Week 6, after the Browns gameJimmy G to Cleveland Week 5! Book it!
Seriously though, that sucks. I was rooting for him to be pretty good and stick it to the Redskins.
He had a better rookie year than Luck.RGIII has to be the most overhyped and ultimately underwhelming quarterback since...Ryan Leaf?
His rookie year was very solid and really entertaining to boot. I thought we had an improved Randall Cunningham in our midst, but alas he's about as tough as an Oreo cookie sitting in milk for an hour.He had a better rookie year than Luck.

For some reason, that image makes me uncomfortable. His rookie year was very solid and really entertaining to boot. I thought we had an improved Randall Cunningham in our midst, but alas he's about as tough as an Oreo cookie sitting in milk for an hour.
Yup. Which makes the Browns look not very smart for taking him. This is sad.
The League caught up defensively to what RGIII and Kap were doing. That's point 1.
But even if it hadn't, RGIII was never going to be able to sustain that style of play physically. He is not very big and he is susceptible to injury. Which is what led him to flat out tell the Shanahans that he wasn't going to play that way anymore. That's point 2.
So 2012 was not sustainable. And once you get him out of that kind of offense, he is just not a very good QB.
Browns are very good at the bolded.Yup. Which makes the Browns look not very smart for taking him.
Too bad though, as mentioned above he was fun to watch in his brief prime.

I watched about 5 plays of the game - the first one RG3 took a 5 step drop, and as soon as his feet set, one of his lineman was pushed into his legs - he spun off the guy, sidestepped and was hit by another defender. The next play was similar.Jimmy G to Cleveland Week 5! Book it!

I think taking RGIII was actually a pretty good move all things considered given the overall strategy of the Jackson/DePodesta regime, which is clearly to build for the long haul.Browns are very good at the bolded.
It makes even less sense given their current starting QB was sitting on the bench. It's not like they had to wheel Curtis Painter out there, Cousins had already shown some flashes, there was zero reason to risk RG3 on that leg.I still think the decision to play him injured in the playoffs was a career ender. There is no comparison to the preinjury guy. Perhaps it would have unfolded the exact same way, but he could have had time to learn the position, if he still had his legs.
Being their live, it was even worse than that. Not only were the Eagles in his face all game, it is hard to overstate how "not open" his receivers were and how "not blocking" the guys in the backfield were.I watched about 5 plays of the game - the first one RG3 took a 5 step drop, and as soon as his feet set, one of his lineman was pushed into his legs - he spun off the guy, sidestepped and was hit by another defender. Never had a shot.
The couple huge Skins fans I know absolutely believe this is the core problem. He injured his leg more badly in the game, lost some agility, got gunshy, and tried to change his game...and that was it. Had he sat out the game, healed....who knows.I still think the decision to play him injured in the playoffs was a career ender. There is no comparison to the preinjury guy. I don't think there was much politically that could have been done. RG3 wanted to play and he was in tight with the fantasy GM, err ... owner, which effectively game him more power than the coach. I think Shanahan would have benched if he could have. The couple huge Skins fans I know absolutely believe this is the core problem. I've heard this a lot - but I really don't see any evidence for it. Shanahan's comments at the time made it clear it was his decison - and his contract gave him pretty much full autonomy.I don't think there was much politically that could have been done. If the Shanahans were such geniuses, why did the trade away such a huge package for someone who you cite as a gimmick and frail? Someone who can't read a defense? If I'm not mistaken, Mike had the GM reigns and made that trade, no? That doesn't sound like a fucking genius to me.The League caught up with his game. Pure and simple. Which is why THE Colin Kap thread is about the national anthem. And why Kap is a backup QB.
He was going to revolutionize the League. So was the fucking Wildcat offense. But Anthony Joseph Sparano III is an offensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings.
Wake up. The gimmicky shit in the NFL lasts about a year. The defensive coordinators are too smart, the defensive players too athletic. Option anyone?
And even if it were sustainable, RGIII was not the guy. He is frail. He had serious injuries in college.
RGIII had a fabulous year. The Shanahans were fucking geniuses. But he did not have the skills to sustain success on the NFL level. He throws a nice long ball but he cannot read defenses. His skills in other fundamentals are way behind the curve. Like footwork -- that basic. No less than Greg Cosell fell on his sword and confessed error.
Let it go.
That decision was unconscionable. No idea how much it hampered him long term but it was indefensible while it was happening.I still think the decision to play him injured in the playoffs was a career ender. It pays to be local. RGIII was Snyder command, not a Shanahan wish. (Just as the Donovan McNabb trade was a Synder command). Why do you think Cousins was drafted behind RGIII after they surrendered so much to get RGIII?If the Shanahans were such geniuses, why did the trade away such a huge package for someone who you cite as a gimmick and frail? Someone who can't read a defense? If I'm not mistaken, Mike had the GM reigns and made that trade, no? That doesn't sound like a fucking genius to me.
He never should have kept him in that playoff game. All other criticisms on RGIII aside, that was a stupid decision. After that, it's all speculation on what he could have turned into. I generally agree the league would have adapted, but I think he still could have been a top half qb.
Agreed. I have never felt so sick watching a rival team's QB take hits. It had a "last Boy Scout" feel to it. If Romo comes back before week....8?.....I will probably feel the same way. That decision was unconscionable. No idea how much it hampered him long term but it was indefensible while it was happening.
