Francona had a unique relationship with his players. He poked fun at them, and vice versa. Francona and Pedroia were especially close. Francona thought that ESPN's John Clayton, the late, great Hall of Fame football writer, looked like Pedroia -- because they were both thin and balding. So, Tito arranged to have Clayton, pretending to be Pedroia, videotape a pep talk to the team before a big game. The whole team, including Pedroia, exploded in laughter.

The Yankees are somehow going to finish 4-5 games better than this team. Just a gigantic fail.
I'll take the over. It's about to be 5 in a few minutes, and Baltimore (thanks to us rolling over for the Rays) still will have something to play for through Saturday.

Maybe we'll beat their B team on Sunday.

If they continue to have the fan get together in Springfield during the winter with John Henry , Kennedy etc THAT could be interesting. They got booed last time and not much has changed in the standings.
I fully expect the new POBO to make some sort of big splash (trade, free agent signing) very quickly. If they do something that actually significantly improves the major league roster the mood of the fan base and the narrative surrounding the team will change. If they only improve around the edges and promise a brighter future by hyping prospects, i.e. more of the same, the boos may rain down in Springfield again next January.

Was that the crypt keeper? Would love to see it.

Wish there was video of this!

There were so many laughs, and victories, in eight years in Boston. And yet if anything did go wrong with his team or one of his players, Francona was the first to confront the problem. No one could take a tense, stressful situation and smooth it over better than Francona. One night, a Japanese reporter, in a packed interview room after a difficult loss at Fenway, tried to ask a question in English about Daisuke Matsuzaka but struggled to find the right words.

When he was done, Francona said, "You're from Western Pennsylvania, aren't you?"

It better be a very solid starter or a big time right handed power bat or they're going to get booed. These half measures aren't working.

Their magic number is 1 over the Rays for the division, or will be as soon as their game goes final (5-1 in the 8th). And if the DodgersBraves win tonight, their magic number is 1 for HFA throughout the playoffs. Very likely the last three games will be meaningless for everyone.

...and to think the front office was shocked when they were booed at the Winter Weekend in Springfield. They did not boo enough.

I took advantage of that offer last night. You can count on at least one good thing coming out of going to a game; last night Jake Peavy was in Autograph Alley and he graciously let my daughter try on his 2013 World Series ring. Made her night.
Dr. Charles Steinberg let me try on his 2004, 2007, and 2013 at a season ticket holder event once. I don't care what others say, the Dentist is all right by me.

Masochist here. Went to the game with the family. I didn’t expect them to win but I didn’t expect them to roll over and die either. Pathetic performance tonight.

I’m as guilty as anyone of giving a shit about the Yankees, which I really shouldn’t. But it’s hard to see them appear to put at least something of a premium on continuing to compete, while the Red Sox give off the appearance that they have just quit. They were as low as can be, but at least gave their fans something to enjoy occasionally for a month. Oh well, better draft pick maybe.

At least I hope the Sox have just quit, because the alternative — that the new GM is inheriting the least competitive team in baseball — would be a bummer.

Went 3 for 3 on the thread title, but at least my seats were good.

Honestly, the game sucked enough, but the concessions seemed to be in shutdown mode too which sucked. No peanuts left, no sausages left, no chicken tenders left, half the sodas were out. Saw one package of peanuts 5 feet to the left of where I was ordering and asked if I could buy those but was told I'd have to go wait in a whole new line in order to buy them. This after standing in 3 lines just to get the food promised as part of the ticket package (first line wouldn't fulfill the ticket offer, even though they had the hot dogs and soda, second line was out of hot dogs, third line finally honored the offer AND had hot dogs).

Just shit on and off the field tonight.

Yeah, all the service people at the stadium (except for the beer guys working the stands) seemed really sullen. And what's up with the food at Fenway anyway? There's nothing but crappy hot dogs and fries. It seems like they've really dialed down the effort on the food choices in recent years.

At least all the Rays fans sitting around me had a nice time.

Maybe the focus on hot dogs was tied into the late season ticket/food packages. Or, did they just stop stocking the other food options a few weeks back?

I suppose it's possible that as inflation has bitten hard fewer fans have been willing to pony up $ for the more expensive menu options, so they were getting de-emphasized.

There are no excuses for the experience Hendu for Kutch reported in what are supposed to be fan appreciation days as the season ends.
