Guy is a total jackass but he’s right on a lot of these points, sadly.
he's full-on cuckoo, I muted it after 60 seconds

Bam's moving screens are tough to navigate, especially if KP is guarding BA and dropping. Until the Refs whistle or Boston adjusts coverage Spo will run it incessantly

ALSO credit to Miami for swinging the ball around, finding open 3s & hitting them

EVen by his standards that was dumb. I stopped when I got to the point where he said they should be jamming the screener 25 feet from the basket and going under to give Herro 3s, then argued that it was bad coaching that led to Jaylen Brown losing him man........

I had said in other thread that we are a switch defense and I wasn’t sure what Spo had done to create so much space. From that video it looks like he basically realized we weren’t going to switch our bigs and they just annihilated the drop coverage all night. Possession after possession of putting the bigs in drop

Yup. Biggest thing watching those highlights that the Heat were simply patient. They had a plan and executed it, made a lot of good passing decisions, and exploited the Celtics’ inexplicable lack of focus. Like, if this were not a team I despise, I’d be tipping my cap.

We played with it a bit at times but I agree. I was speaking about our general strength being switchability and autocorrect took the y off of “switchy” in the post you quoted.

Exasperated guy goes way overboard on what are micro decisions by players but it’s clear from the pattern of the video that they just destroyed us on the drop coverage

We're not good at switching really anymore, Porzingis is much better in drop, and at this point so is Horford, Jaylen struggles in switch too.

Yes they destroyed us while we played drop, but... a lot of it was poor decisions off-ball more than coverage issues, and some of it was.... in the NBA you have to decide who and what you're willing to live with, and the Celtics decided 3s from the non-Herro/Robinson guys (particularly Martin/Jacquez) was what they could live with, usually an okay plan.

I think they should absolutely stick with drop. Better luck... they would have won, better execution... probably win. Sometimes a team just catches fire from 3, even bad shooters.

I had a lot more problems with the offense than the defense, even hitting 23/43 from deep the Heat only scored 111 points. That tells me that as frustrating as it was to watch... the defense was still easily at the level you can win with. The offense on the other hand was a mess.

KP was a mess on both sides of the floor and the offense wasn't great BUT

Miami shot 50% or better in 3 of their 4 wins against Boston in the playoffs last year. This is how they beat the C's.

Letting the Heat shoot OPEN 3s like they did last night is a really bad strategy.
Its the playoffs (much different than regular season) the Heat adjusted after G1, it's the C's turn to make adjustments

We just had this conversation after game 1 and I thought Bam scored pretty easily in the paint. The responses to me were that the Cs had a great strategy of letting Bam try to get his, but close out on the shooters.

So game 2 what do the Celtics do? Not close out on the shooters. Why the change in strategy? Or was it more just lack of effort on Boston's part?

I think the focus here tends to be on what the Celtics do wrong instead of what the Heat do right. It was the same way last year, even though they had beaten two teams pretty handily in the first two rounds.

Should the Celtics handle them pretty easily? Of course. But it's just freaking infuriating how much better the Heat play when the playoffs start. The team that showed up last night was so much better than your average 8 seed. There is so much the Celtics could or should have done better. We think that teams should be redline in intensity when the playoffs come around and should not overlook anyone, but that's unrealistic when you're talking about a two month slog. But for pete's sake, there are a number of teams in the NBA that the Celtics would sweep pretty easily and get a nice confidence building series. But the Heat are just a different kettle of fish. Sucks. Now we know. At least the team knows 1-1 instead of 0-2 like last year.

SOme of it was closeout issues, but.....
The Celtics let certain guys take all the 3s they wanted in game 1 (Jovic, Martin, Jacquez, Bam, Wright, Highsmith) there was even that hilarious play where Jrue went to closeout and realized it was Bam and ran away.
The differences were:
1. Heat were more hesitant to take them...
2. Those guys shot 7/23 on those shots

if they continue to give up wide-open/open 3s, like last night, this series will go 6 or 7

Wow, I almost got all the way through one of those before I couldn't take it anymore. Takeaway is that they played less drop and stayed connected to shooters a little better? Great defense no matter what the changes were for sure.

definitely a combination of effort, staying connected to the perimeter players, & slightly less drop on the Bam moving screens

Effective NBA playoff adjustments are usually this: lots of micro things in response to specific deficiencies and small gaps you're leaving the other team.

They're rarely big ones like "stop guarding Tony Allen" or "bench Kanter".
