Domino time. According to The Marietta Daily Journal, The Weather Channel is threatening to move out of Cobb County unless they receive tax breaks for their reported $90 million expansion. I can't wait to see what Home Depot and other major companies here in Cobb start to ask for.

One of Cobb’s high-profile corporate citizens is threatening to leave if it doesn’t receive “significant” tax breaks in return for an expansion that includes 200 to 300 employees at an average salary of about $75,000.

The Weather Channel, headquartered in Cumberland and owned by NBC, has never asked for subsidies before, but it now needs a reason not to leave Cobb, said Kathy Angell, senior vice president of The Weather Channel’s taxation division, in a Nov. 1 email to Brooks Mathis, executive vice president of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce.

The company opened its current offices on Interstate North Parkway at I-75 and I-285 in 1996.

Its planned expansion is valued at $90 million, Mathis said in emails obtained by the MDJ. Shirley Powell, executive vice president, said The Weather Channel would not comment and that anything the MDJ reported at this point would be “speculation.”

Lawsuit a-comin!

ATLANTA —

Channel 2 Action News has learned exclusively that a lawsuit over the new Atlanta Braves stadium is expected to be filed against the Cobb County Commission in the next 10 days.

Channel 2's Lori Geary spoke to Atlanta Tea Party Patriots founder Debbie Dooley, who said it's about public money going into a private enterprise.

"We believe this is an unconstitutional use of the money, the taxpayer money," Dooley told Geary.

Dooley said the problem is the proposal uses almost $9 million a year from the general fund to help pay off the $300 million in bonds.

She calls it creative financing by the Cobb Commission.

"We believe the legal advice they received was on shaky ground," Dooley said.

Attorney and part-time Fulton County State Court Judge Louis Levenson told Geary the taxpayers could have legal standing,

"Being around the court system for a long time, I'm astonished the decisions people make without having thought it through. I'm not saying this wasn't well thought out, but the nuances of this could very well result in litigation for a long time," Levenson said.

Dooley said this is something that cannot stand.

"This affects the entire state of Georgia because if Cobb County is allowed to get away with this, you can bet other counties will do everything in their power to circumvent a vote by the people for something like this," Dooley said.

Dooley said they will have between five and 10 plaintiffs in the suit, involving people who live in Cobb County with several groups backing them.

Commission Chairman Tim Lee's office said he has no comment until the suit has been officially filed. He told Channel 2 Action News earlier the deal has been vetted.

I think the Tea Party movement became a hypocritical, nonsensical steaming mess, but here's a case where I'm thrilled to see someone voicing opposition to this garbage.

It's probably one cause that the Occupy movement would be willing to join them on.

Braves could ask (governor) Nathan Deal for stadium tax breaks

After securing taxpayer funding from the Cobb County Commission with relative ease, the Atlanta Braves now could be turning to a new source to help finance their new stadium: Gov. Nathan Deal.
Jim Walls at Atlanta Magazine has secured some documentsshowing "negotiators for Cobb County and the Braves considered funding packages that included up to $60 million in state tax credits on top of the $300 million in county funding." Braves executive vice president Mike Plant told Walls that the club already was looking at state tax credits for renovations at Turner Field, and there are a few to choose from:...

Sure Atlanta has never been able to sustain sell out crowds for Braves games, even in the playoffs, but what if Atlanta had a second team? The cross town rivalry will surely lead to more fans and more sellouts.

If one man gets his way, Turner Field won't get razed in 2017 after the Atlanta Braves move up to its new Cobb County stadium. Instead, a brand new baseball team - known as, wait for it ... the Atlanta Surge - would replace the longtime professional baseball club at the Ted.

The idea for the Surge comes from veteran Atlanta ad exec Mike McDonald, a self-proclaimed lifelong baseball fan, who wants to bring a second Major League Baseball team to metro Atlanta. And he wants the Surge's slogan to be the following: "Let's Turner Lemon into Lemonade!"

Traffic isn't bad enough in Atlanta yet and with the pending improvements to public transportation just decades away, I fully support this initiative - says man who works from home when not traveling.

That is the worst potential name for a sports team I have ever heard, and that includes New England Revolution.

Nah - if you're including soccer, I think the worst name is still the Kansas City Wiz.

A couple of college buds were visiting me in ATL for a Sox series in 2002. We got to The Ted good & early for BP, and to ensure we had a prime spot on the railing of the Chop House, the open-air restaurant/bar on a terrace overlooking right-center field. We were the only ones in the entire place when in strolled a couple of older gents in sport coats, trailed by a pair of notebook-toting zit-faced interns in sport coats jotting down their every word.

Much to our surprise, John Henry and Larry Lucchinio walked right up to us at the railing, and proceeded to attentively shoot the shit with three rabid Red Sox fans for about 10 minutes. The money shot from Lucchino: "We wanted to see what a real ballpark looks like." Nothing against Fenway, he said, but newer venues like Turner offered certain amenities and fan experiences, and they were hoping to incorporate some of those concepts into the forthcoming renovations back in Boston without altering the unique charm and history. This was just before they went forward with the Monster Seats that winter. The outfield food concourses added later at Fenway were largely modeled on those at Turner.

It's mind-boggling that just a dozen years later, Atlanta fans are being told -- with a straight face -- that Turner Field is now deemed an unsuitable venue for their Major League Baseball franchise.

Not a damn thing
A quick google search says it's parking/transportation/maintenance issues, but the take home message is exactly what I remember from the press conference: "we're not close enough to our wealthy season ticket holders"

EDIT: so yes I completely agree with you

Are the Braves really moving into a new park?  What's wrong with Turner field?

I think it had as much to do with the public financing of the new place as what's wrong with Turner. (although it does move them a bit closer to their ticket-purchase base.)

What's wrong with Turner Field is that the lease was up, and Kasim Reed would not bend over for the Braves.  I am pretty sure the playing conditions at the Ted would have been considered just fine had the tax breaks been there.

Turner is fine. It's about politics and money. The team didn't want to be beholden to city politicians and they want to profit from nearby real estate.

The scam is they are screwing over Cobb county taxpayers and the transportation issues will be a joke. For most, it will be worse to get to than Turner, at least on weeknights.

Someone has BINGO. Not just tax breaks, but other stuff too. Reed thought he could just stand off and play hardball and get what he wanted out of the Braves, because "what, are they gonna leave?", and the Braves answer to that was, "Fuck yeah, that's exactly what we're gonna do!"

Right, Braves called Reed's bluff. But Reed was outta cash, he'd just bent over for the new Falcons stadium.

Braves have not been honest with fans about transportation issues. Claims it will be easier to get to are crap. Sure it's closer for most, but the primary highway is already gridlocked.

It's irrelevant how close it is if you are moving at zero miles per hour.

The new stadium is closer to Cobb county base, but there are a ton of fans with in Gwinnett and North Fulton (where I am) too, and they are in no way any closer.  For me it has been possible to catch a game by hopping on to MARTA at the North Springs station and then get there via the train and shuttle bus.  It is going to be nearly impossible to drive over to the new place for an evening game unless I start 2-3 hours ahead of time.

TV money, TV money, TV money.

The Braves are locked into the worst TV contract in baseball for the next 15 years, that might mean $10 million in annual revenue. They reworked it recently for an extra couple hundred million, but the average annual value is still just about rock bottom in baseball from what I've heard.

They need more revenue and with Cobb County being all too eager to handout some corporate welfare, a shiny new park will help.
