Here are the games this coming weekend. Going to be a high of 6 degrees in KC -- that has to favor KC, right?

I picked Miami. I think they can run it in the cold and KC has been playing like shit.

Peacock?! Putting ANY NFL playoff game on a subscription streaming channel is BS.

https://www.si.com/nfl/2024/01/08/nfl-playoff-game-on-peacock-angers-fans-chiefs
I know people are upset by this but none of us should really be surprised. Goodell has one job - to aggressively grow revenue and that mentality pretty much governs everything they do.

I’m kind of curious from the NBC angle. Have to think that most people who aren’t already subscribers will just cancel after the game but they’re clearly banking on some sticking around due to liking the content or being too lazy to cancel.

And they obviously needed a compelling matchup to test this strategy on so we’ll see.

Miami hasn’t won a cold weather playoff game since the early 1970s. I’d be stunned if they won this weekend.
Plus the injuries to the defense.

Miami needs a flat out miracle to win with this mangled roster in 0 degree weather. On the road in a not so easy place to play.

Do I have it right that the Dolphins will be down SIX starters from just their D alone? That is brutal...

I blame NBC more than the NFL. NBC doesn't have to do this, they could make a gazillion dollars just leaving it on NBC. The game will likely be, across all of NBC's platforms and broadcasts, a top 2-3 highest rated production for the year. They decided that wasn't good enough, and are taking it a step further to collect another $3 from millions of viewers who won't be able to help themselves to drive subscriptions to their shitty stream service. And then of course a large chunk will forget to cancel so they collect even more. It's going to work and then next year ESPN is going to put a high profile game behind the ESPN+ paywall. And so on.

I'm going to hate myself at 8:00 on Saturday when I grit my teeth and yell into my Xfinity remote "Peacock!" and click the fucking subscribe button. Guess I can watch hundreds of hours of Jack McCoy before I cancel.

I would be curious how many forgotten subscriptions they get versus people who call their kids to figure out how to stream this thing off streamseast and the like.

Being a finance guy I'd love to see what their cash flow model on this was and the assumptions used. If the $110M is an incremental cost above what it would be to broadcast OTA, I wonder what their added revenue assumption is: $6 one time * X, $72 annual monthly payments from lazy people * X. The average wild card audience last year was around 28M people and Peacock currently has 30 million subscribers so how many people are already subscribers or will let the NFL pound sand? Also, I assume they'll be showing ads during the game but will the revenue be less than if the game was OTA? I would imagine advertisers would push back on paying OTA rates if the eyeballs on the game are most likely going to be lower.

Good point. In the other thread I said I wasn't going to pay for it, but my son who is home on break will probably be pirating it and if I'm home I'll watch with him.

People are losing their minds about Peacock but Amazon has had the Thursday night game for 2 seasons.

How is this any different? I’m not saying it’s not annoying, but games have been streaming on streaming services for a while now. Even some college games are Peacock exclusive.

The teams playing Thursday are still available in their local market and this is a playoff game

A few reasons, in addition to this being a playoff game of national interest. For one, so many people already subscribe to Amazon independent of watching TNF games. I think only a quarter of that subscription base already subscribes to Peacock, and a lot of people wouldn’t subscribe if not for the playoff game being aired on Peacock.

Also, if you happen to live in a local market for one of the teams, FOX airs the TNF game.

It being a playoff game is obviously the driver of the anger over this. TNF is somehow considered “bonus football” by many, but a playoff game is considered essential viewing, and people are rightly pissed about the money grab. But ultimately, you’re right. We’re only getting more of this going forward.

Peacock is a good service with a ton of content.

And people can sign up and cancel. That is an option. For 6 whole dollars.(a venti iced coffee)

People are acting like they have to watch the game in a dungeon and then be trapped there for 3 months with only water and gruel. It’s pathetic.

Local markets are still carrying the game but I agree on the playoff aspect. I think the other thing is that there are probably a lot more people that already have Prime so there aren't as many people that would have to find a way to watch.

It's obviously not the $6 cost - I spend a lot more than that on meaningless shit. For me it's just not worth going through setting up another streaming service to hate watch one game when there's a ton of football on this weekend anyway. It's also just my own little way of saying fuck off to the move towards taking previously broadcast network sports to streaming services.

