The link below is to a MassLive article by Chris Cotillo detailing the roster crunch the Red Sox are about to face when Yu Chang and Pablo Reyes come off the IL.

Cotillo, after interviewing Cora, breaks it down thusly:

-- Cora says that when he comes back, Chang will be the starting shortstop
-- That leaves four players -- Reyes, DaBlizz, Hernandez and Arroyo -- for two spots
-- The first cut is obvious ... Hamilton
-- Reyes, Hernandez and Arroyo cannot be optioned
-- Cora further complicates things by telling Cotillo Justin Turner will start to get time at second base
-- And, of course, there's the eventuality of Trevor Story's return

What say yu ... err, you, SoSH as to how they should handle this?

I'm not sure it's clear that Reyes > Hamilton, assuming Chang is fully healthy. Hamilton could still develop into a useful utility player, I don't see any future at all for Reyes, and he's only valuable in the present if Chang is out.

I definitely think the clock is ticking on Kike. He's 31, a free agent, can be plugged in on a contender as a utility player for like 5 positions, and he ain't cheap (at $10M/yr). There's little reason for the Sox to keep him, and lots of good reason why another club might want him.

I assume by "cut" he means Hamilton will be optioned to Worcester, not released.

I imagine Bloom is working the phones shopping Reyes. He was brought in as a disposable middle infielder to cover the loss of Chang. I imagine he's the most likely to go if someone has to. Maybe he can slip through waivers and would accept an assignment to Worcester?

Possibly, but someone does have to be cut from the 40 when Chang returns, and Reyes is occupying a spot while is on the 10 day IL.

But basically, we agree.

Yep, 100%. I'd totally look to move Kiké. He's won two World Series', and is a useful utility guy for a championship contender. Even if they get a lottery ticket for him, that's probably the move to make.

With the roster as it's currently constructed, Hamilton and Reyes are the odd men out. Turner getting reps at 2B seems to be in preparation for the possibility of Hernandez or Arroyo being part of a trade.

It’s pretty easy. If the Sox sell, I’d imagine every short-term position player is gone (possible exception of Turner and Verdugo). No logjam at MI whatsoever. Story, Yu and AAA play out the year.

If the Sox decide to buy, they’ll keep Kiké as the utility player (I think Duran has put Duvall on the block in every scenario).

Thus, I think the only player on Cotillo’s list who might survive the coming month is Kiké.

The other option is to trade Duvall (which they should do anyway) and then have Kike be the backup center fielder
I'd look to move both.

Duvall seems perfect for Cinci, for whom he could be a high-end fourth outfielder, complementing their all-LH outfield. Pay his paycheck, and see if you can get a top 25 prospect or two from a deep system. It's basically the Vazquez trade again. Then we turn CF into a Duran/Refsnyder platoon until Rafaela is deemed ready.

Anaheim suddenly has injuries at SS (Neto; oblique) and CF (Trout; hamate bone) but both guys should be back in time for the playoffs. (Rendón is day to day, too.) Kiké could be very useful depth for them as a veteran IF/OF fill-in for a couple months, but they might also be interested in Reyes or Chang or even Arroyo. They need basically need healthy bodies for the next 6 weeks or so.

BTV suggests that Kiké, Reyes, and Kiké's salary should return Jo Adell — which is to say that BTV thinks Adell is now basically valueless. I don't know that I quite believe that, but I would love to make a trade of that kind: buy way low on Adell and send him for a chill offseason to hang out on the beach in Huntington Beach with Jarren Duran's friends and see if post-prospect sleeper lightning can strike twice. We could really use a young, RHH corner outfielder with pop, and dude's been crushing AAA and is still just 24.

I think Reyes has a bit more value to this club because of his versatility. If Arroyo could play competently anywhere else or was more than just the marginal offensive upgrade, I'd keep him over Reyes, but man he does not fit on this roster.

Kiké had 9 DRS as recently as 2020 in 220 innings as a 2b, though has been neutral since then. I'd rather have him over Arroyo too.

They all suck though, so *shrug* If they get offers for any of them, I'd pounce.

This is a great thread title.

Got to think that Kiké is the most expendable but most valuable on the trade market of the four. Just could get confusing if Kiké gets called into Cora's office on the day that he gets traded, asks who's starting at SS that day, and Cora answers "Not you".

I am a simple man. The Red Sox are 11-7 (.611; 99 win pace) when Yu Chang plays. 8-6 (92 win pace) when he starts.
