Fear not, for behold, I bring you tidings of great joy.
Thank God. Let some other message board bitch about him being caught flat-footed and out of position on every single snap.

This is fantastic, but it would be even more incredible if someone could superimpose the goat

I feel like Harmon's kind of like a younger version of Gregory - not enough of a big hitter to be a prototypical strong safety, and not the range to be a prototypical free safety, but decent enough to be a good backup at both positions. Maybe that's all they want out of that safety spot, but I wouldn't be surprised if they make a move for a heavy hitter (Ward, or maybe Calvin Pryor or Deone Buchanan in the draft) since both Wilsons look like long shots to make next year's squad at this point.SeoulSoxFan said:
Gregory "could" be back at a lower number
Hopefully they aren't counting on this year's draft to come up with a starting safety. If anything, this probably means they have confidence in the kids (Harmon in particular) AND would look into the safety market.
T.J. Ward would be perfect for this team, and Lombardi could provide a lot of intel on him.

Good Lord. Just have to come at this right away. No warmin' up in the bullpen or nothin'?( . ) ( . ) and (_!_) said:Gotta make room for Vinnie Sunseri somehow right? I mean it's mortal lock that they are drafting this kid 3-4 rounds earlier then they need to.
Plays for Saban, special teams ace, little know safety with little respect from the scouting community. This is going to happen.

This could be a courtesy thing, too. He gets to hit free agency in the major FA period and have a whole offseason to earn a job with a new team rather than having to scramble for a job after being cut in camp.mpx42 said:
He didn't have any roster bonuses, no. I think the Patriots just have a lengthy process they go through where they decide which players are part of their future, after evaluating that year's crop of free agents and draft prospects. Next week is the last before free agency so we should see a few more moves.
tims4wins said:Well Harmon was a rookie so I'm sure they are projecting some improvement. But I also think they will bring in a veteran to compete. May even be Gregory on a minimum deal.
Tony C said:if the master plan is to bring in someone else, wouldn't it make more sense to cut Gregory after that deal is done? Even if I'm comfortable with their evaluation of Harmon as playing a bigger role, it's hard to see how he'd be an improvement over Gregory. With injuries and such the Pats need 3 safeties, and seems odd to dispense with the competency of Gregory until a 3rd safety is in-house.

BB has always respected veterans and have let them go early, so they can have a better chance of landing elsewhere. I'd guess that that's the case here.

That could be it, but they didn't even ask him to take less money and there are other likely veteran cuts that haven't happened yet. Sopoaga and Wilson come to mind.
I would have cut Soap and Wilson before Gregory if I cut Gregory at all.

Perhaps Wilson is healthy and the team feels he will contribute this season.
I suspect it has something do with this: http://overthecap.com/explaining-the-june-1st-designation/phragle said:

But they feel Gregory couldn't contribute?
Super Nomario said:I suspect it has something do with this: http://overthecap.com/explaining-the-june-1st-designation/
Gregory was a FA after 2014, so they wouldn't have gained anything by waiting. With Wilson, they have the option to wait until after 6/1 and split his remaining signing bonus over 2014 and 2015. They could designate him a post-6/1 cut, but they only get two of those. It doesn't look like they gain anything by waiting to cut Sopoaga - he's under contract in 2015, but it looks like all his dead money is in guaranteed salary this year, so I'm not sure.
Dogman2 said:
A healthy Wilson with Harmon as the backup means Gregory was redundant and what Nomario said.

They would have gained security. They don't gain anything by cutting him now. It's not like they need the cap space.
I don't see any downside of keeping him around for the 90-man. Unless - like SSF said - they were trying to be nice, but if they were really trying to be nice wouldn't they give him a chance to take a pay cut?
Teams carry four or five safeties.
Dogman2 said:
Well, they gain the cap space which helps if they plan on offering deals to Talib/Edelman/Bryant. Even though the cap has been raised, the additional space is certainly helpful.
No shit on carrying 4-5 safeties. You aren't thinking this through.
I think they were trying to be nice. Maybe they did talk to him about a pay cut, but couldn't come to an agreement and so they parted ways.phragle said:

They have plenty of cap space to resign Talib, Edelman, and Bryant in free agency while still keeping Gregory.
What am I not thinking through? This is very simple.
He's talking about Red Bryant and we wouldn't re-sign him.the1andonly3003 said:resign Bryant? Bryant who?
