Grant who?I love Walsh.
This group is a far cry from a couple recent Summer C's rosters. Fortunately, it's only summer league, so it doesn't really matter.Besides JDD, the rest of this roster is bad. Davison looked like his game plan was to just set up others, and took way too long to get his offense going. I expected him to look a little better in year two. He does throw the lob very well, and can rack up assists.
The Celtics bigs got destroyed. Azubuike looked clueless for most of his minutes, as did Balkerowski
Yeah, the least they could have done is bring back the big guy from last summer who was an incredible passer (and couldn’t stay in front of anyone on d to save his life)https://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?threads/summer-league-2023.39761/reply"e=5641702

I was hoping to see Vincent Valerio-Bodon, whose skill set sounds intriguing, but he was a DNP-CD. Not sure if he's hurt or what.
There's a once in a generation prospect every five years or so now.Not a reaction to his underwhelming debut last night, but it's time to stop pretending that Wembanyama the prospect is on the same level as 2003 Lebron. A big part of what made Lebron special was that he had an NBA body by age 16 (6'8 240), he was already overwhelmingly strong and athletic relative to the average NBA player, and his frame seemed perfect for a player to both stay health and have a long career. He had literally no weaknesses as a prospect (maybe FT shooting), other than "is the hype and pressure too much?" He's tall and skilled, but Wemby has some real physical concerns that bump him down a level, at least for me. He's been called a tall Durant, but until his numbers match that (he shot 28% from 3 this year in France and 29% for his pro career, compared to Durant's 40% at Texas), it's just not a good comp.
He's probably on the same level as Zion or AD, but definitely below guys like Shaq and Duncan, let alone Lebron. Once in a decade prospect instead of once in a generation is enough.
Trevion Williams. What happened with Kabengele? Saw his name on the roster for another summer league team. Is he no longer with the C's?https://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?threads/summer-league-2023.39761/reply"e=5641702

That's really well stated. I've been wondering how to articulate something between "he's the best prospect since LeBron!" and "he'll be a skinny Bradley-esque bust!". It's obviously much closer to the former, but I think you got the balance just right: the athletic skills are eye-popping and so are some of his basketball skills, but there's still legit questions about how he'll reach his considerable ceiling that aren't being raised amid the hype train. Not a reaction to his underwhelming debut last night, but it's time to stop pretending that Wembanyama the prospect is on the same level as 2003 Lebron. Agree with this. If we could leave behind the hype, assuming he stays healthy, Wemby is going to be an impact guy on defense. He looked good on ball and off-ball, he's just a menace.I don't know if Wemby is the next LeBron, but I think people are way too dismissive of him based on his first SL game. He's going to lay a lot of eggs this season, all rookies do.
He's also not the kind of player that is always going to dominate with his scoring, he's not really going to explode a lot with 30 points, at least at this stage of his development. He's got all these other traits, like his passing and especially his defense, that make him stand out.
They are both going to be very good players for a long time if they get healthy. Wemby's got 3 extra inches. Both players will be incredible off ball defenders. Both will have times where their on ball matchup is problematic. I think Wemby is a level above Chet, but I think they will likely both make a lot of all star teamsIs Wemby that much different than Chet?
I very much agree. For both, it's their health that will dictate how dominant they are. Really big people get injuries that shorter people don't.They are both going to be very good players for a long time if they get healthy. Wemby's got 3 extra inches. Lebron also runs very efficiently on the balls of his feet (as opposed to a heel/toe movement). Wemby has been taught similar techniques from an early age. Contrast to how a guy like Wade ran, which puts a lot more stress on the body.I very much agree. For both, it's their health that will dictate how dominant they are. Lebron never got hurt until he was almost 40 because he's all muscle and has been so since he was 16. A tank, and not gangly. It's the gangly that always messes up the really, really big basketball players.
I've seen this around. Is this a real thing or is it bro science?Lebron also runs very efficiently on the balls of his feet (as opposed to a heel/toe movement). Wemby has been taught similar techniques from an early age. Contrast to how a guy like Wade ran, which puts a lot more stress on the body.
On that note, he's the tallest player in the league and one of the youngest. It's obviously going to take him some time to grow into his body before he starts to be truly dominant, especially on offense. What's remarkable about him is the array of skills and speed he possesses at his height. I think it's safe to say that combination has never been seen before. So while with any player this tall there is greater risk of injury, a chance he doesn't fill out enough physically, and some chance not all of the skills develop completely, the upside is off the charts.I don't know if Wemby is the next LeBron, but I think people are way too dismissive of him based on his first SL game. He played in the elite French league which is better than NCAA by a lot. If someone had flown Durant over there to play, he likely would not have hit 40%. And Durant, FWIW, was terrible shooting threes in his first NBA season. Maybe you're right, but I don't think the Durant comparison is completely off base. The thing is, there's not a great comp for Wemby which is part of what makes him so fascinating (and somewhat perplexing/polarizing).He's tall and skilled, but Wemby has some real physical concerns that bump him down a level, at least for me. Anecdotally, 100% true. As I understand it, if you can shift from a heel striker to a ball striker, you effectively turn your entire leg from hip to toe into a spring, so it allows you to flow from kinetic to potential back to kinetic energy much more efficiently. If you're constantly striking with your heel, no only are you not taking advantage of nature's free perpetual motion machine, but you're also putting significantly more stress on your knees since the impact from your heel is transferred straight up into that joint. It's basically like hitting a pothole with/without shocks.I've seen this around. Is this a real thing or is it bro science?
I'll take your word for it that the top French league (in 2023) is better than the NCAA in 2007, but at some point, you actually have to shoot well from 3 to be compared to Durant, who is perhaps the best shooting power forward in history. Plus despite the poor shooting from 3 as a rookie (when PJ Carlesimo decided he was a guard, for some reason), he still shot 87% from the FT line, a pretty clear indicator that he was going to be one of the best shooters in the league. Running one footed 3's aside, I don't quite see elite outside shooting as Wemby's future just yet.He played in the elite French league which is better than NCAA by a lot. Of course a healthy rich man's Porzingis is an All-NBA player. A healthy Porzingis would probably be a 3-5 time All-star by now.I'll take your word for it that the top French league (in 2023) is better than the NCAA in 2007, but at some point, you actually have to shoot well from 3 to be compared to Durant, who is perhaps the best shooting power forward in history. Regarding a good comp, there's a really easy one, both in terms of physical size and play style: Porzingis. I get that people don't like comparing the best prospect of the last few years (at minimum) to a guy who has made one all-star team in 8 years and despite his career season is probably no higher than 50th in the league at the moment, but that's the one. Imagine a healthy, rich man's Porzingis (a little better in every way possible), and that's the likely future for Wembanyama.
Yeah I don't mean it as a dig on Wemby (or KP), it's just what I think he'll look like when he's at his best. It's more fun to call arguably the best prospect of his generation a taller Kevin Durant or Gen Z Kareem, we expect that guy to be a top 20 all-time player at worst. I just don't see either of those guys when I look at Wembanyama, I see a better version of KP (which as you note, is absolutely a top 10 player and annual MVP candidate when healthy).Of course a healthy rich man's Porzingis is an All-NBA player. M’y two cents: the game was borderline unwatchable : Davidson was a poor shooting turnover machine, andScrubb was a high-talent upside draft name a couple years ago—think nighthob was (at the time) a fan.
I haven’t seen him enough to comment other thank to say profile-wise those higher skill/upside guys are a good pool to be fishing in.
? Grant guarded big guys. This kid isn't going to do that.Grant who?
