The part about him dating Blake Lively and being Shine's dad was hilariousI have to say I really enjoyed Russillo on The Town Rewatchable. Obviously has the Boston connection and he is really funny too. LOL'd more than a few times.

Same, but how do you make a best Boston movies list and a best Bank Heist movies list and somehow not have Friends of Eddie Coyle on either of them?I have to say I really enjoyed Russillo on The Town Rewatchable. I hope they mentioned the single most underrated and funny line in the movie, “We just stole more money from the Red Sox than Jack Clark!”.
I had people turning around at me in the London theatre I was in because I was laughing so hard.

Friends of Eddie Coyle is the most Boston movie I've ever seen. Every scene drips with Boston-ness. They just don't watch many movies made before 1983.I forgot that was a Boston movie. They did differentiate between a movie set in Boston vs capturing the essence of Boston.
Or the part about her marrying Steve Levy and having season tickets to the Bruins. This is almost a relistenable just to go back and catch all of Russillo's jokes. The part about him dating Blake Lively and being Shine's dad was hilarious
"Ya think you're BETTAH than me, King George," was an all time line by Chris Ryan.Holy shit. I love Chris Ryan, but he was the kid in back just giggling as the bigger boy he looked up to talked. Russillo absolutely crushed this.
This is probably the wrong forum for this, but the movies you talk about form the film version of Boston we have today, I agree. Friends of Eddie Coyle is the real Boston of the late 60's and 70's, with the old central artery before the big dig, the combat zone in full swing, the old Garden and the Bruins, and mobsters working with the FBI. It's amazing how much of that movie was reality in retrospect.Friends of Eddie Coyle is a different Boston to what those guys (and I) think of as Boston. Other than the scenes at the Garden, it doesn’t pound you over the head with the Boston tropes. I’m listening to the podcast now and a good example is nobody in FoEC would have ever dreamed of getting a zip code tattoo with the Irish flag. That kind of gratuitous paddywhackery just wasn’t necessary when your parents and everybody else’s came from the old country.
(As an aside, the name Fergus Colm is the worst thing about the Town, nobody from Ireland would have a name like that.)
The Town actually feels in some ways like it harkens back to 90s Boston, before really hardcore gentrification, which I dug because that’s when I used to hang out in Boston for a month every summer with my dad and uncle. Oh yeah, townies, those were my uncle’s neighbours. I remember those guys. They were gruff and a little scary until you got to know them, then they’d invite us over for pizza and a ballgame because they paid for NESN and my uncle didn’t.
I never listened to these movie recaps, just Bills podcast, I have been missing out. What other movies did they do that I should listen to? Did I just like this one because it was about Boston?
In honestly have enjoyed every one i've listened to.I never listened to these movie recaps, just Bills podcast, I have been missing out. What other movies did they do that I should listen to? Did I just like this one because it was about Boston?
I would think that if you went back in the catalog for the show, you could pick and choose based on the movies you've seen and/or enjoyed. I subscribe to the feed but tend to skip episodes if it's a movie I haven't seen. Wouldn't really matter if the episode was recommended as good overall if I can't follow the conversation because I'm unfamiliar with the subject. It's not as though they get that into describing the plot and otherwise reviewing the movie. They tend to dive right in assuming everyone knows the material.I never listened to these movie recaps, just Bills podcast, I have been missing out. What other movies did they do that I should listen to? Did I just like this one because it was about Boston?
Fennessey rubbed me the wrong way when I first started listening to him. Now, I never want to miss a Big Picture episode. He's interesting, really informed, and extremely sharp and fast with his wit. My opinion on him has changed dramatically. Fennessey and Simmons together are a tremendous pair because they are so completely different.Fennessey is best in doses, but he’s good with a foil like Bill or Ryan that’ll lighten him up.
Yeah you need someone like Fennesey with Simmons because you want someone in the room that actually knows what they're talking about.Fennessey rubbed me the wrong way when I first started listening to him. Dazed and Confused was excellent as was The Natural.I never listened to these movie recaps, just Bills podcast, I have been missing out. What other movies did they do that I should listen to? Did I just like this one because it was about Boston?
Man, you ain't kidding. I listened to this for the first time earlier today and I probably laughed harder during it than any other Rewatchables. The Wilfrid Brimley stuff had me dying. "You know what she finds Mitch? Heartbreak."The Firm was an all time great Rewatchables episode.
