Guy looks toast, he’s been awful for the last four years. Not sure I understand how he was able to command a major league deal; assume he makes the team. Meh. I guess it’s depth.

Maybe he is the multi inning RP they said they wanted, and this allows them to stretch Wink out in AAA. Maybe Lorenzen wouldn’t sign if he couldn't be promised a rotation spot. We don’t even know the terms of the deal yet. On the surface it looks curious, but I’m guessing Breslow and Bailey know more about pitching than any of us.

I almost always give management benefit of the doubt, as they certainly know more than I do. And I doubt they're counting on him for very much. But my unsophisticated eyes can't really find any bright spots looking at his numbers.

Who is getting dumped off the 40 man for Chase?
Giolito and Hendriks will not be taking up 40 man space once on the 60-day IL, I believe. I see above it may be Murphy and Hendriks is maybe already there.

I've got to think this move is strictly for depth and long relief, a role I don't think Lorenzen saw as too appealing when he could go to the world champs. Let's also wait and see the real numbers, not sure why he'd command 4.5 mil after being released from a ml contract.

Here are a couple of tidbits from Cotillo's article:

https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2024/03/red-sox-sign-free-agent-rhp-to-fill-one-of-final-spots-on-opening-day-roster.html

He hit free agency after the season and inked a minor league deal with Pittsburgh in February but didn’t make the Pirates after holding opponents to three earned runs in 11 innings (2.45 ERA) and striking out nine batters in four spring outings.

Anderson has a 6.19 ERA in 192 major league innings over the last four seasons. He did do an above-average job limiting hard contact last season, finishing in the 92nd percentile of all pitchers in hard-hit percentage (31.7%) and the 82nd percentile in average exit velocity (87.4 mph), per Statcast.[/QUOTE]

On one hand: he's terrible
On the other: they got him within hours of his release, kinda like Slaten? It seems pretty intentional at least.

I hoping Corey Kluber V2.0 doesn't cost as much as the first version...
Come on, this guy isn't being looked at as an opening day starter or even a regular part of the rotation. Long relief and depth is a need. A deal like this won't tie their hands if it doesn't work out.

Yeah, pretty sure he'll be the Opening Day starter, and have the same contract. It's almost identical.
I mean god, I hope not. Really I'm just thinking that signing another very old guy feels much more like a Bloom move than what we've seen from Breslow. OTOH this signing probably definitely closes the door on any hope of landing Montgomery, the same way the fact that they'd moved on to Kluber closed the door on bringing Eovaldi back.

Don’t most teams take fliers on guys for their last roster spots, when the alternatives all have options remaining? It doesn’t seem all that hard to understand, as long as we don’t assign any expectations to him. At all.

I think this is right. He’s a (likely)cheap, veteran arm who they see something in. The Pirates cut him, so he’s just happy to have a job and will do whatever the Sox want. If it doesn’t work out, they’ll release him. Not really worth much emotion.

Yes, and Cotillo expects the following to be the case.

Anderson, who opted out of a minor league deal with the Pirates, will join the Red Sox as a multi-inning reliever who has the ability to make a spot start if needed. On Friday, manager Alex Cora said he hoped to have two multi-inning options in the bullpen to start the season; it appears Anderson and Josh Winckowski, who Cora confirmed would be on the team Saturday, will take those roles.

The bolded part seems like a pretty big red flag.

If he can chew up a bunch of innings in April while the starters are ramping up (and when there are precious few off days), it'll be worth it.

I don't expect to see him on the Memorial Day roster, though

The Pirates have a boatload of good young pitching and some roster issues of their own with guys who need to be on the ML roster or waived.

Righty Roansy Contreras and lefties Josh Fleming and Bailey Falter are out of minor league options (they must pass through waivers to go to Triple-A) and loom as alternatives to Jones, who has stood out this spring and seems to be the favorite for the No. 5 spot. Pérez is on a one-year contract and Gonzales is entering the last guaranteed year on his contract. They are this year's Rich Hill, veterans who can take the ball every fifth day in the first half, then get flipped at the trade deadline so the Pirates can give a younger pitcher a look in the second half. Pittsburgh also has Domingo Germán in camp on a minor-league contract.

It would have taken a lot going wrong for the Pirates for Anderson to have cracked the roster. And he had a pretty good spring by the numbers, as shown in a post above, including 9 k's in 11 innings while giving up only 3 earned runs. Anyway, I think it would have been more surprising if he stuck in Pittsburgh, and in and of itself is not a red flag in my eyes at all.

Seems like not a bad sign that the Rays grabbed him and tinkered with him a bit last year, which from a cursory look bumped his fastball up a tick (to 94) and boosted his chase rate (har).

Not expecting much. Seems like an easy DFA once Mata recovers from his injury, Criswell gets stretched out, or maybe Fitts gets promoted (he’d need adding to the 40-man next winter anyway).

I guess the signing of German made Anderson redundant. I was figuring if there was ever a team in need of a placeholder, it's the Pirates, since Paul Skenes could be in the rotation by June, and Anderson, if pitching well, could have been flipped at that point.

I realize Anderson is just a warm body, but those soft contact numbers are a little something to wish on.

They are. And I found his spring game logs. He didn't suck, which isn't nothing.

He will also get nowhere near what Lorenzen got, he made 720 K last year and just opted out of a ml deal.

Anderson's career salaries through 2023.

On one hand: he's terrible
On the other: they got him within hours of his release, kinda like Slaten? It seems pretty intentional at least.

It does seem deliberate to fill a current specific need.

OTOH this signing probably definitely closes the door on any hope of landing Montgomery, the same way the fact that they'd moved on to Kluber closed the door on bringing Eovaldi back.
I don't think Monty's coming, but this deal should have absolutely no bearing on that at all. Kluber cost 10.5 mil and a rotation slot. Anderson will be lucky to get 10% of that and is mop up and depth.

It does kind of sound like Anderson was a guy they had on a short list of potential pickups if he was released. Especially since they signed him to a major league contact immediately. No waiting to see the market develop at all.

They wanted him, despite all of our reservations.

Maybe they think they can increase his spin or velocity, or even that his stuff is good enough to throw quality strikes. Who knows?

Doesn’t “giving us innings” depend on being able to get guys out? This dude seems to greatly struggle with that.

But hey, he’s alive and cheap. So he fits the profile.

I think the pen looks as good or better than it would have without the move, and he doesn't displace anyone important, which is really all I care about. Well I like the added depth, too.

I mean he's going to be the 13th pitcher. All those guys struggle or they wouldn't be the 13th guy. And 13th guys come cheap. Worst case he's DFA'd in short order.

If innings is the goal, I certainly can give them some innings. Cheap.
Picking up Pirate cast offs does not seem ideal to me.
Yeah, I'll take Anderson. And again, the Pirates have their own pitching crunch. His spring performance was solid and had nothing to do with anything as far as him sticking there.

Yeah, that’s fine. I don’t see how adding a guy who’s really stunk for 4 years makes anything better. But it’s a low risk move presumably.

Obviously I’m just grumpy after this mess of an offseason. And I get prickly when I read rationalizations that a chump like this can eat innings. I mean, literally anyone can give us innings if we don’t care if they’re effective.

Well obviously Breslow & Co. care, and think he can be effective in the role they signed him for. Maybe they're wrong, and you can call it rationalization, but there should be enough posted in this thread to explain why they may look at him as more than a Pirates castoff or simply a pitcher who's sucked for four years. There's a reason they like him at least enough to prefer him for their final bullpen slot.

But yeah, I get the grumpy. We've been underwhelmed all winter to say the least.
