I've searched and I've looked and I've looked and I've searched but I've yet to find a topic, or even that many posts, discussing Dan Patrick's post ESPN career radio show and TV simulcast. As a lurker I fear, FEAR, starting a new topic, but now that the show is on 9a-12a on CSN in New England he's going to start coming up a lot more.
Pros:
Format - Patrick has taken the unique route of taking his non-voice talent show crew and putting them on equal footing. I find that if you stick with the show they're more lovable than the host himself--even Seton, the Yankee fan. They are the voice of the actual fan instead of the media personality, when they get folks like Joe Montana in studio they are just as starstruck as we are... and we get to hear what it is really like. Also, in a spot of producing, they have each been given developed "personalities" which I can do without sometimes but there are certainly moments where these are some really entertaining guys you'd like to hang out with.
Anti-Big Media - Since leaving ESPN Patrick seems hell bent on exposing how business is now done in Bristol. Insight on how things used to be with he and Olbermann, heavy criticism about the network's (as he calls it, the mothership) inability to stay impartial while trying to make big bucks ("The Decision," the Texas Longhorn Network), and Patrick's overall civility with his guests are welcome changes to stock sports radio. At times the anti-ESPN rants, especially when they convince an ESPN personality on to the air, can be tediously self-righteous--"Is my name mentioned up there?"
Talent - As mentioned, I find Patrick to be incredibly civil yet still honest as a sports broadcaster. He also has great rapport with regular guests like Rich Eisen, Tony Dungy, and Reggie Miller (When he was on, he hasn't been in a year, something happened--any insight?) Speaking of Miller, he also makes me a fan of things I'm not, like the NBA, college basketball, and college football.
Odds and Ends - I also like how his soccer fan producer gets to plug his sport every once and awhile. As well as NASCAR and other sport outliers.
Cons:
Sox Ignorance - Patrick usually has great conversations with both Francona and Kevin Millar (Then again, who doesn't) but the rest of his Sox coverage is fairly dated. He just had Johnny Damon on this week (8/18/2011), and Dan really wanted to bring back the naked pull-up story. I'd love to hear Pedroia and the other modern Sox stars get some DP show love. As I said there is a Yankee fan on staff, so there is a lot more Yankee stuff, however, this includes the most amazing Jon Sterling lampooning I have ever heard. The Sterling and Waldman rants along might make the Dan Patrick Show a must listen for Sox fans raised in NY as I was.
Format - I love them, but I can easily see how the opinions of the non voice talent folks on this show could rub sports fans the wrong way. Especially Andrew "McLovin'" Perloff, the show blogger and overall dweeb. Part of his schtick is his overblown NFL opinions and if you don't find them funny or mildly interesting I'm sure you will hate him.
Alright, so give him a try and see what you think of his new show. Plus, when the show actually does host New England stars I will now have a topic I can lurk to find out what others thought of the interview. Because really, that's what I do.
