Not sure how many might follow sailing, but this year's round-the-world Ocean Race is in progress (on Leg 4 from Itajaí, Brazil to Newport, RI). The race consists of 7 legs that cover about 40,000 miles and takes about 8 months to complete. They boats arrive in Newport (est.) 5/13. Newport is the only North American stopover.

There are 2 classes of boats in this year's race: the IMOCA 60-foot class, which is sailing around the world; and the 65-foot VO65 Class, which is racing only in legs 1, 6, and 7. Depending on conditions, these boats are capable of sailing over 600 miles/day (25+ knots). For the IMOCAs, there were qualifying races, with the top 5 teams competing:

  • 11th Hour Racing (USA), skippered by Charlie Enright
  • GUYOT Environment (Team Europe), co-skippered by Benjamin Dutreux & Rober Stanjek
  • Team Holcim (Switzerland), skippered by Kevin Escoffier
  • Team Malizia (Germany), skippered by Boris Herrmann
  • Biotherm (France), skippered by Paul Meilhat
The last time the race was conducted as the Volvo Ocean Race, and they stopped in Newport in 2018. They also stopped in 2015. Both times they had a very well organized Race Village at Fort Adams where you could take see the boats up close. Marvelous technology. We had a great time visiting.

I went down in 2018 and it was a blast. The boats really are incredible and I can’t wait to go again this weekend
