Trade Rumors Are Putting David Price In A Bad Mood.

"I mean, obviously I think about it," Price said. "That's why I've been in a bad mood the last week and a half. I think about it. You guys know that. And it's nothing I really want to talk about. I don't have an answer for you guys. I don't know where I'm going. I don't know when I'm going. So there's nothing I can really comment on."

More seriously, Olney thinks we could see Price traded in the next few weeks.

Olney wrote: "The expectation of rival officials is that sometime in the days ahead, some team is going to call Rays GM Andrew Friedman with the right offer, with enough pitching included to fill Tampa Bay's organizational need."

So where does he end up?  The Dodgers?  Angels?  Cardinals?  Does Ben shock the world and package Webster, de la Rosa, Betts and Cecchini for him in a vain hope to save the 2014 season through... um... not more hitting?

If he really doesn't want to be traded, how about a nice fat pay cut? Only way he's staying in a Ray's uni.

This is exactly right. The team has tried many times to extend him and he has rebuffed them repeatedly. You don't get to wear the glorious ray on your sleeve AND get paid top dollar. Sorry. He's always known the deal, so stop whining and making a spectacle of it. You never heard Shields pulling that.

I hope something really bizarre goes down, like he gets traded to a team no one expects, let's say Houston, for prospects. Analysts begin to speculate this is the first in a series of moves. And they're right. The Astros acquired David Price as part of a three team deal, that somehow halfway fell apart at the last minute, and needs to be restructured. The front offices are totally mum about it, and rumors circulate that Price is going to be on the move again. The Astros vehemently deny it. And yet, they hold him out of the rotation, for three weeks, and the deal doesn't materialize. Desperate to not lose Price to free agency, the Astros place him on trade waivers. Finally, after weeks of speculation, the last place Yankees, who have lost 28 of their last 35 games, claim David Price and acquire him for some middling prospects. Price, however, doesn't recover from the time off and swirling rumors, and goes 0-6 with a 24.97 ERA down the stretch.

In the offseason, no one is quite sure what to do with Price. Even Price isn't sure of his value. The Yankees tender him a 1 year, $16M deal, and he accepts. It's viewed as a "make good" contract.

Except Price doesn't make good. He starts the year off 0-7, gets shelled in ways not even imaginable, and develops a tendency to start airmailing pitches to the backstop several times per inning. The problem gets worse with runners in scoring position.

The Yankees attempt to send Price to the minors to get straightened out, but he refuses the assignment in a massive media shitstorm, in which he insists he's earned enough respect to figure himself out at the major league level. The Yankees begrudgingly keep him in their rotation.

After a game in which Ortiz hits 4 home runs and drives in 9 off of Price, Giradi is asked why he left Price out there to take such a beating. Giradi replies "how else is he going to figure this shit out?" Price files a grievance with the players union, but it never materializes. In his next start against Tampa, Price uncorks a wild pitch that sails into the dugout and strikes Joe Maddon. The camera attempts to pan away from the carnage, but winds up sitting on the image of a shattered pair of dorky glasses in a pool of blood.

Price is found guilty of turning the greatest genius ever in the history of baseball into a vegetable. He is banned for life. Brandon Workman smiles.

But...but...Maddon told me I was "special" for the Rays!

All this hate for Price is absurd, if he were on the Sox, people would love his attitude.

He's an elite pitcher, he deserves to get $23M+/year. He's in the same tier as Kershaw and Felix. He's got a perpetual chip on his shoulder and uses that to his advantage.

So, he'll probably wind up traded to the Yankees for Adam Warren and Mason Williams and we can all wallow in our own misery for the next decade.

At first I thought this was tongue in cheek.  On what basis is he in the same class as Kershaw and Felix?  Just a quick WAR comparison to start with:

Price: 2.5, 4.4, 4.8, 4.3, 3.9, 1.3
Felix: 4.5, 6.0, 5.9, 4.7, 5.5, 6.3
Kershaw: 2.8, 6.5, 5.4, 6.6, 4.5, 4.1

So in the last 6 years, Price's best year would be Felix' 5th best and Kershaw's 4th best. And Price is older than both of them.

I see that you've used FanGraph's WAR for comparison. In that case, Price is closer to Jon Lester than Felix or Kershaw.

Lester: 3.1, 4.3, 3.2, 3.5, 5.4, 6.2

Like ghoff's numbers, they read from 2014 to 2009.

You find it odd that people dislike a mouthy player on a rival team? Of course they'd like him if he was on the Sox. That doesn't mean we can't dislike him when he's not and it's not absurd to do so.

I was about to add Lester's numbers for another comparison but left them out.  No one has ever claimed that Lester is in that class, and I agree that Price is closer to Lester than those guys.

I think he's a headcase that couldn't handle the pressure of a big market or fans who really get into the game and on the players. So I hope he goes to the Phillies.

After all, Price mouthed off about Ortiz waiting to see if his second homer in Game 2 of the ALDS was deemed fair before running the bases in an obvious bit of sour grapes, apologized publicly afterward for overreacting, called Ortiz to do so and then, inexplicably, plunked Ortiz in retaliation in their first at bat (I think) in 2014.

What about that makes sense?  I mean, I can see being annoyed with Ortiz for not running out of the box, especially given Ortiz's slow home run trot.  But I can also see Ortiz not wanting to start to run the bases without knowing the ruling.  And more to the point, what were those apologies about if Price was still pissed off enough to hit Ortiz months later?

I dislike Price as much as anyone, but is this anything more than wishcasting?

Not that there's anything wrong with that if that's all it is...

And then, on top of all that, he cops a protector of the game attitude with the press after it all.

And rips Ortiz for calling it a "war" when he clearly meant it in a sports sense and was not equating it with actual wars fought by the armed forces.

Wishcasting. Price is 6 or 7 years too young to be a Philly.

Cardinals or Dodgers are really the only teams that make sense at the moment unless Price has changed his mind about signing long term in Seattle. Which is disheartening for AL East fans because it certainly means the Rays will get someone good in return. I would imagine Pederson will be in play from LA.

EDIT: Actually, maybe the Giants are in play on this? With Kyle Crick going to Tampa?

Dave Cameron has been beating the Taveras for Price and Zobrist drum for the last couple days. I can buy it but god, I would hate to see it happen.

Price dealing a shut out today against the Pirates.  How about pull him from the mound and tell him he might be dealt at any moment?  And then tell him about an hour later that the deal fell through!  Bwahahahaha!

Trade rumors are apart of the game unless, wait, does David Price think that David Price is bigger than the, wait for it, game?

Remember when Shea Hillenbrand said, "Then trade me, faggot!"?

At least he hasn't gone that far.

I'd have to think Escobar and/or Susac would have to be in play as well.

Yeah, no way Crick is enough to be the centerpiece of a Price deal, let alone the only piece. The bullpen rumblings are getting pretty loud with Crick lately (though I recognize that prospect hounds have been pretty quick to shout "bullpen!" lately).

And props to Hank S's post above - an enjoyable scenario that would be indeed!

Yes he criticized Ortiz for calling it a war, and then called it a "battle."  He's a pompous assidiot.

“This is a game. This is a game,” Price repeated. “We have troops, men and women, that are fighting for our freedom and making sure that we stay safe that I guess could be prepared for a real war. And that’s not acceptable; this is not a war, by no means. This is a game that we play and sometimes it definitely gets heated in that battle, but to compare it to a war, he probably just didn’t have the right choice of words right there.”

But that means you like one team more than another team! That's not fair! It seems really hypocritical, if you don't understand anything about anything.

DrewDawg thinks he's bigger than the game.
