Let’s not clog the Patrice retirement thread with that discussion. Who is the next Captain?

I listed the three most likely choices in the poll, but maybe there’s someone that thinks Coyle or Carlo are in the running…

McAvoy checks all the boxes. The very first time I saw an on ice interview I knew that he was our future captain. If not for all that Marchand has done for this team over his long career, I’d think that Chucky is the obvious choice. If management feels that it’s Marchand’s turn next then I’m ok with it.

Marchand has the licking thing and may not be a round that long
McAvoy hasn't been around for that long yet (although obviously more than Gretzky and Yzerman had been)
Pastrnak is my vote. In the middle on being here, elite, good in community, signed 8 year extension this year.

It’ll probably be Marchand for his last two years, then McAvoy. I could also see a Middleton - Bourque scenario where they split it.

I think it's Marchand. Driving the culture is obviously very important to the organization and Marchand is the obvious link to the era that started with Chara. I wouldn't sleep on Pastrnak as being the next up instead of McAvoy.

The only reason not to give it to Marchand is longevity. I think it's him, maybe McAvoy or Pastrnak if they think one of them is ready and they want to turn the page and transition to the next core.

I think it's Mac. He's been here 6 years, so while he seems young, he's a vet; he's signed for a while and is likely their next target to be a Bs lifer, and has shown leadership chops in the mold of Z and Bergy already.

That said, it wouldn't totally shock me if Marchand got it for however many years he has left or they split the captaincy. I can't see anyone else having a chance at this point.

I think it'll be Chuckie. In my view, he can further improve his game and being C will encourage that growth across the board, on-ice and leadership both on and off. It feels as though it fits...

Are you sure that’s not the 100th anniversary patch that they’re going to wear this season?

Also, hockey feed is completely click bait garbage.

Not to Zapruder film this too much but the commemorative patches usually are on the right (when wearing a jersey) and the captaincy letters go on the left.

FWIW he was at Warrior during dev camp so it's not out of the realm of possibility they grabbed a discreet photo shoot at that time. Especially since it appears they've known for quite some time.

I just can’t wrap my mind around hockey feed actually scooping some real news.

Between here and everywhere.
FWIW - old friend Amalie Benjamin wrote a great article about Bergeron and Marchands friendship at the beginning of the playoffs.

Marchand talks a lot about what he's learned about being a leader form Bergy, and how important it was to him to become a part of the leadership group when Bergeron got the C.

My heart says Marchand. He was there for the last Cup. He learned from Chara, and then Bergeron. He's the longest tenured B (assuming Krejci is done, too).

It has to be Marchand, even if it's for a few years. Bergy only had it for three, and Brad has earned the right to wear it. Chucky vs Pasta will be the real decision after, but they'll get their time with the C. I would also imagine management would first talk to him, asking him what he would prefer the team to do with him in what is hopefully a reset year. While the math would change if he asked to be possibly traded to try to get another cup, to me he seems like a dude that would prefer to stay in Boston and with the team. He's got his Cup, his paydays, and he gets to finish his career in a place he loves and that loves him. I think it's an easy call

Well deserved. I can't think of another player, in any sport really, who has grown more as a leader and person on the field/ice, than Brad Marchand. He won't ever shake the national narrative from his earlier years, but those of us who watch him day in and day out, and especially his teammates (I am sure) recognize it.

All hail the rat king.
Off topic, but does anyone remember the stories of “king rat” in the old Garden. Supposedly a giant rodent that lived on discarded popcorn & hot dogs? Those rumors were right up there with the monkey that escaped from the circus.

Ken Linesman?

I used to watch Celtics from the top of the balcony and there was rarely a game where you wouldn’t see a rat on one of the beams over your head or in front of you.

I believe that was a story written by Bud Collins of the Globe.
