He is second in the league in walks with 50 (the guy ahead of him is four years older), I wonder how much he is expanding the zone and swinging at bad pitches because the league refuses to throw him strikes. I definitely don't think he was promoted too aggressively, I do think Volpe was promoted too aggressively because of the new draft pick rules if a player wins Rookie of the YearDo you guys think Jasson was maybe promoted a bit too aggressively? He obviously was crushing A+ pitching but had less than 200 PA. Edit: maybe he's just been unlucky so far, with a BABIP of 0.246. If he resumed his mid-.300 BABIP from a/A+ he'd maybe be right back to his previous battig levels, or close enough anyway to not be concerned.
I think whenever you sign a teenager this young, the developmental curve is not always straight to the top. Jasson also lost at least a year to Covid restrictions. We see test results for how Covid negatively affected high school students. I suspect the same logic can be applied to teenage professional baseball players. Huge learning curve, and then throw in cultural obstacles like learning to speak English. Dominguez might not reach majors until he is 23.Do you guys think Jasson was maybe promoted a bit too aggressively? He obviously was crushing A+ pitching but had less than 200 PA. He can fill up a box score. Moved to leadoff a few games back. That might be his best spot in the order.Today he is 2-4 with a BB, a HR, 4 SBs and 4 runs scored, now that's a full day. Up to 34 SBs now for the season in 366 ABs...
Yes, and Volpe has struggled at the plate. One could make the case that he was rushed. It seems like Pereira will get promoted after the 18th or 19th, which will give NY an extra year control on him, so possibly then Dominguez will go to AAA. He needs to be added to the 40 man after the season, I think he's a strong candidate to open the season with NY next year like Volpe did this year. Volpe spent most of last year in AA, promoted to AAA on Sept 2.
The new CBA encourages this, because if you have a consensus top 100 prospect who spends the entire season with the MLB team and they win Rookie of the Year, you get an extra high draft pick plus extra draft spending ability. Without this rule, IMO no way Volpe spends the entire season with NY this year and that's why I think Dominguez has a good chance to do so next year.Yes, and Volpe has struggled at the plate. This is what the Astros did with Jeremy Pena, who turned 25 in his rookie season as opposed to Volpe's 22 this year. That's a lot easier to do when you have Carlos Correa ahead of him on the depth chart though.Wouldn't a club have a better chance of turning out a ROY candidate if they promoted them less aggressively? Wait a little longer until you know the kid is ready and then put him on the starting roster to open the next season. It seems like even a super talented youngster could have trouble competing for that singular honor against a more seasoned and experienced rookie.
Obviously there are risks there because you might be wasting time that the kid could be producing at the major league level.
Also bunt once in a while, I figured he just couldn’t but the one I saw him try was beautiful. And with the new rules, he should look to steal basically everytime it’s possible.Volpe has to learn Rizzo’s two-strike approach to hitting. It doesn’t take a genius to lift his contact rate. The rookie rarely deviates from his big swing. I think back to Jeter, whose hitting approach favored up the middle and right field strokes. Times have changed from Jeter’s first year to today.
Thanks for your insights. Running hard out of the box is nice to hear. My wish is the Yankees let the kids play and become a faster team, even athletic and fast as Peraza, Pereira and Dominguez join Volpe in the lineup.Took in the Somerset Patriots vs Binghamton Rumble Ponies game today to see Dominguez and Acuna in person.
I was not impressed with Scuna at the plate at all. Had the same drip as his brother but really just made soft contact. Dominguez on the other hand, absolutely smoked two oppo line drives for base hits, the second one turned in to a hustle double. He really runs hard out of the box and stole 2 bases with ease.
The lineups for both teams were hot garbage with half of each lineup having sub .600 OPS. It was a 11:00 am start after a night game so that might just be guys getting off days.
Blade Tidwell for the Rumble Ponies looked pretty solid. Pitched in to the 8th with 7Ks and zero walks…. Sitting 96 all day.
Spencer Jones is fast too, 27 SBs in 87 games this year in high A. Fully agreed that this is the future for NY, if I had my way it would have been happening sooner. Thanks for your insights. Even Cabrera can be a useful piece of this coming era, assuming he figures out what big league pitchers did to him this year.Spencer Jones is fast too, 27 SBs in 87 games this year in high A. Fully agreed that this is the future for NY, if I had my way it would have been happening sooner.
I’m a Sox fan vacationing at the Jersey Shore this week. Was really hoping The Martian was Yankee prospect hype. Bad news… the kid looks to be a real player and problem for years to come. Thanks for your insights. Running hard out of the box is nice to hear. Does he stand out physically? He’s listed as 5-9 and 190 lbs.I’m a Sox fan vacationing at the Jersey Shore this week. Was really hoping The Martian was Yankee prospect hype. Bad news… the kid looks to be a real player and problem for years to come.
Super stocky but he really can move. And the opposite field hits were lasers. First one I believe as 0-2. Second one he came out of the box thinking two, kind of stumbled around first and just put it in to another gear. I thought he was out for sure.Does he stand out physically? Hitting .373 in August.4-5 with 3 doubles today, OPS up to .781 now. He has to be in contention for league player of the month, although ideally he’d be promoted before 9/1.
I don't get it.Should we change the thread title to "The Martian probably isn't coming"
I think because the team was refusing to call anyone up.I don't get it.
The refusal to promote other players is what drove my comment. At least Pereira and Peraza are coming up.I think because the team was refusing to call anyone up.
Do we think they just let him play every day in CF once Bader is grabbed by another team?Wow!!!!
Yeah, maybe him and Pereira split LF/CF so NY can get more of a defensive read on where they’ll fit.Do we think they just let him play every day in CF once Bader is grabbed by another team?