That one is just so funny. I vividly remember walking through the city listening to that, cracking up at the brilliance and inanity of it. I don't often vividly remembering podcasts but that one is a moment.Man, you ain't kidding. I listened to this for the first time earlier today and I probably laughed harder during it than any other Rewatchables. The Wilfrid Brimley stuff had me dying. "You know what she finds Mitch? Heartbreak."
No Country For Old Men with Bill Hader was really good too.
I'm going to guess that Simmons hasn't watched more than a dozen total films made before 1980. And two of those are Godfather I&II. He's not a film buff, he's a pop-culture fan.I just listened to the Good Will Hunting Rewatchables* and Fennessey and Ryan both mention Friends of Eddie Coyle as an all-time Boston movie, which Simmons never acknowledges. So, in other words, I'm pretty sure Simmons has never seen Friends of Eddie Coyle.
*And then spent like 20 minutes looking up flights to Boston. Over here feeling nostalgic right now.
Seems like the SVP podcast is a no go apparently, PMT will be interesting though. It seems like things are a bit better between them and Simmons. I'm guessing he rightfully hates Portnoy though so that might be a sticking point. That's awesome. I really like Russillo and he's extremely good with Simmons -- I've liked him since his Boston sports radio days, and I'm happy he can keep doing this. I'll be bummed if he doesn't keep up his monthly(ish) pod with SVP or if he can't go on PMT because he has great chemistry (obviously) with SVP and he's so good with Big Cat and PFT. I suspect he'll be allowed to keep those up because Simmons isn't shy about letting his talent moonlight, but this is just great.
?Russillo couldn’t hold it together for 2 minutes on what was setting up to be a great troll
90 minutes on each candidateThat he was starting a political podcast akin to what the Pod Save America guys did last election.
Yeeeeep. That was a GLARING omission. Such a great movie. It's my #3 Boston movie.Same, but how do you make a best Boston movies list and a best Bank Heist movies list and somehow not have Friends of Eddie Coyle on either of them?
Yeeeeep. That was a GLARING omission. Such a great movie. It's my #3 Boston movie.
Any episode of The Rewatchables with Shea Serrano is must listen for me. The recent Bloodsport drop is fantastic.
How has nobody mentioned Mallory Rubin's role in the Top Gun episode? She was hilarious.
The Top Gun Rewatchables is peak Rewatchables. This is exactly what I think it should be. A very popular, rewatchable movie that is always on cable and a bunch of people who love it breaking it down.
There were so many funny parts but my favorite was after Mallory was talking about what Charlie might have done after Maverick left, Bill says "good thing Fennessey wasn't in on this one. We;d have to drag his body out of the room like Goose getting pulled from the ocean"
Costner was really awesome, agreed.
And Top Gun Recappables is definitely peak everything. That was an incredibly entertaining and hilarious listen, I was gleeful the entire time. I might even listen to that again, which I have literally never done for a podcast. Simmons, Rubin, Ryan, and Concepcion is a MURDERERS row grouping. Cumulative OPS is definitely about 4.000.
And Shea is hit or miss for me. He obviously can be very funny but I don't think he adds much beyond "That was awesome" or "This is the best thing ever"They need to include Rubin on more Rewatchables podcasts, she's great. I've always felt it's a little weird that they usually only include women on the panel for the romcom/chick flick episodes.
I searched "Top Gun" on this page. Guess all of the conversation regarding the pod occurred on page seven. Mea culpa. And Shea is hit or miss for me. He obviously can be very funny but I don't think he adds much beyond "That was awesome" or "This is the best thing ever"
What, getting your dad to pay for your grad school? Dude was on the Herald at like 25, that is astonishingly little dues-paying by old media standards. Maybe he's embraced it, but if he hasn't for those reasons that is incredibly weak. Superintendent in a posh MA suburb is a virtual 1%ers job, and Papa Simmons had it. Mom wasn't missing for much either, since she could help send him to Greenwich Country Day.This should be interesting: View: https://twitter.com/jmkliegman/status/1160934017056817152?s=19
Simmons strikes me as a guy who expects every young writer to go through the same shit he did, so forcing him to give young writers reasonable pay and benefits may be more than he can bear. But maybe working with so many young kids has made him more "woke."
