But by all reports the Sox were listening on Paxton.
yes, but the sox would not trade him just because, Paxton has value to a team that is not in the seller like the mets.... if someone was to offer some stupid package for him then fine... but no need to trade him just because fans want the sox to DO SOMETHING

This is almost worse than the night I stayed up listening to the car radio until midnight, only to find out all the Red Sox did was get Greg Swindell

Sure, and they have leverage. If they don't move him they can QO him and get draft pick compensation. They aren't getting "nothing" by hanging on to him, and if they can't get the value they want it makes sense to say no.

It's not DO SOMETHING from my perspective, it is cash in on value if it is a seller's market. If they don't extend Paxton and let him walk then this is a total fail.

What if Paxton contributes to a deep postseason run?

They can offer him the QO, that's worth something. As is his value to a team that is 2.5 games out of the playoffs.

Then it isn't value.
Yeah but this would be Bloom’s MO… he likes taking chances on guys that cost nothing and hope they can fix the guy.

kinda of disheartening that the Sox didn’t do anything… I get it… guys coming off the IL… we are close and I hate letting opportunities pass.

Like Schwarber did in 2021? Good, I guess? Paxton is 6 years younger than Verlander. Did he not have similar value? Would you not have driven him to the airport for the same package?
Yeah, a repeat of 2021 would be awesome. The Sox were two wins away from the World Series and the playoffs are a roll of the dice. And do we know that someone offered that package for Paxton?

I'm actually not too sad about missing out on Flaherty, too many walks. I would've been good with E-Rod, though (maybe it still happens!)

Making the ALCS is just "Good, I guess" now? If you can only enjoy sports if your team wins a championship, you're going to be pretty sad 29/30 of the time.

We don't. I'm asking who had more value, Paxton or Verlander, and whether we'd have been good with a similar package.

Verlander is also under contract & heavily financially subsidized for the next year or two.

Verlander has 1.5 years (2.5 if he is good) of team control. They aren't the same thing.

I'd be happier if they traded Paxton for the Verlander package, so by definition, I'm ok with them not winning a title.

2021 was very fun and successful season, so yes, if keeping Paxton can help us replicate that I'd much rather do that.

MLB Network just said E-Rod had already been offered a QO so he can’t be offered one again, meaning DET ain’t gettin squat.

Here's the thing: They have a shot at the postseason, and now they have to hope that they can get something from all the guys coming off injuries.

It's a choice we'll have to live with

Doing nothing should not have been an option. If Bloom didn't think this team can make the playoffs, trade Paxton and Duvall and see what you can get. If he believed in the team, he needed to add. Not adding while others did makes the Sox worse and we have nothing to show for it.

One is not under contract past a handful more starts, so no, they don’t have similar value at all.

I would have been happy if they traded Paxton/Duvall or both for a haul….I would have been happy if they traded farm depth for impending free agents who could help this year for a playoff run.

Personally, I think doing nothing was the worst option (and yes I consider trading for Kolten Wong nothing)

Or both are wrong and they make the playoffs anyway with guys getting healthy and not spending a dime in prospect capital.

It is a lousy choice. We can't change it, but none of us has to like it and the media needs to be all over Bloom. He made a choice and it should cost him his job if it doesn't work. Inaction while the Jays, Astros, Rays, and Angels got better reduces the Sox chances of making the playoffs.