That’s fair. But it’s not like signing up for the Cock is akin to climbing Everest. It takes approximately 52 seconds.

Money runs sports. This is another example of money running sports. Dog bites man. But it’s not like signing up for a streaming service is in any way difficult. People do it all the time.

I could have sloughed off not watching the Peacock game, but would have preferred two "normal network" games on Saturday and two on Sunday. By the third game on any day, I'm usually asking my wife if she wants the family room TV and I can watch the upstairs one, or not (I'm such a nice guy).

So far, I think the NFL was the only remaining league with all playoff games on "open TV".

The networks, and the NFL is going along will test using the services to broadcast games and things will change from there.
This is better than having an entire series on cable (TBS, TNT, et al). At least here you pay $6 to watch the game and get a month of other stuff you may like. BTW the whole "forget to cancel" is silly. As soon as it kicks in and you pay, cancel it right away.

For most of us, it's the principle of it. Regular cable or fios TV has gotten quite expensive as it is, so getting nickeled and dimed for a playoff game is pouring salt in the open wound. So fuck them, I won't do it. I like NFL, but those aren't my teams playing so I'll either follow on a pirated version or just check gamecast every now and then.

I do think think we'll see more of this going forward, not because people cave to this idea by itself, but that more and more people are cord-cutting getting pissed off at regular cable prices. The trend seems to be going more toward subscription services and "Choose your own channel" type deals that are starting to pop up on web-based TV packages. So as that happens, paying for a playoff game wouldn't seem as bad since you're not already getting bent over the table on a standard cable package.

if the dolphins had beat buffalo last week the would be playing in buffalo this weekend.i dont think they blew anything.its cold in kc but its way colder in buffalo
If the Dolphins beat Buffalo last week it wouldn't matter how cold it is in Buffalo because Miami would have won the division and would be hosting Buffalo in Miami this weekend.

It’s also not colder in Buffalo this weekend than KC. It’s still cold but it won’t be 0F or in the single digits like KC. It’s a classic plains arctic intrusion.

Well, I think we can officially say Schefter is full of shit when it comes to his sources in the officiating department:

View: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10103081-schefter-brad-allens-referee-crew-expected-to-get-downgraded-for-2024-nfl-playoffs

Turn around and 6 out of 7 of the officials on Allen's crew will work in some capacity this weekend. The only one who isn't is a rookie and is ineligible to work in the postseason per the NFLRA CBA.

Note: Officials who grade in the bottom tier of the league are ineligible for postseason assignments including as alternates

Ooh.. game in KC may not be a sellout. (Or the "Get In" price is relatively cheap).

The lake effect snow machine likely gets fired up Sunday morning and makes the game in Buffalo a fun snow game with potential heavy, heavy rates.

Holy cow, you're not kidding. This far out and you can get midfield for $125.

That's really surprising. I know this team is somewhat frustrating but I thought those fans were kind of rabid.

A few of my colleagues have been watching ticket prices, and the weather, as they try to decide to go or not. WC tickets have dropped drastically. $350 for nosebleed a few weeks ago to $50 now. 20 rows deep on the 35 is going for $170. They love their chiefs, but it’s going be absolutely brutal out Saturday night.

I know we read into these things too much sometimes, but AJ Brown deactivated his Twitter account, wiped his Instagram feed of all Eagles related content and did not participate in practice today. Philly is a mess right now.

There is a lot of speculation that Sirianni's future as HC is at stake and won't survive a loss.

At this point, I'm not so sure it'll survive a win.

Feels like Philly is exactly the kind of team that would absolutely thrive under Belichick. A team with tons of talent and Belichick with his resumé comes in and gets instant buy in from everyone.

They would need a new RT if that were the case.

Also, Howie Roseman would have to give up power, which he is never doing again after Chip Kelly.

I feel like managing all of these streaming subscriptions (music and TV) has become a full time job. Guess I have no interest in watching KC beat Miami 24-3 with half of the camera time devoted to Taylor Swift in her faux-fur jacket with mama Kelce.

Guys, just use NFLbite.com. Have an adblocker installed (I like uBlock Origin and AdBlocker Ultimate). It's not perfect, but it'll get you there. Buffstream's streams are pretty reliable.
