Dear Kyle Shanahan,

That is how you make sure the other team doesn't have enough time to score twice with five minutes left.

Hugs,

I think I actually stated in another thread that I was 'over it' with 42.

Just got home and turned on tv and it was on NFL network from earlier. Saw one play and was just like 'turn it off! Change the channel! Baaaahhh!!'

I retract my earlier statement.

The excellent Joseph Vincent SB LI video has a few clips and it made me nauseous just seeing those few moments. I can't imagine re-watching the game.

I find no solace here for 2007.

2011 I didn't expect them to win going in, so while it sucked, it's not traumatic.

Of course I say that now, avoiding watching it again...
Yeah it sucks, but it's been a decade...there's now been two more SB victories...

It sucks a lot...but...you know...

From Volin's Sunday column:

The Patriots had five offensive players participate in at least 90 percent of snaps — the five starting offensive linemen.
That speaks to two things -- incredible luck on the health front, and Dante coaching up that group to the extent where rotations weren't necessary.

We should have known.

It's not even sure that they weren't necessary, I think it was a change of philosophy or a resort to it.

I think DeGuglielmo (so?) saw rotations as a plus to keep guys fresher. Scar is old school and values continuity and playing next to the same guy every snap building chemistry.

The incredible luck on health obviously was huge.

Ya. I tried flipping on for a few plays. Still hurts.

But the pats just scored before half in XLVI. Alive!

I remember thinking it was close to over after the Herb 3rd and 3 conversion. Then green Ellis loses a yard then the Welker Gisele drop then the misthrow to Branch and then Manningham.

The pass to Branch was tipped by a zone LB. If it isn't tipped or Branch makes that adjustment and catch, he's probably on like the Giants 35 if he doesn't break it completely.

Oh you mean the drive before? Wasn't that also tipped? I keenly remember Solder breaking off wide open on that play and asking for the ball. He could have walked for 20 yards. Not sure if he reported elligible, but he sure acted like he did.

Wow, totally forgot Milloy and Law both dropping makeable picks the two plays before Willie's infamous mugging of Faulk on the would-be game-clinching Tebucky TD.

I also think Otis Smith should have scored on his INT as well. Seemed to run right into Patriots.

Yeah this was all part of knowing for sure as Boston fans that we were absolutely destined to lose, just like we were supposed to lose, as such was our fate and would always remain so. And not just lose, but lose like Charlie Brown trying to kick that football, or like Wile E Coyote trying to get the Roadrunner.

When that field goal went through for me it wiped clean '75 WS, '78 bucky fucking dent, Bruins/Canadiens "too many men" game, '86 WS, etc.

Just watched it again from 17-10. Pat Summerall, old field goal kicker himself, said "right down the pipe" as soon as Adam hit it, or maybe the video and audio were out of synch a bit. Summerall was a favorite of mine.

Who is the play by play announcer in XXXVIII? Simms is the color guy.

Summerall was clearly fading by that game, requiring Madden to take more of a role than maybe he usually would. Summerall would keep beginning points and not finishing them or just letting it trail off. Still, though, that voice. I love the replay of that game. The announcing style seems so antiquated now, but it's really a fantastic keepsake to keep on the DVR.

One interesting point -- I think Summerall was calling the game from watching on monitor while Madden was watching live I think. Summerall would react to every graphic or camera image while Madden seemed not always to know what Pat was talking about.

38 was Greg Gumbell.

Sports Hub has the radio call of the 4th quarter and OT. Zolak wondering why they went for a FG. At the time, it made the most sense to me as they couldn't come away without points.
Thank God they did. Last year 4th and 1 from the 16 down 8 with 6 minutes left they idiotically went for it and failed AND 4th and 6 from the 14 with 2:25 left still down 8 they again went for it and failed and then they scored with 12 seconds left and lost by two.

I really thought they were going to repeat that mistake and not take the points.

Both calls were probably right in Denver. The 4th and 1 was closer because they were down 8, but still probably right and I'd go for it. Kicking a FG on 4th and goal down 8 with 2:25 left would have been moronic. Even taking an erroneous outcome based approach, Denver has better field position after the Pats kick a FG so the Pats would have had to go further to score the potential tying/winningTD and only ended up with 12 seconds to spare.

Kicking a FG last Sunday was pretty marginal. I'd have kicked but would have gone for it if was closer, like 4th and goal from the 10 or something. Not sure how they could have repeated a mistake regardless of outcome, think the Pats handled all those situations pretty well.

Right, Greg Gumbel. As soon as I resumed watching on the other TV with the sound louder it was obviously him.

You can tell this when they cut in a shot of AV in practice. Summerall thinks the kick they show is wide, when really they just don't show the other goalpost

Gregg Popovich was quite impressed with what he watched in another sport a week ago. On the Patriots' Super Bowl comeback: "That was an amazing display of mental toughness."

Was just thinking about Brady's longevity. Brady was teammates with Bruce Armstrong in 2000. Bruce Armstrong was teammates with Julius Adams in 1987. Adams was born in 1948, the same year Y.A. Tittle was drafted.

2016 Brady is so much better than 2004 Brady.
I just watched XXXVIII and, except for a bad miss, maybe 2, he was almost all dead nuts on all game. And, he moved in the pocket as well as ever. Not to mention that he is probably the best QB leader all this time. We are so lucky to have had such a great quarterback for so long.

The time between Brady's first SB start and his most recent is 15 years.
The only other quarterback in double digits is Elway, at 11
Montana is next at 8; Manning at 7

I will never get over 2007.

Ever.

Have never seen the Tyree catch other than live during the game, or watched a single play from that game.

That fucking perfect storm/lucky ass/10-6 Wild Card Giants team ruined a perfect season.

2011 doesn't bother me in the least, could give a shit less that they lost, just a Super Bowl loss like the game vs the Bears or the game vs the Packers.

But 2007.............................
