the Bulls checked out early this season.

I lasted through a minute of that and I think there were 6 "Joe Mazzulla is terrible" lines. LOL.
The video opening with JM being "an absolutely reprehensible basketball coach" is just perfect. I also like how he screams himself hoarse in six and a half minutes.

Mazzula’s teams were ranked second in defense in Mazzulla’s first season, and is second this year.

Joe has decided to implement a lot of drop coverage this regular season, which of course would be more effective with KP at center. It’s probably a good idea to limit the amount of times that Porziņģis has to guard smaller offensive players out on the floor.

If this was a playoff game seven, I could see the frustration if Boston was just givping up open threes by being in drop. For the long-term benefit of the team, playing drop coverage is probably the way to go for much of the regular season. When push comes to shove, this team can play long doses of great lockdown man defense, with the big man switching out on the floor.

This makes a lot of sense. The Lakers harassed Haliburton for 94" with tons of on-ball pressure that impacted the Pacers' 3pt%. BUT there is no way they can play that defense over an entire regular season.

KP's rim protection defense has been good the last 3 seasons, drop makes sense for the C's (especially if they give regular season minutes to Luke). Although I'd like to see more switchy, on-ball pressure when it's Horford at the 5

Him pounding his computer desk to the point where the camera gets knocked around (~1:20) was good for a laugh.

2:35 looked like good defense to me, Allen just outside the paint but still in position to recover. Same with 4:05, Jaylen just made a well-contested shot.

I made it only about halfway through.

TRIGGER WARNING: Turn the volume off if this guy's analysis disturbs you (NY Times suggested)

Orlando's defense collapses on every paint touch. Ingles, Anthony, Bitadze & others on Orlando can be exploited defensively

What Tatum should be working on, more than his 6-7 OTD 3s/gm, is a couple more drive & kicks.
Let's see JT get those assist/hockey assists up at the expense of POINTZ!
