It amazes me to this day that Pats fans consider that pass to Welker "routine".  It was high, over his wrong shoulder, and would have been a great catch if he came down with it.  That incompletion is about 85% on Brady, 15% on Welker.

As for the Super Bowl, I said before the championship games that the NFC team would maul the AFC team, no matter the matchup.  I'm sticking with it, especially if the weather is bad.

That catch wasn't routine, but it's one NFL WR typically come down with, especially if it's uncontested. The ball was within even Welker's catch radius.

Put it this way:  David freaking Tyree somehow manages to come up with that ball.

But still, 100% of the blame has gone to Welker, and I've never heard one fan or commentator point out that Brady could have made a better throw.

Well someone made the wrong read, impossible to know who. Brady thought Welker was going to angle one way, but Welker chose not to.  Who was right? No one will ever know.  But regardless it's a catch he could have and should have made.

Welker getting a ring is a positive for me. He was a good player here for a long time

I have zero problem with that hit other than it should have been offensive PI.  Will still be very happy for Welker if he gets a ring.  I hope he performs well in the Super Bowl.  Pats have had way too much success for me to be bitter about good players going elsewhere and succeeding.

I'm with you, Stitch01. I loved that guy too long in NE laundry to hate him now, even considering his fall out with BB and his take out of Talib. There is nothing I loathe more in the NFL than a Manning, but every time I see Peyton complete a pass and I didn't immediately see to whom it was, I automatically think "I hope at least that was Welker."

That said, I am rooting hard against Denver. My sports-hate of Manning trumps my sports-love of Welker, in spades.

[edit: I wasn't worried about a mixed metaphor there as they are both cards related, but it still doesn't work. Anyway, I'm leaving it.]

I think the catch effectively ends the game. Worst case is you're up 5 with around 2:00 left.  Regardless, I place the blame much more on Brady than I do Welker. Maybe 80% on TB and 20% on WW.  Brady needed to make a better pass there.

The Pats were up 4 against the Giants in SB42 with just over 2 minutes left, and they couldn't keep NY from getting the winning score.  Just saying…

Seahawks destroy Manning, and Carroll gets run over by Knighton when he wanders too far into field of play while cheer-leading.

I dunno, Brady was trying not to get Welker killed by the safety who was running left to right, which is why he led him left, and Welker makes that catch 95+% of the time. He may make that catch more often than one where he leads him directly towards the defender and gets him hammered.

I disagree with your "effectively ending the game" as well. IF they get the TD or another first down, that pretty much does it, but if they do run it 3 times and kick the FG, I think the Giants march down at get a TD against that defense 50+% if the time. Brady also had, of all people, Solder wide open to the right on the 3rd and 11, the next play, but tried to fit one into Branch instead. Can't really blame him, but I always though him going to Solder there would have been epic. I believe he was eligible on the play.

Seems about 2x high, even with that Pats defense.

Branch drop on the last drive is an underrated horrible drop.  Watched that play on the All-22 film last week, not out of the question he scores and they're probably on the Giants 40 with plenty of time left.  Will have to back and watch for Solder on the other play.

Just while we're at opening up all these wounds, that pass was actually deflected. It was a pretty bad pass by Brady; Branch was wide open and he had room to get it over the zone coverage there. If he hits him, the ball is going to at least the Giants 40 with probably 45-50 seconds left.

Sal Pal on NFL Radio this morning said the secondary market for this game is bottoming out. A big cold front is supposed to come through next Tue/Wed and snow on Fri/Sat according to some models. Still kind of early to worry much about the precip forecasts though.

One thing Denver has going for them is unbelievable depth of receivers.  Manning can easily just ignore Sherman's area of the field and still have 3-5 other potential targets on the field who are all good at getting open and getting YAC.  As we saw with the 07 and 11 Pats teams, the only way you can really stop a team with that many receiving threats is to kick the hell out of them at the LOS and consistently get to the QB with a 4 man rush.

One thing SF did was just line up their worst receiver -- Patton -- across from Sherman on the final drive (until, inexplicably, the last play). Seattle is crazy if they don't match him up on DT.

They rarely do so though.  Sherman usually plays LCB, no matter who the receiver is.  At times they will match him up, but it isn't often and when it does happen, it's usually against someone like Gronk, Graham or Tony Gonzalez.

10 Day weather forecasts are showing highs in the mid 30s lows in the mid 20s.  30% chance of precip and winds around 7-8 mph.

There is uglier weather forecast for Fri and Sat, so if that stuff gets delayed, things could get gnarly.

If Sherman plays LCB only, then Denver is kind of crazy to not simply have D.Thomas line up on the other side of the field.  You may recall that Indy used to set up with Harrison on the right and Wayne on the left, almost exclusively.  Keep lining D.Thomas up away from Sherman and make Seattle adjust.

Snow and bitter cold, since I'll be watching from my couch with a wood stove keeping the room at 75 degrees.

But then I'll be kind of bummed because the worse the weather is, the more I think it would have given the Patriots the edge.  Oh well.

I suspect Carroll's staff will play Sherman on whichever side of the field they think Manning is more effective throwing. I know De. Thomas >>> DEN's other WRs, but not by enough to pass on a chance to make Manning go against his tendencies.

How is Manning at throwing the ball in precipitation? We've all heard about his struggles in cold weather, but I'm not sure if I've heard if he struggles in the rain or not.

The annual Madden game prediction is in. Broncos 31-28 in OT.
I would normally worry but this line makes me feel better
"...a 24-yard bomb to Wes Welker gave Denver a big lead going into the 4th quarter."
That certainly ain't happening

Is that the Hyatt in Secaucus that sits along the river; if so, what a shithole that place is, the convention rooms on the lower level stink like mold from being flooded several years ago and the lobby smells like atomic BO.

Too funny.

Politico: "Sen. Cory Booker is 'passed [sic] miffed' about coverage of this weekend’s Super Bowl, saying Monday that not enough recognition is being paid to the real host state of the game: New Jersey."

Did a Tecmo Super Bowl sim (of course that's more realistic) and the Broncos won 24-14. MVP NoSean Moreno (142 yards rushing).

Highs seem irrelevant -- when is the game set to go off, 6:30?  So it likely will be in the 30s, which isn't terrible but may be 25 degrees cooler than his last game.
