Top sixth, Pedroia out at home, 4-unassisted, with the batter getting a fielders choice. Fielders choice I got just fine, but holy cow, unassisted out at home by Altuve??
Last night's Ortiz Grand Slam was the first in the postseason and 8th time in the RetroSheet canon (but probably overall) that four pitchers received earned runs on one play.

The second set of commentry (KMOX) mentions "you can't do that" when Carpenter first looks like he is shaping to drop it. And that was my understanding too (can intentionally drop it). Anyone know the rule around that ?zougwa said:Cardinals turn a 5-8 fielder's choice.

(l) An infielder intentionally drops a fair fly ball or line drive, with first, first and second, first and third, or first, second and third base occupied before two are out. The ball is dead and runner or runners shall return to their original base or bases;Lowrielicious said:The second set of commentry (KMOX) mentions "you can't do that" when Carpenter first looks like he is shaping to drop it. Absolutely incredible. One for the books.soxhop411 said:Pit just hit into a double play ON A WALK.

Well, not "hit" exactly.
Second and third, one out. Batter walks. Snider, on second, apparently thought bases were loaded and starts toward third. Catcher throws to second, he's picked off, and runner on third breaks for home and gets tagged out as well

Didn't watch a minute of that World Series. Thanks for showing me it's been done.Zedia said:For one, Johnny Damon in the 2009 WS:

Usually anytime someone gets two bases on a stolen base some sort of error is involved. As this been done anytime since the dead ball era?

Harrison is a kick in the ass baseball player. When he made the ASG, I said wha? But, watching him in a recent series against the Giants, he does everything. Hit, hit for some power, play multiple positions, and play them well, excellent baserunner, as in that vid. Second best player on the Pirates?DrewDawg said:
It was mentioned somewhere when I was reading about Pedroia's SBs that Josh Harrison did it earlier this season as well.
I think this is it. Not quite the same, but fun to watch: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/63817564/v34873141/pitcol-harrison-steals-and-escapes-rundown/?query=harrison%2Bbaserunning
He overslid second, got up, ran towards third and escaped a rundown. Credited with 2 SBs.

What would happen if the Umpire overthrew the pitcher, and the runner advanced to 2nd base?
Presumably the ball had been declared dead for some reason before the umpire handled it, at which point it's a dead ball (nobody can advance) until the pitcher has the ball on the mound and the umpire calls "Play". Even if, say, the ump called time to inspect the ball and then handed it back to the catcher, and the catcher overthrew the pitcher, nobody could advance on the throw:geoduck no quahog said:I recall seeing the umpire throw the ball back to the pitcher, with a man on first, during a Sox game last week (I think Workman's).

5.11 After the ball is dead, play shall be resumed when the pitcher takes his place on the pitcher’s plate with a new ball or the same ball in his possession and the plate umpire calls “Play.” The plate umpire shall call “Play” as soon as the pitcher takes his place on his plate with the ball in his possession.
